Just listening to 1984 Year-End Countdown, and Casey said Elton John explained in his song, why they call it the blues.
Still didn't hear the explanation! What is "that"? What did Casey hear that I have never heard?

What did Casey hear that I have never heard? I think that it's pretty much not being able to be with the one you love, as per the lyrics. Casey should have said something to that effect (which maybe he did, but if so, it was edited out before the final copy of the show was pressed).

I hear that unhappiness in the lyrics. But it doesn't explain why they call the music genre "the blues" (Casey's interpretation) or why they call the emotion "the blues". And if Elton or Bernie meant it in a circular way, that they call the emotion "the blues" because it is like the music genre, or if they call the music genre "the blues" because it is like the emotion, it's still unclear to me. Elton doesn't say what "it" or "that" are, and Casey just rubbed salt in the wound by saying he did.

I'm thinking it's the same "that" that Meat Loaf won't do for love.

I'm thinking it's the same "that" that Meat Loaf won't do for love. I wonder if Bobby Caldwell was singing to Meat Loaf.

Whatever “that “ is... don’t wish it away, yet, don’t look at it like it's forever... I guess what up I’m trying to say... between you and me... I can honestly say that things will only get better Maybe it’s just me... I’ve got time on my hands... I’ve been laughing like children, living like lovers... rolling like thunder under the covers... (not sure I can totally explain that one) To sum all this up... just stare into space... live for each second... without hesitation... maybe even cry in the night if it helps... Not sure if this has been helpful... if not... sorry ... it seems to be the hardest word for me at times... but that’s a whole nuther story...
