What year in the 1970s had first-time Top 40 hits by artists who would spend the most cumulative future weeks in the Top 40?
I thought of this when hearing Eagles and the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan all in early '73, with their first Top 40 hits all coming in 1972. And America was another from 1972.
So was it 1972?
Or maybe 1970, with Elton John and Diana Ross and Dawn and Anne Murray? Elton alone is a big one.
MJ was 1971 so maybe that year is a contender. McCartney too that year, but many or most of his future hits were Wings.

1979 has The Police, John Mellencamp, and Prince, which would probably beat out 1972 but not 1970 or 1971.

1975 saw the debuts of Queen, KC & The Sunshine Band, Electric Light Orchestra, Styx and The Captain & Tenille. Barry Manilow’s first top 40 hit peaked in 1975 so he could be included here.
I’m not sure if this would be the top year for debut artists in the 70s but most get a lot of airplay today on classic hits stations.

As I thought more about 1970 just from Casey’s first show alone we have the Carpenters and Bread and also there was Chicago that year. So I guess it has to be 1970.

1971 was the start of the amazing solo career of Rod Stewart, who hit #1 with his first big hit "Maggie May". He was already in Faces and remember that he was the feature vocalist in a minor hit by Python Lee Jackson in a song that came out 1972 called "In A Broken Dream". Alice Cooper also first hit the Top 40 that year with "I'm Eighteen".

1973 was the best year. Debuts from Queen (the best!!!), Aerosmith, Pink Floyd and ABBA.

1973 was the best year. Debuts from Queen (the best!!!), Aerosmith, Pink Floyd and ABBA. If we're talking first top 40 singles, as the original poster stipulated, then ABBA was '74, Queen and Aerosmith '75. If you're going by first American release, single or LP, then Queen and Aerosmith would indeed be '73. But ABBA would still be '74, while Pink Floyd's first LP was released in the U.S. way back in 1967.

I think 1974, a lot of #1 songs in that year!

1970,in my opinion, was the best year for new acts:Elton John,The Carpenters,James Taylor & Bread all made an impact on the pop charts.

There's several good choices, but anyone else that voted for 1970, I'm with you.

Don't forget about 1978 with Van Halen, The Cars, and Eddie Money.
