The version of "The Heart Of Rock & Roll" I heard mentioned Toronto and Montreal near the end.

Good question! For me, two stick out: the aforementioned "We Built This City", but also "I Wanna Be Rich" by Calloway. For my station, K92 (92.3) out of Roanoke, VA, the line "I spend my money on lottery. My favorite number is 1-2-3" was changed to "My favorite number is 9-2-3".

This thread reminds me of the Wayne's World ad for Uber Eats.

For the Fort Wayne, IN station I listened to at the time, the DJs there used the version of "We Built This City" where they could insert their own banter at the appropriate part. For another Indiana station I was listening to at the time (can't remember which one), they had a customized version of "I Wanna Be Rich", like the one woolebull mentioned above.

I was going to mention "Hot In the City" -- apparently Billy's record company had him record a different city name for the top 100 or so markets in the country (Slammin' Sam Meyers told the story on one of his countdowns in the past few years). So instead of "New York!", it would be the city for the market in which the song was played. For us at the time it was "Omaha!" ... even though we thought it was pretty cool back in the day, it didn't take too much to assume that Billy wouldn't have written that into the original song. Top 100 radio markets--wow! Gotta give Mr. Idol credit...he wasn't 'idle' at all in wanting to break through in the USA! He did more than the Top 100. They still play the version with "Sioux Falls" quite often on one of our local stations and Sioux Falls would have barely been in the Top 200 at that time.

Would that be longtime Classic AT40 affiliate KZOY 'Sunny Radio'?

LMFAO's "I'm In Miami Trick" had many different custom versions! I remember hearing "I'm In Canada Trick" back then.

Would that be longtime Classic AT40 affiliate KZOY 'Sunny Radio'? No, I have never heard the "Sioux Falls" version on KZOY. KZOY didn't start broadcasting until about 2010 or 2011. The station I was thinking of is KYBB which calls itself b102.7 Classic Rock. It has been in Sioux Falls since about the late 70s.

I vividly remember when The Pointer Sisters sang, "I'm riding in your car, you turn on KFRC" instead of "you turn on the radio" in their song "Fire".

I remember we had a customized version of "You and I" by Lady Gaga where they replaced Nebraska with Louisiana.
Then there was this country song called "Bonfire" that came out around the same time that mentioned "973" in place of one of the lyrics in reference to 97.3 The Dawg, but I can't really think of any other top 40 examples off the top of my head.

Does anyone remember any 'customized' versions of Sugarloaf's "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" in 1975? I've been wracking my brain (and it hurts!) trying to recall whether I ever heard any customization of that song other than the 'AM' and 'FM' versions. The 'FM version' said "...on Stereo 92", can't quite remember what the lyric was on the 'AM version'. That song would seem to be an obvious one for customization for specific radio stations.

I can only imagine what they came up with for that song...which was popular at the time I made my earthly debut. 😁

Thought that was really cool. Always loved the song!

I remember a version of "Heart of Rock & Roll" that featured "Hartford! New Haven!" at the end. I thought it was the local station being silly, but apparently this was done everywhere. Who knew?

Does YouTube have any customized versions of "Fire", "Hot in the City", "Heart of Rock 'n Roll", "We Built This City", and "I Wanna Be Rich" which we mentioned in this post?
