James Purify died January 22 from COVID-19 related complications. At age 76, he was living in his home town of Pensacola, Florida. Preceded in death by his cousin Robert Lee Dickey (d 2011), together they formed the R & B duo James & Bobby Purify. They would chart 8 Hot 100 hits, with 4 reaching the Top 40. Their first charting single "I'm Your Puppet" would be their only Top 10 hit, peaking at #6 late in 1966. Two personal favorites are "Let Love Come Between Us" (#23, 1967) and their cover of "Shake A Tail Feather", which would also chart in 1967, peaking at #25. Ray Charles would famously feature "Shake A Tail Feather" in the movie "Blues Brothers". Though their singles would stop charting after 1968, they carried on until Robert was sidelined with health issues in 1971. James continued solo until 1974 when he paired with Ben Moore who assumed the Bobby Purify moniker. They would perform as a duo into the 80s. Obituary

“I’m Your Puppet” by James & Bobby Purify was one of the tracks included on the 1971 album, AMERICAN TOP 40’s DOUBLE DOZEN OF HITS, VOL. 1. Corresponding with their song (inside the LP jacket), was this Casey Kasem story:
“A couple of cousins whose real names are James Lee Purify and Robert Lee Dickey. Both were born in Florida. I’M YOUR PUPPET was the first of eight chart songs they’ve had, and it hit #6 in 1966.”
