Kidney and heart disease has claimed the life of Jimmie Rodgers. He passed away January 18 at the age of 87. He had recently tested positive for Covid-19. Jimmie was drafted into the US Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in Nashville, Tennessee where he integrated himself into the local music scene. With the support of the local people, Jimmie was booked on "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Show". Upon performing, Roulette Records signed him to a contract. His first charting single "Honeycomb" would top the Hot 100 for 4 weeks in the late summer of 1957. For his career, Jimmie would reach the Hot 100 twenty-five times between 1957 and 1967. 14 of those singles peaked in the Top 40, with 5 making the Top 10. "Honeycomb" would be his lone #1 single. Jimmie hosted his own variety show in 1959, and acted in the movies "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come" and "Back Door To Hell". His life took a turn for the worse in December 1967. A mysterious assault on the San Diego Freeway left him with a fractured skull. He recovered after multiple brain surgeries, and would continue performing until spasmodic dysphonia took away his singing voice. He turned to songwriting and production work, as well as helping his daughter Michele and son Michael with their music careers. He was living near Palm Springs California at the time of his death. Another of the great 1950's recording artists who made it to the 2020's. R.I.P.

I enjoyed Rodgers' haunting 1967 message song "Child of Clay," which made the top 40 during the fall of 1967,. I vaguely recall hearing the tune as a six-year-old. I began to hear it often in a locally-produced oldies show beginning in 1989 or 1990.
