Cancer took the life of Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert on January 13 at the age of 76. Born John Voorhis Bogert III, Tim began his career playing piano and saxophone. His love of surf music was the impetus for Tim to switch to electric bass. He co-founded the Pigeons, but with the addition of drummer Carmen Appice, the band's focus evolved into hard rock/psychedelia prompting the name change to Vanilla Fudge. It was the nickname given to fellow member Mark Stein's cousin. In 1967, Vanilla Fudge's debut album generated their only Top 10 single. It was a cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On". The follow-up single "Take Me For A Little While" would sneak into the Top 40. During the 60s the band would release 5 studio albums, all charting in the Billboard 200. The band would split in 1970. Tim would join Cactus with Carmen Appice, and the band would release 4 albums in a 3 year span of the early 70s. Tim and Carmen's next project would be forming the supergroup Beck, Bogert & Appice, adding Jeff Beck. A studio album and live set recording would result from this union. Tim would work with Rick Derringer and Bob Weir through the years, and appear in various Vanilla Fudge and Cactus reunions. Both bands would release new recordings, Vanilla Fudge's "Out Through The In Door" in 2006, and Cactus's "Cactus V" in 2007. He retired from touring in 2010, but continued to do local studio work until his passing. Obituary
