How about the album version of Robbie Nevil's "Cest La Vie"? There's the fade out you notice in the 45 single version, but then after a few seconds of silence it continues back in for the finale you don't get in the 45 version.

I used to hear Prince's "Kiss" end immediately after he sings the title at the end of the last chorus, but there are a few seconds of guitar after that. Not sure if the version I used to hear was a single edit, or if that was how the radio station played it. On the album "Kiss" goes straight into another, similar-sounding song. I remember some stations stopped a few seconds into that other song. That song would be "Anotherloverholenyohead", which was the follow-up to "Mountains". The only time I remember that version being played on the radio was on "John Leader's Countdown USA", when he was counting down the Top 86 of 1986. I imagine that he probably played that version on his regular weekly show when "Kiss" was on the chart, but I listened to "Countdown America" with Dick Clark during that time. A song that I remember fading out and then fading back in was "I Can't Stand It" by Eric Clapton and his Band (or whatever the heck he was billed as on that song).

Probably one of the shortest songs for this category, but Evan & Jaron's "Crazy For This Girl" has two ending points. On the radio, I'd always hear it end after the first chorus that follows the bridge. In the video (and ostensibly the album version), there's then a piano break after that chorus, then one more chorus and then it truly ends.
I...think? I've heard AT40 use both versions. I've only heard four shows from what would be its run, but I think I've heard both the shorter and full endings there.

Here's a breakdown (chart run 9/9/2000 through 2/24/2001): Short: 9/9, 9/16, 9/23, 10/21, 12/23*, 1/27, 2/3, 2/17, 2/24, 12/29* Full: 9/30, 10/7, 10/14, 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, 11/25, 12/2, 12/9, 12/16, 1/6, 1/13, 1/20, 2/10 * - Year-end shows (2000 & 2001) No surprise the shorter version was used on the year-end shows; gotta fit 50 songs in a 4-hour show with network and local spots.

That would do it. The four that I've heard are 9/30, 12/2, 12/9, and 2/3.

"The Ooh Ooh Song" by Pat Benatar faked me out the first time I heard it. It sounds like it's ending around 3:28, and then Pat says, "Ah 1 2 3 4!" with the song continues for another 35 or 40 seconds. Link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Zv3x6lwG4

Flashlight by Parliament has what sounds like a cold ending then continues on for a few more seconds. I'm sure when that was new at least one DJ was fooled by that.

How about the album version of Jim Steinman's "Rock and Roll Dream Comes Through" in 1981, this version (not the 45 single version, I guess) ends after the music fades with the "The beat of its forever, that's when Rock 'n Roll Dreams Come Through" lines a couple of times sung in accapella.

I figured it out! "In Spring 1984 I remember Bill Baker on Danbury, CT's New Wave station WXCI complaining about a particular song 'ending' and then coming back to end again. I don't remember the act or the title, but the hook words of the chorus were "Everybody Knows."" It was Randy Fredrix's 1983 song "The Hunter." www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqPKa5H9r_MNow the world is at peace. Or, my world at least. =op

Even though the single of "Oh Father" has a distinct intro, you can still hear the end of "Dear Jessie" going into "Oh Father" on Madonna's greatest hits album, "Something To Remember," even though the song before it is "Rain."

Living Together , Growing Together by the 5th Dimension has another one of those false ending--with a note that seems to indicate the song is over at the 3:15 mark, and then the song goes on with some music fading out, for another 30 seconds or so.
