Spencer Davis has succumbed to pneumonia on October 19. He was 81. Although well known in the US for their two Top 10 hits "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm A Man", the band had previously topped the UK charts with "Keep On Running" and "Somebody Help Me". Their UK chart-toppers are great songs that suffered from lack of promotion in the US, peaking at #76 and #47 respectively. The band featured brothers Steve and Muff Winwood. Muff came up with naming the band, pointing out that Spencer was the only one who enjoyed doing interviews. He could handle the press, and they could stay in bed. Davis played guitar, harmonica and provided backing vocals to Steve Winwood's lead. Steve Winwood left to form Traffic in 1967 and the band broke up in 1969. Prior to The Spencer Davis Group, Spencer performed in bands with Christine Perfect, who would become Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. He also worked with Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman. In the mid-70s Spencer work as an executive for Island Records, promoting Bob Marley and Robert Palmer, as well as Steve Winwood's solo career. He has reformed the Spencer Davis Group several times (without the Winwood Brothers) for touring and recording purposes up to his death. He eventually took up residence on Catalina Island. Obituary
