Lionel Richie is considering a new version of "We Are the World" to raise money to fight COVID-19. The 70-year-old singer initially didn't want to mark the 35th anniversary of the track — which featured the likes of the late Michael Jackson and Kenny Rogers, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross and other singing superstars and raise US$63 million (S$92 mil) to fight famine in Africa — but thinks the message of the track is "so clear" in the current climate because of the global pandemic (see www.8days.sg/seeanddo/tvreviews/lionel-richie-wants-to-remake-we-are-the-world-again-12567492 for details).

It's a much, much better idea right now than Hands Across America 2020! But seriously, Lionel , please don't.

"We Are The World" is better off in 1985 than in this day and age. We had the 2010 version to raise money for Haiti, and that was an epic flop.

The question is if he did it would it be all current artists, all of the original artists who are still with us or a combination? As far as I know (and as most of you probably already know) Kenny Rogers was the 7th member of USA For Africa to pass away; the other 6 were Ray Charles, James Ingram, Michael Jackson, Al Jarreau, Waylon Jennings and June Pointer. Speaking of which, did Casey ever go through the list of all the artists who were on the record while it was on the charts? I would think he did but don't remember hearing it.

I'm pretty sure he went over the artists who sang solos, but I'm not sure about the others.

I'll have to listen to the shows; I, too, thought he mentioned them once.

Isn't anyone from the current gen of artists talented enough to come up with their own We Are The World?

Big Waylon fan here, thought I knew just about everything about him... thought to myself, “Waylon? We are the World? What?”... researched it and yep you’re right. Thanks for the info. :-)

I think it's doable for an updated version of "We Are The World".

Ironically enough the person who knocked WATW out of #1, Madonna, was one of the two most prominent artists who were NOT included (the other one was Prince, who either turned it down because or wasn't asked because Bob Geldof had called him something uncomplimentary.

Had not heard the Bob Geldof story before.

Speaking of prominent American artists of the '80's who were absent on "We Are The World", two more obvious examples are Tom Petty and John Mellencamp. Both were massively successful rock stars who were at the peak of their popularity. Why were they not included?

I also wish they could reboot these We Are The World-ish songs for the new normal/COVID-19 pandemic: "Tears are Not Enough" (Originally done by Northern Lights in 1985) "Do They Know It's Christmas" (Originally done by Band Aid in 1984) "Do Something Now" (Originally done by the Cause in 1985) "Stars" (Originally done by Hear-N-Aid in 1986) "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Originally done by the Crowd in 1985) "Let it Be" (Cover of a 1970 Beatles song originally done by The Sun Ferry Aid in 1986-1987) "Dear Mr. Jesus" (Originally done by Powersource in 1987-1988 - Though it never made the Top 40, Shadoe Stevens - then AT40 host - played a piece of it in a medley of songs mentioning Jesus to make the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990) "Voices That Care" (Originally done by Voices That Care in 1991) "What's Going On" (Cover of a 1971 Marvin Gaye song done by All Star Tribute in 2001) "We Are Family" (Cover of a 1979 Sister Sledge song done by the We Are Family Foundation in 2001) "What More Can I Give" (Originally done by Michael Jackson in 2001)

Had not heard the Bob Geldof story before. I hadn't either until I came across a story from 2015 in New York Magazine, oddly enough while doing research spurred on by this thread. www.vulture.com/2015/03/37-we-are-the-world-performers-ranked.htmlI also found this article from Rolling Stone that said that after declining to sing Prince offered to play guitar on the session and was angrily turned down by Quincy Jones. It also says that, against the suggestion of his manager, Prince went to a club after the AMA's that night and got some bad publicity. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/we-are-the-world-a-minute-by-minute-breakdown-54619/

Lionel Richies and Michael Jackson´s benefit anthem "We Are The World", interpreted by the all-star ensemble "USA for Africa" in 1985, is re-recorded by Austria´s ORF in times of the coronavirus crisis - in the interpretation of the Radio Symphony Orchestra and a Songcontest All-Stars Ensemble. At the initiative of ORF-TV´s cultural editors, the new version is currently being recorded in an arrangement by bassoonist Leonard Eröd - with around 50 Radio Symphony Orchestra members recording their tracks at home, with chief conductor Marin Alsop in Baltimore also contributing her mite. For the vocal parts the organisers have been able to win four Austrian Song Contest stars, who will follow in the footsteps of Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan or Diana Ross: last year´s representative Paenda, ESC third in 2018 Cesar Sampson, Song Contest candidate 2017 Nathan Trent and Vincent Bueno, who was actually seeded for this year, will sing "We Are The World". The song will be presented for the first time on 4/20/2020 within the framework of ZIB 1 and on "kulturMontag". The proceeds from the exploitation in the streaming sector are then to be used to benefit the Cultural Disaster Fund for Musicians of AKM (authors, composers and music publishers) and austro mechana.
