It begins Monday at 8am central time. I will countdown 100 songs on Monday, another 100 on Tuesday. Then Wednesday I will countdown 50 and then play the Fake AT40 show for 7-3-1980 where I pretend to sit in for Casey. Then on Thursday the final 50 songs. All the songs are being played from the original vinyl 45's and it's live not prerecorded. It combines the chart data from Billboard, Cashbox, Record World and Radio and Records. All four charts were published from the dates October 5th 1973 to April 10th 1982. That is the time period for the countdown. Hope everyone can tune in and share this please.

Here are the Fox Oldies Wednesday Live Flashback Top 50 Countdown shows scheduled for September. These shows start at 9am Eastern, 8am Central on thefoxoldies.com.

And something new this month starting with the 1972 show played on September 11th - instead of being based on Billboard only, the Top 50 ranking will be calculated using the rankings compiled by combining all the available charts from Cash Box, Radio & Records, Record World, and Billboard.

Thank you mitchm for this reminder. I Think that the change of chart methodology will be effective next wednesday with the show from 1967 , the last show using only Billboard was the one from 1989 played this past wednesday - if i'm not wrong.

Sam said himself that next week's Flashback would be the last one based on Billboard alone.

Sam must use the Radio & Records chart of the week before since R&R charts were a week ahead of the others. Rick Dees and Casey Kasem were doing that for their shows using R&R charts of the week before.
Let's take Sept 26, 1987 :
Nb 40 on R&R was Bruce Springsteen's Brilliant Disguise and not charted on Bilbboard & Cashbox Top 100 just because this song entered the Cashbox Top 100 at #38 and Billboard Hot 100 at #40 the week after of Oct 3, 1987.
Whitney Houston was #3 on R&R on Sep 26 but was # 1 the week before ( as for two other chart on Sep 26 ).
For that reason , the chart offered by the Fox 50 Countdown is not right in my opinion .
Of course i love the show and the good idea of melting all charts but it should be on correct and equitable basis.

Hey Doofus67, are you going to do a Fantasy One-Hit Wonders countdown for the years between 1975-1986?

Hey Doofus67, are you going to do a Fantasy One-Hit Wonders countdown for the years between 1975-1986? That's a great idea. The individual weekly charts are still a work in progress. Once they're done, I can whip together a OHW list.

Skyseth I appreciate your opinion as everybody has one. Rather than posting how wrong it is. Did you think that maybe me or jalcomic had no idea that R & R was on a different calendar. We just use the chart date that is on the magazine. Might have considered doing it the way you suggested had we known. All we are trying to do is entertain people musically.

Sam (and all you other chart watchers)--
as noted earlier the date in Radio & Records would correspond with the dates in Billboard, Cash Box and Record World--a full 8 days (a week--sorry couldn't resist) later.
In other words a chart date of September 1 in R & R would match up with the September 9 in Billboard, etc.
However, as Sam notes just enjoy the music on the show and don't get so hung up on where songs are on the chart. I know I've had people tell me that (especially in connection with year end countdowns)--I get comments like that song at #22 couldn't have been a bigger hit than the one at #51 (just one example). My suggestion is don't get so hung up on where a song ranks on a year end chart, just enjoy the music
Now on a weekly chart that could be a different matter--but again it all depends on how a certain magazine collected the data for their chart and usually anything outside the Top 10 (as has been discussed before) is really almost a crap shoot until the Soundscan and BDS era began in 1991. However, one thing I have noticed is that most songs charted within a margin of error (about 3-5 positions) in the Big 3 and the big difference with R & R was it was an airplay only chart; which resulted in certain songs peaking in dramatically different positions (especially starting in the 1980's).

Starting next Monday (10/14), the Fox Oldies will be holding the World Series of Pop Music 2019. It will start at 1pm Eastern time, 12pm Central. The format is that 32 of the biggest music artists are entered in a single-elimination tournament. The artists are mainly from the 70s and 80s with a few of the 60s biggest artists thrown in. For example, in the first round it will be Olivia Newton-John vs. Barry Manilow. Three songs will be played for each of the artists and then the voting starts. Voting will be done by email. Each round will last 30 minutes and each round will eliminate one artist. The last round, round #31, will take place on Friday, 10/25. The rounds will be played about 3 per day, Monday through Friday, for the 2 weeks, so most days it will be about a 90 minute session to eliminate 3 artists. This is just a fun way to get an idea of which artists are the fan favorites. You can't vote early if you have a conflict some day. The brackets are up at TheFoxOldies.com listed under World Series of Pop Music 2019.
