On this week's 1975 show Grand Funk sounded horrible. So did the following story about Glen Campbell. But once Rhinestone Cowboy itself started, other than being butchered, it sounded as clean and crisp as if it were recorded yesterday.

In the version available on demand from WPAC I don't hear a problem with this part.

Maybe some stations still have an original vinyl transfer copy of the show? I have a remastered copy and that part sounds very good, as does the whole show.

Listening to 9/25/1982 on the Classic AT40 channel: Pops and cracks during The One You Love (#32) and well as come cracks during the story that's on after (though some of it might be from saliva rather than the record). I rarely come here, the easiest place for discussions and follow up is on the three Facebook groups. There's one for the 80's, one for the 70's and the History of American Top 40 1970-1988. Several former staff participate and moderate those forums. Coming back to the comment on 9/25/82; the current version in Premiere's files was a vinyl transfer from July of 2009. This show is yet to be taken from the master tapes but is on my radar.

Heard some pops early in the 1/27/1979 show, which I'm currently listening to. Got cleaned-up copies of the 1/20 and 2/3 shows. But a lot of the show copies from vinyl transfers I have still sound good - no complaints here. January 27, 1979 was transferred from the master tapes in June 2015. What aired is from the vinyl transfer years earlier. I have many upgrades in my archives where the vinyl transfer has been replaced by the master tapes transfer but I was instructed to not sent the updated masters. Thus, those truly from the master tapes will primarily only exist in my library.

I can hear some record pops during Leader of the Band on the 2/20/1982 show. Can confirm that 2/20/82 is an early 2000's vinyl transfer. Show remains to be taken from master tapes.

The 3/3/79 show, airing on SiriusXM this weekend, had audible record pops as well. Show is my library is from master tapes, transfer March 2015.

The Entertainer was about the worst I have heard from start to finish. I think I heard background snaps, crackles, and pops in that and "Sunshine On My Shoulders". And I was listening over TuneIn, not over the air where standard radio static might have been an issue. Even if Premiere's copy of this show was less than perfectly remastered for whatever reason, I've heard worse sounding shows from this period. A couple of spring 1974 shows aired by Sirius XM had such poor and muffled sound that Casey sounded almost like he was broadcasting from under water. In my personal opinion, something was different in the studio in 1974. Those shows, as you pointed out, have a distinctly sound difference. Same brand of tape was used and all but I agree, those sound muffled/flat and have a lot of artifacts. Songs like The Entertainer, Sunshine On My Shoulder and The Way We Were had tremendously noise vinyl and it was compounded by compression techniques used by the staff in 1974. Not an easy digital track drop due to the type of dynamics and compression used.

The Way We Were sounded awfully noisy on this week's 1974 show.

This week's 1976 segment that included Elt's 'Bullet seemed to have a lot of noise.

I wonder if it was just poor source material this week. I listened to Ken's supersized version and the noise was replaced with hiss, pretty much throughout the show. And the right ear was louder than the left. Sounded like crud. Disappointing considering last week's flawless 1978 offering.

On last week's 1974 show, Redbone sounded badly warped and High On A Feeling sounded slightly warped.

There are several spring/summer 1980 shows on which, when Casey is intro-ing "The Rose", before the music starts, there is a weird noise that sounds a cross between applause and a vacuum cleaner.
