Are there any songs that had something embarrassing about them, so much that you had to turn the volume down until the song (or at least the embarrassing part) was over?
An example of this might be the "Be quiet, big boys don't cry" part of "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc. I actually rather liked that part, but know a few people who don't.
An example for me, even though this wasn't an AT40 hit (due to not being released as a single) would be "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder - the crying baby part at the beginning (which is indeed heard on the Stars On 45 Stevie Wonder tribute), as well as the baby babbling at the end (on the extended version of the song).
What are some of your "embarrassing" songs?

This has more to do with the sounds in the song but "Jungle Fever" by Chakachas. It is embarrassing to have that song come on if you are a teenager or kid listening in 1972 in front of parents or any older person with the moaning sounds.

One could add both "Pillow Talk" (in this week's '73 show) and "Love To Love You Baby" to the 'orgasmic' list, which "Jungle Fever" certainly tops. "I'll have what she's having..."

The first song I thought of was "Telephone Man" by Meri Wilson. Her voice is cringe-worthy whether she's singing her lines or the telephone man's part. The only saving grace about this song is that it's only 1 minute and 57 seconds long!

"Playground In My Mind" by Clint Holmes. My mother used to sing the "My name is Michael..." part to me when I was little, long before I knew it was ever part of a pop hit. Now...well, I have a ready made break to use the bathroom or get something from the kitchen around #7 in this weekend's 1973 AT40.

Donny Osmond's early solo hits - an embarrassment on multiple levels - to the artist, the label, the stations, the buyers. the listeners. His hits with his brothers and sister were much, much better.
Bobby Sherman's hits - not quite as bad but then what were?
Many people found/find the original MacArthur Park embarrassing but it may be my favorite record ever. So there we are.

No surprise that Clint Holmes' run was done after that one...still can't figure out how the song did so well.

I love SCTV but I hate what they did to that song. Same for the cowbell and SNL. I love Don't Fear The Reaper but I can't unsee that, or Dave Thomas. I wish they had picked on songs I don't like so much.

The 90's had it's fair share of bad ones, but after about thinking about it for a few minutes, there is one in particular that should not be sung aloud in public. It's the 1997 hit "Barbie Girl" by Aqua.

What about during the Shadoe Stevens AT40 era the rap "Me So Honry", "The Humpty Dance", "Tic-Tac-Toe", "O.P.P.", "Mind Playing Tricks On Me", and "Baby Got Back" - were these embarrasing to radio stations that cue sheets showed how to skip these songs if they were on the AT40 chart despite AT40 playing only the first verse and end chorus for these on some if not all?
I don't know if Barry White's 1977 song "It's Esctacy When You Lay Down To Me" was embarrasing since only a minute and 30 seconds was played almost each week when it was on AT40.

I remember listening to AT40 in the car with my aunt and insisting she turn the radio off when the 2 Live Crew song came on, then not knowing how to answer when she asked why.

Just listening to the 6/25/88 show, and J.J. Fad's "Supersonic" has to fit the embarrassing bill. I recall that J.J. Fad were being hyped as the first big female rap act, but man that song was painful to listen to. Funny thing--the hype was somewhat misguided, as Salt'n'Pepa beat them to the punch with "Push It" hitting the top 40 almost 6 months earlier (and was a significantly better song than "Supersonic").
Michael Bolton had some embarrassing moments too--not the least of which was his remake of "Dock of the Bay"...still my vote for the worst remake ever.
Tiffany's remake of "I Saw Him Standing There" has to get some consideration, or at least the video does. That's the one where she did that thing with her hands making a square around her face, a move she likely regrets to this day.

Other embarassments: anything by Milli Vanilli. Enough said.
"Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice is so cheesy/cliched that it could almost pass for a comedy record. Ironically, that may have helped resurrect it in recent years; especially since 90s nostalgia became a thing, it's gotten a lot of recurrent play on radio and elsewhere. A song/artist that was briefly everywhere and then soon unceremoniously dumped now seems to have taken on a campy popularity.

Interestingly enough about the "big boys don't cry" line in "I'm Not In Love"--Godley and Creme actually reprised that in their 1985 hit "Cry". It's not my favorite part of either song, but there has been worse...
