I was wondering what is the least number of debut songs on an AT40 show? The reason I ask the question, I recorded a show in which no songs debuted in the Top 40 on the Cash Box charts (May 14, 1977)--and I am wondering if it ever happened during the classic AT 40 time frame (1970-1988). Thanks, Joe Cash Box Countdown

It happened a few times in the Shadoe era, but there was always at least one debut each week in the original Casey era.

But all the "classic" Casey AT40s had at least one new entry.

What are the weeks with only 1 debut? I can think of one off of the top of my head ....
September 20, 1980
51 (31) Hey, There, Lonely Girl • ROBERT JOHN 40 (44) Sartorial Eloquence (Don'tcha Wanna Play This Game) • ELTON JOHN
Were there others before November 1991, or, even after?

8/28/76 and 10/19/85 are two others. There are more...

The one countdown I know of in the original Billboard AT40 era that had zero debuts was 4/17/93--and that's correct that there were no zero-debut weeks during Casey's AT40 run from 1970-88.
That being said, here are all of your 1-debut weeks during the 1970s and 80s--there were six of them including the aforementioned 9/20/80 countdown:
8/28/76 - "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine (ironically, this song debuted at #40 and only spent one week in the top 40 before dropping out the following week, and was Red Sovine's only top 40 hit--a trifecta of sorts that I'm not sure ever happened before or after) 5/20/78 - "Tumbling Dice" by Linda Ronstadt 9/20/80 - "Sartorial Eloquence" by Elton John 10/19/85 - "Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister (the only song on this list that hit #1) 1/9/88 - "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure (also debuted at #40 and dropped out the following week--though unlike Red Sovine, the Cure weren't done hitting the top 40) 10/7/89 - "(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me" by Paula Abdul
As for the 60's or the 90's and beyond, someone else will have to chime in.

On 6/27/92, "Good Stuff" by the B-52's debuted at #33. Shadoe even mentioned the fact that it was the only debut, as well as how many times that had happened in AT40 history. I think he said it was eight times, meaning there would have to be another AT40 show between October, 1989 and then with only one debut. But it may have been the seventh time; I'm not completely sure.

1/12/1991 - guest hosted by Nelson - had only 1 debut - "Love Makes Things Happen" by Pebbles and Babyface at #40. 12/21/1991 had 1 re-entry at #37 of "Forever My Lady" by Jodeci.

Had it not been for skipping a week in early 94, 1/15/94 would have as well. (1/8 used the January 1 chart; the January 8 chart was skipped entirely as 1/15 used its week's chart) And to add another "1 re-entry" week, Shadoe's last show was one of those weeks.

Let me just say 'thank you' to all of you who responded--I knew I could expect a lively discussion of this rare chart feat.
After I recorded the Cash Box Countdown for 5-14-1977, I knew I was curious whether AT40 had dealt with this unusual situation; and knew I could count on this board to answer the question.
Best Wishes to all,
Joe

Did Shadoe acknowledge the fact that there were no debuts at any point in the two shows mentioned?
I know that I've mentioned this in another thread, but I forget which one, but on the CT40 where there were no debuts, at the beginning of the show, when Casey usually mentioned the number of debuts and the artists involved, he just said that there was lots of chart action that week with big moves from several artists, and then he'd read off the artists who had the biggest moves of that week. As the AC chart moved slower and slower, there were often zero debuts on CT20/CT10, so he eventually dropped the big move line from his script (soon after the show on which two songs tied for the biggest mover - each moving up a mere two spots) and just went right to where he read off the previous week's Top Three.

And these Shadoe Stevens AT40 Mainstream chart format episodes had for 1 debut or 1 re-entry weeks: * 1/16/1993 - 1 re-entry: "Rump Shaker" by Wreckx-N-Effect * 12/25/1993 - 1 debut: "Choose" by Color Me Badd * 7/16/1994 (The first week Shadoe Stevens AT40 was no longer heard on radio stations in the USA but continued internationally for 6 more months) - 1 debut: "Selling the Drama" by Live * 8/6/1994 - 1 debut - "Fantastic Voyage" by Coolio * 11/5/1994 - 1 debut (at #34, of course!) - "Lucas with the Lid Off" by Lucas
