Any word on when AMC 1976 might happen? I listen in to the station when I can, but often can't listen for more than a few minutes at a time at work.

Nothing official on AMC 1976 yet, just that it's almost done and Sam is working on it when he can. Hopefully sometime in March. He typically gives at least a week's notice of its start date. Something will get posted here when the official start time is announced.
In the meantime, Sam has been live announcing AMC 1964 every Wednesday morning between 9am and 1pm EST. It isn't as detailed as his pre-produced shows, but he is playing every song that reached the top 40. After 4 weeks he is now in 10/1964. This coming Wednesday, 03/07, he will probably complete calendar year 1964 and play some extras for 1964 that didn't make the top 40, including several Beatles album cuts. The following Wednesday, 03/14, it will almost certainly start on AMC 1965.

^The live AMC is on Mondays, not Wednesdays. Wednesdays is the live Top 50 countdown. I believe Sam said next week's chart is March 6, 1976.

I don't think AMC 1976 has progressed much in the last 5 weeks. Sam has been busy on other projects and AMC 1976 is definitely on the back burner. I doubt it will be broadcast in the next month or two.
But in the meantime (and this is one of the projects that is delaying AMC 1976) Sam has continued to play a live version of each song that made the top 40 of Billboard. Yesterday he finished the show by playing songs that debuted into the Top 40 for the week of 11/20/65. He does this every Monday morning starting at 9am Eastern and 8am Central and going for 4 hours. He typically progresses about 3 months per week. Next Monday he will finish songs from 1965 that hit the Top 40 and then play a few hours of extras from 1965 that still get some airplay today. Then it will be on to 1966 songs, probably starting April 15th.

Is he still playing songs that just missed the Top 40 during the 1980s (like he did when he was playing old AT40 shows), or did that fall by the wayside as well?

In the AMC 60s shows that he has been doing live on Mondays, he plays 2 or 3 hours of non-Top 40 extras at the conclusion of each year. It has been taking 4 or 5 weeks to get through a year. He is going year by year and will get into the 70s roughly in September. In the Wednesday countdowns he's also been doing live, Sam has been doing the entire Top 50 for the date he picks (which so far have been between 1968 and 1992) and throws in an extra roughly once an hour (3 or 4 per countdown) that is on the same countdown but didn't hit the Top 50, usually songs that peaked that week, and sometimes album cuts that received quite a bit of radio airplay.

Sam mentioned a week or two ago that he hasn't been able to devote any time to this project for months now. On the AMC live broadcast that is on the Fox every Monday morning, songs that debuted in the Top 40 in November of 1966 are pretty much all played now. This coming Monday (May 13th), the first hour or so of the show will be playing the songs that debuted in the T40 for 12/1966. My guess is the rest of this show will be mostly extras that missed the Top 40, beginning with songs that peaked at #41 during all of 1966. He will then continue, in descending rank order, playing other well known songs from 1966 until reaching #100. If time permits, songs that were popular album cuts will then be played. Songs that entered the Top 40 in January of 1967 will be played next, probably starting sometime on May 20th.

That is definitely a possibility. I am thinking if it does take that long before 1976 is completed, Sam will figure out a way to get 1976 finished up since I believe he is well over half done. The main difference between the live versions he is now doing on Mondays and the studio versions he previously did for 1977-1983 is that in the studio versions he has many added features, such as interviews with artists, the top movies and TV shows at the time (trailers), etc. It just makes sense to do 1976 as a studio version considering all the time already invested in it. But he may well get through 1975 via the live route before 1976 is aired. At the current pace, the airing of 1975 live is probably 12 to 15 months off.

mitchm, thank you for the updates; much appreciated. I haven't been able to devote much time to it with my work and all my commitments that keep me away from listening. I wasn't even around much to listen to the AMCs from 1977-1983 when they aired, but I was able to record them all and then listen later.

I've been trying to do an update once a "year", about the time just before the extras are played for a year. A lot of the things I note are just my take of what's going on, not necessarily "The Fox Oldies" opinions.

Sam is finally getting some work done on AMC 1976. He has also been receiving some help from some of his listeners. Hopefully there will be an announcement with a specific time for AMC 1976 within 30 days.

This coming Monday, July 8th, songs that made the Billboard Top 40 in December of 1967 should finish being played in the first hour of the show (starts at 9am Eastern, 8am Central). The remaining 3 hours of the show will probably be mostly devoted to extras, songs from 1967 that did not ever hit the top 40 but still received a lot of airplay in 1967. A few songs from early 1968 may be played this coming week in the final hour, or they will for sure be played the following week (July 15th).

Next Monday, August 12th, the final songs that debuted in the Billboard Top 40 in 12/1968 will play, followed by extras from 1968 that did not make the Top 40. Several album cuts will also be played. This will probably take up all 4 hours next week, with songs that debuted in the Top 40 in January of 1969 starting the following Monday, August 19th.
And no, it doesn't seem like AMC 1976 is any closer to airing than it was last month. I am still thinking it is less than 2 months away, but I am not as confident about that as I was last month.

1969 AMC Live is almost done - it will finish up this coming Monday (09/23). Extras for 1969 (songs that didn't peak in the Top 40 of Billboard, plus favorite album cuts) will get started this coming Monday and will finish up the following Monday (09/30), and Top 40 songs from early 1970 will also get started that day.
Sam has also been working on the studio version of 1976. He thinks there is a good chance it will air in either late October or early November.
