I was listening to the American Top 40 show from November 22, 1975 yesterday, and Casey did an extra on the song, "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" by Otis Redding, and Casey mentioned that Otis Redding and Janis Joplin are the only performers who never had a No. 1 hit while they were alive but did hit No.1 after they died. Casey mentioned this chart stat again on AT40 from March 26, 1988. Other than the Beatles having the Top 5 songs on the Hot 100 in April, 1964, and Chubby Checker hitting No. 1 with "The Twist" twice on 2 separate chart runs, the Deceased No. 1 stat is the most impressive stat in chart history.

How many artists have only hit the top 40 posthumously? There was Selena in 1995/96. By the way giannirubino, another two hit wonder. Also, Notorious BIG with "Mo Money, Mo Problems". Spoke too soon: From an R and R standpoint, Selena would have two hits. From Billboard, just "Dreaming Of You".

I thought of another one: Lil Peep in 2019 with, "I've Been Waiting".

Most recently Juice WRLD. Good catch. I wasn't sure if "Lucid Dreams" hit before he passed away.

It was before. "Lucid Dreams" was a hit in 2018, Juice WRLD passed in December 2019.

I don't recall Pop Smoke hitting the top 40 before he died, but he did chart afterwards, most notably "What You Know Bout Love".
