Mr AT40 , Silence is Golden is not an incident but more of a reference to a 1953 recording made by two CBS Recording Engineer- Hamilton O' Hara and Don Foster called "Three Minutes of Silence", which literally gives us what the title promised, 3 minutes of pure silence in a record groove. An oddity of the fifties.
Hope that answers your question.

I think what Mr AT40 is referring to is the item on the "AT40 timeline" for 9/21/91. I asked Rob awhile back what that was about since I have that show on CD and didn't remember what happened. It seems a drop-piece of a song called "Silence Is Golden" was played before Chesney Hawkes' hit "the One and Only" because the "Silence" song was a hit by a group that included Chesney's mother (I think it was his mother.) But the drop piece played was either the wrong song or a really bad copy of it or something like that, I can't remember the details exactly. But apparently, the AT40 staff found the correct piece in plenty of time to change it for broadcast but the ABC executive in charge said no, just go with it how it is, and left in the bad piece. Rob used it as yet another example of ABC management cutting costs and not caring about the quality of AT40 during the Shadoe years. later, Jeffster

Thanks Alfred and thanks Jeffster for your replies. I was indeed referring to the incident reference on the AT40 Timeline. Jeffster you answered my question. Thanks. ;D

As for the segment in question: The clip of "Silence Is Golden" is the right song. And actually, it sounds like a pretty smooth segue from the #30 song, "Real, Real, Real" into the music for the clip of "Silence Is Golden". However, it does seem that the whole first segment of hour 2 sounds scratchy and choppy. I am not sure if it is my copy, or if it is ABC being sloppy. To me, it sounds like a CD with scratches on it. So, it could totally be my fault or maybe it was internally just a really bad segment. Does anyone else have a copy of this show that can verify it? Again, first segment of hour 2 from AT 40 9/21/91.

I just wonder what became of 'MrAT40' and 'Jeffster'? Two names I don't think I've seen on here until this 18-year-old thread was resurrected. ...and apparently neither of them was familiar with the 1967 #11 hit "Silence Is Golden' by the Tremeloes. Wonder if they'd recognize the group's #13 "Here Comes My Baby", from earlier that same year? Possibly the better-known of the two.

It must be your copy; mine sounds good. Love "The One And Only"; seems to be a long-lost hit. I remember re-discovering it in the fall of 2008 after the song was used in a hockey goal-scoring compilation that someone had put together.

I was familiar with him before this board. Always appreciated his contributions through the years. As for MrAT40, he might be the ultimate "one thread wonder" on here...three posts, all in this one particular thread! As far as the Tremeloes...two great songs you mentioned. Sounds like a candidate for a solid two hit wonder ranking!

I remember re-discovering it in the fall of 2008 after the song was used in a hockey goal-scoring compilation that someone had put together. Yeah, I think it was my computer. I went back and it sounded crystal clear. Every once in a while, reading old posts, I find ones particular to songs that I truly love. "One And Only" for me is certainly one of those songs. And I think part of that was because AT "overkilled" interviews with Chesney while the song was making its way to the top 10. Particularly in 1991, it felt like they would interview someone once, and use segments from the one interview throughout the song's chart run. For me, I would role my eyes every week as Shadoe would promote what sounded like a new interview with an artist when it was just a segment from the same interview for weeks. The wild thing is that it made me pay attention to the particular song. "One and Only" not only fits that bill for me, it helped me to not only love the song, but to appreciate who Hawkes was.

Shadoe AT40 used a K-Tel re-recording of the Tremloes' "Silence is Golden", perhaps? Just like Premiere might have used a K-Tel re-recording of "Let Me Be Your Angel" by Stacy Lattisaw and maybe remixed re-recordings of "Pop Musik" by M and "Y.M.C.A." by the Village People.

If they're like any K-Tel versions of songs I've heard, I seriously doubt it (especially the 'Pop Musik' and 'YMCA' remixes that Premiere used).

I don't think it was a different version. It sounded great, to be honest.

As far as the Tremeloes...two great songs you mentioned. Sounds like a candidate for a solid two hit wonder ranking! They did have a third, also in 1967: "Even the Bad Times Are Good", #36 that fall. A fourth U.S. single in early '68, "Suddenly You Love Me", was a 'near miss', peaking at 44.

Thanks for that!
