Here is a slightly different spin, lyrics mentioning another act in the countdown. For example on this week's 1981 show Afternoon Delights mention Dr. Noah Drake who was just a few spots above them with I've Done Everything For You. Was this an XM show? Yes, the Big 40 featured 1981 this past weekend.

Pre AT 40 but I Dig Rock and Roll Music mentions Donovan, Beatles and Mamas & Papas, who were coincidentally I believe all in the top 40 as well when Peter Paul and Mary debuted 9/2/67.

On the 12/6/86 top 40, Daryl was in with his Foolish Pride. A few spots below it Nancy Martinez as singing 'you got your foolish pride'

On the 1/25/75 show Mac Davis' sounds just like Paul on his #16 Rock and Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life). Well right next to him at #17 was Paul at Junior's Farm!

I was just thinking about this thread recently when I came up with another one...
Whitesnake's "Is This Love" opens with the words "Should've known better..." and charted alongside a certain Richard Marx hit.

For several weeks in 1979, there was Earth Wind & Fire's "After The Love Has Gone" ("how could you lead me on") and Maxine Nightingale's "Lead Me On".

Summer of '75. The Amazing Rhythm Aces must have been big fans of the Hudson Brothers, as they repeatedly mentioned the song Rendezvous.

Summer of '75. The Amazing Rhythm Aces must have been big fans of the Hudson Brothers, as they repeatedly mentioned the song Rendezvous. Might this be the least commonly used word to be a title appearing in the lyrics of another song in the same Top 40?

More from 1988. While Sade was charting with Paradise, Steve Winwood was singing, "It's just a step up to paradise" in Roll With It.

On this week's Commentary Casey show, Contours wanna 'Do the Twist' and right below it was The Twist by Fat Boys ft. CC I always thought it was cool that one of the biggest songs to have a second chart run "Do You Love Me" had the title of the biggest song ever to have a second chart run. and both songs were referencing the same thing!

On Casey Kasem's American Top 40 from March 5th, 1977 at #38 "Do Ya" by Electric Light Orchestra has lyrics "save you for a rainy day" then in the same segment at #36 is "Save It for a Rainy Day" by Stephen Bishop!

On February 25, 1984 (perhaps one of my top favorite shows), Thompson Twins debuted at #39 with "Hold Me Now" which contained the lyric "so I sing you a new song". And lo and behold, "New Song" by Howard Jones debuted at #38.
