My annual tradition... selecting My Top 20/25 from the Top 100 of (insert year here)...
My Most Favorite 20 songs from the Top 80 of 1970... listed in order as they were featured on the show: Bottom half of the Top 80: The Letter, It's A Shame, Run Through The Jungle, No Time, Evil Ways, Love Or Let Me Be Lonely, 25 Or 6 To 4, Make Me Smile, Lola, The Rapper Top half of the Top 80: Second half of show: Venus, Signed Sealed Delivered, Green Eyed Lady, Spirit In The Sky, O-O-H Child, Spill The Wine, Thank You (Fallettinme Be Mice Elf Again), Mama Told Me (Not To Come), American Woman, (They Long To Be) Close To You
My Most Favorite 20 songs from the Top 100 of 1980 are forthcoming... Bottom half of the Top 100: Tusk, Misunderstanding, Off The Wall, Don't Let Go, Sara, Hurt So Bad, Him, Fire Lake, I Can't Tell You Why Top half of the Top 100: Take Your Time (Do It Right), With You I'm Born Again, Heartache Tonight, Cars, The Rose, All Out Of Love, Woman In Love, Funkytown, Coming Up, Pop Muzik, Upside Down
I had a difficult time trimming my absolute faves from 1970 down to 20. Meanwhile, I had a somewhat difficult time coming up with a Top 20 from 1980 when I normally have difficulty trimming down a list to get to a Top 25 from an 8-hour show... go figure.

It had a limited release as a single in December of that year and the working title was "Daddy Don´t Get Drunk on Christmas Day". The Spanish-language version "Felicidad" was released in 1980 in Spanish-speaking territories. The lyrics reflect on the passing of time, and the need to hope for a better future with every new year. It emphasizes the importance of having dreams and the strength to pursue them, as well as the need to find common ground with one's neighbours. In the end, it urges us to never give up on our hopes and dreams, even when faced with difficult times.
from my musical category "daydreamer" My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

My Top 26 songs from the 1/5/74 countdown with 9 absolute faves in bold: Top 10: Time In A Bottle, The Joker, Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress), The Most Beautiful Girl, Show & Tell, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Never Never Gonna Give You Up, Living For The City, I've Got To Use My Imagination #11-20: Top Of The World, Hello It's Me, The Way We Were, You're Sixteen, Love's Theme, Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do), Me & Baby Brother #21-30: If You're Ready (Come Go With Me), Just You 'n' Me, Mind Games, D'Yer Maker, Spiders & Snakes #31-40: Photograph, Space Race, Jungle Boogie, I've Got A Name, American Tune
This week's #10 songs are This Week's Pick Hits. Barry Gibb's production on "Heartbreaker" obviously elevates Dionne's tune, but it's a great mid-tempo AC/Top 40 tune. Meanwhile, I love the percussion on "I've Got To Use My Imagination". Enjoy...

Hey chrislc ... what is it about the songs from this show that you don't care for? Overplayed today? Not your type of pop music? Just curious. There are a few periods where AT40 music may be a little lean for me (like early '73 shows) but I would never say that nothing from a particular show moved me... but if it's the overplayed factor, I get it.

Nothing from 01/22/1983 moves me now. I still don't get Down Under or Africa, but hey it's only been 40 years. Give it time. It's funny how these perceptions change. I have always looked at late 1982 into early 1983 as a very refreshing time for Top 40 and AC. It seemed then that we were pulling out of a slump that had gone on in 81 and 82 with the Second British Invasion perhaps being the biggest reason for that. But as I looked at this Top 40, there just weren't any songs that gave me that "wow I really still like that song" or "I've changed my mind compared to back then and I really like it now (the Carpenters for example)" feeling. Some songs I just burned out on. From 74 I would have said for at least twenty years that Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was not only one of my favorites from that week but one of my favorites from any week ever. But I'm just burned out on it right now. Maybe I'm just sick of hearing him on iHeart and those promos during their AT40s that never get updated. I'm not burned out on early 83 so much as just not feeling it right now.

Just when I think I've heard everything "Put it in a Magazine" by Sonny Charles pops up at #40 this week. Had to listen to it a couple more times to really absorb this piece of orchestral early '80s soul. I really like it.
Apart from that some favorites from the '83 show: Twilight Zone- Golden Earring. This was like nothing I had heard before back when I was 12. Just has that ominous sound to it. Stray Cat Strut- Stray Cats. I can't help myself with this one. I gotta belt it when it comes out. My kids love it. But not really. Heartbreaker- Dionne Warwick. You can tell it's a Gibb tune through and through. Always loved Dionne's voice. I think this one's great. She doesn't care for it according to wiki.

1/22/83:A Flock Of Seagulls - Space Age Love Song Barry Manilow - MemoryFleetwood Mac - Love In Store Sonny Charles - Put It In A Magazine The J. Geils Band - I Do The VoiceThe unmistakable sound of Ernst " The Voice" Grissemann´s voice is familiar to a large part of the Austrian, especially older generations of radio listeners and television viewers. Grissemann was first heard on the radio in July 1954. At that time, he was working as a news and program announcer at the French occupation station "Sendergruppe West". Then in 1955, after the Austrian State Treaty was signed, he was taken over by the ORF. There he was active in many areas, especially for radio: as an announcer, presenter, commentator, entertainer and designer. In 1967, he was brought to Vienna by ORF General Director Gerd Bacher, who entrusted him with the development of entertainment radio in the reformed ORF. In just a few weeks, Grissemann and his team built up the radio station Ö3 and were extremely successful. His 12 years at the station earned him the title of " Mister Ö3". From 1979 to 1990, Ernst Grissemann was appointed radio director of the ORF several times. In this function, he now also shaped the cultural radio station Ö1 with his voice and the design of commentaries and moderations in his very narrative style. "If the word ORF veteran applies to someone in particular, then to Ernst Grissemann. He was a presenter, commentator, entertainer and designer, laid the foundation for the success of Ö3, and as radio director and Tyrolean provincial director in other important management functions made a significant contribution to what distinguishes ORF today," said ORF Director General Roland Weißmann: "Our condolences go out to his family." According to ORF Radio Director Ingrid Thurnher, Grissemann was "one of those personalities who was always approached with a mixture of respect and honest admiration." Grissemann´s achievements for ORF radio were incomparable, Thurnher said: "The ORF radio family loses one of the greatest and mourns." And here is an " Ö3 Powerplay"-edition that is still in use today: 1/22/83:Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me Daryl Hall & John Oates - Maneater Men At Work - Down Under Phil Collins - You Can´t Hurry Love Toto - Africa Time for an extra: Bert Kaempfert & his OrchestraErnst Grissemann had a 30-minute music program on Wednesday mornings ("Music for you and me") on Ö3 in the early 1980s. 1/23/88:Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Can´t Stay Away From YouNew Order - True Faith Squeeze - 853-5937 Steve Winwood - Valerie A new record plantAustria´s only record production facility has opened a new location in Fehring in eastern Styria due to the boom in demand in recent years: " Austro Vinyl Werk 2" will produce up to one million records per year from January 2023 and will also welcome guests in its "glass factory" from the spring. Around 3.5 million euros have been invested in the new plant. It all started in 2017, when hobby DJ Peter Wendler noticed that records were often only available six months after the release of new music albums. Wendler teamed up with Johann Fauster and Johann Koller, and the three of them founded Austro Vinyl in Fehring. In addition to production, the factory will also house a coffee house, bar and club. Artists who have their records pressed at Austro Vinyl will be able to perform. In addition, guided tours will be offered from March 2023. Travel companies have already inquired about this, the executives said. "We will be the only glass record production facility in Europe in March," the trio is convinced of the demand. Austro Vinyl´s sales in 2021 have broken through the one million euro mark, according to the company's own figures. In 2022, he said, a close doubling of sales is possible, and with the new capacity possibilities, sales should increase significantly once again, because the market for records is growing. According to Fauster, 70 to 80 percent of music is currently streamed in Austria, while the rest is sold physically - about eight to ten percent on record - and the trend is rising. The records produced will also be available for purchase by guests. Four listening stations, much in the style of real record stores, will be available to visitors. And here´s a " #1"-edition: 1/23/88:George Michael - Father FigureINXS - Need You Tonight Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel Tiffany - Could´ve BeenWhitney Houston - So Emotional Time for an extra: Dave Clark Five"Callow-la-vita" is a song by the British band Raymond Froggatt released as their debut single in April 1968. It wasn´t successful in the UK, but became very successful in the Netherlands. Dave Clark first heard "Callow-la-vita" on the radio and several weeks later contacted the publishers asking if they expected anything to become of the song, to which they said no. He then said that he would to cover the song so long as he could change the title, some of the lyrics and have a different arrangement. The publishers agreed and the Dave Clark Five recorded the song as "The Red Balloon". Recorded at Lansdowne Studios, the band was joined by trumpet session musicians, and the brass and saxophone arrangements were done by Les Reed. The lead vocals were by Dave Clark, which was the only Dave Clark Five single to do so. They were intended to be by usual lead singer Mike Smith, but "he couldn´t get to grips with it". The song also includes a verse in French, which had to be written down phonetically as Clark didn´t speak the language and he later said "I didn´t know what the hell I was singing about until Top Of The Pops put a translation on screen". After the single´s release, Raymond Froggatt´s original version was re-released with the title "The Red Balloon". By the way: A well known Louis Clark, later a member of the Electric Light Orchestra, originally came from the band Raymond Froggatt. And just like "The Red Balloon", parts of the lyrics of ELO´s "Hold On Tight" are sung in French. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
