Just for fun... because it's Black History Month, I looked at the diversity within my absolute favorite picks. The good news: seven of my 12 absolute faves from the '79 show are from artists or groups who are predominantly Black. The bad news: all nine of my absolute faves from the '83 show not only are all White artists or groups but all White guys. OOPS! I blame MTV . Here's the Disco Purrfection version of "Every One's A Winner" along with the album-length version of "Twilight Zone". Two songs clocking in at 16 minutes and 50 seconds... : BONUS: It's not often an '83 countdown has fewer favorites by my count. The 2/3/79 countdown is really, really good!

2/5/83:A Flock Of Seagulls - Space Age Love Song Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie Patti Austin & James Ingram - Baby, Come To MeRay Parker Junior - Bad Boy The Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut A nightly visit
It must have been a short trip before Mother´s Happiness. A pregnant sow escaped a few days ago at night from a farmer in Groß Gerungs (Lower Austria) and was wandering around the village. On her night walk, the animal came to a bank branch. "The sow did one or two rounds in the foyer and then left the branch again", said branch director Walter Weiss. The animal was discovered by a passer-by around 4 am who informed the farmer. He was able to catch his pig again a short time later and bring it back to the stable. And there came a big surprise: the pig gave birth to several healthy piglets shortly afterwards. "For us it is a lucky pig", said Weiss, "may it bring us all good luck." There was no damage to property or person, even for the adventurous sow the excursion ended unscathed. And here´s a " rock"-edition for all those who want to experience a lot of adventures at night: 2/5/83:Golden Earring - Twilight Zone Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) Saga - On The Loose Sammy Hagar - Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy The Clash - Rock The Casbah Time for an extra: Glenn MillerThe record company didn´t seem to trust the song much at first: it was only released on the B-side of a single. But "Chattanooga Choo Choo" with Glenn Miller and his orchestra received the first official Golden Record in history – almost exactly 80 years ago, on 2/10/1942. "Chattanooga Choo Choo" was a homage to a train that really existed. However, the route was also slightly longer than the 800 miles from New York to Chattanooga in southern Tennessee. The real train was called the "Birmingham Special" and ran from 1932 to Birmingham, Alabama via Chattanooga, a major railway junction at the time. That was about 150 miles further. Writer Mack Gordon and composer Harry Warren had written the beautiful piece during a train ride in that "Birmingham Special". Poetry freedom led to the song not being named after the real train – because it would not have been possible to find such a cool melody. Moreover, the word Birmingham would not have resulted in an alliteration to the sonic "Choo Choo." The "Choo Choo" and the composer´s sound ideas also suggested the decision to use a steam locomotive – although electric locomotives are said to have been operating on this route in 1941. And the songwriters took another liberty: they let the train run on platform 29, even though the station in question, Pennsylvania Station, did not have any platform 29. But for the rhyme you needed the word "twenty-nine." And the lyrics worked. On 5/7/1941, Glenn Miller finally recorded the piece with his orchestra and with the brilliantly used, very virtuoso voices of vocal soloist Tex Beneke and the vocal group The Modernaires, and by September it was already in the top ten, later even #1. By the way, the A-side was taken from a movie and played a leading role there: "I Know Why (And So Do You)" - this song was also written by the same team of writers and from the same movie as "Chattanooga Choo Choo": "Sun Valley Serenade" But the A-side never became as popular as the big band train ride to Chattanooga.
from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.

Valentine´s Day traditions
Same as all Valentine´s Day celebration traditions in other developed countries, Austria also enjoys the same way of celebrating Valentine. Like many other countries, the people of Austria also celebrate this day by sending greeting cards, gift baskets and flower bouquets to their family friends and most importantly to the love of their life. One of the must and common trend of Valentine´s Day celebration in Austria include gifting red flowers to your partner. Since the ancient times, roses have been considered as a token of love and so it becomes customary to include red roses during the celebration of Valentine´s Day. People gift each other with beautiful and lovely red flowers in Austria on Valentine´s Day. Most of the Valentine´s Flowers bouquet is made of red roses and red tulips that people exchange with their lovers in Austria. Chocolates and candies are also the attraction of Valentine´s celebration in Austria. Women of Austria give candies and chocolates to their love on Valentine´s Day. Most people here prefer making candies and chocolate at home than buying from stores. Besides that, in Austria on various places musical concert takes place on Valentine´s Day. Most restaurants offer romantic dinner along with some romantic music playing in the background. They make special arrangements for Valentine´s Day celebration and are decorated to create that atmosphere of love with heart shaped balloons and bright lights and the food menu on this day include exotic and delicious items. In addition to that, youngsters also send romantic emails, messages, E-cards and Valentine´s Day SMS.
And here are my "Valentine´s Day"-editions 2022:
2/13/82 (A):
Alabama - Love In The First Degree Del Shannon - Sea Of Love Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You Kenny Rogers - Through The Years Sheena Easton - You Could Have Been With Me
2/6/88 (B):
Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere Richard Marx - Endless Summer Nights Roger - I Want To Be Your Man Sting - Be Still My Beating Heart Tiffany - Could´ve Been
Time for an extra: Paper Lace
There were at least a few young men in England that didn´t have all the facts straight, and in the 1970s their pop group from Nottingham turned their "romantic misunderstanding of American history" into a historically dubious yet gloriously catchy hit record. Though it was never intended for the American market, Paper Lace´s "The Night Chicago Died" crossed the Atlantic and became #1 in 1974. "The Night Chicago Died" was a story-song chronicling a deadly 1930s gun battle between Chicago cops and Al Capone´s foot soldiers on the "East Side of Chicago" — a battle that never happened on a side of Chicago. But if "The Night Chicago Died" failed to go through a rigorous fact-check process prior to its release, it was certainly understandable. Just weeks before their sole international hit "Billy Don´t Be A Hero" topped the Billboard pop chart and Paper Lace had watched another potential hit stolen from them by an American group called "Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods". Songwriter Mitch Murray later acknowledged, however, that Bo Donaldson´s "theft" of what could have been Paper Lace´s #1 hit may have helped them eventually to get there. As he later told Billboard magazine, "People took notice of us because we were beaten to the post. It made more of a story for DJs to talk about."
Here are Paper Lace with "The Night Chicago Died":

2/15/86:
Charlie Sexton - Beats So Lonely Heart - These DreamsMr. Mister - Kyrie Simple Minds - Sanctify Yourself The Hooters - Day By Day ClockyThe Graz Clock Tower is a popular landmark of the city of Graz, the second largest city in Austria. But if you take a closer look at the dial, you will notice that, unlike other clocks, the large hand counts the hours and the the small hand counts the minutes. In order to clarify this, a short history lesson is needed. Records show that there was a tower on the site as early as the 13th century – the landmark of Graz has existed for more than 700 years. After the 24-hour counting finally gained importance in the late Middle Ages, the tower received a clockwork in 1569. At first, however, without a minute hand. But why was there a large hour hand in the first place ? On the one hand, movements were anything but accurate at that time and a minute hand would often not have given the correct time. An hour hand was therefore entirely sufficient and to make it as visible as possible, a large hand was used, which is easily recognizable on the three dials with a diameter of around five metres. In 1712 a pendulum clock was installed in the tower, which worked much more accurately than the system previously used – at that time the minute hand was probably also installed. It was decided to make the minute hand smaller, which seemed quite practical at the time. If you had made the minute hand larger than the hour hand, it would have stood far beyond the dial. Changing the mechanism for switching hands would also have cost a lot of money and so it was decided to keep the large hand as an hour hand and to add a small minute hand to the display. Even in 1945 – when the clock´s impulses became electric, the switched hands were retained. No matter what time it is, the following " greatest hits"-edition should be a source of joy at any time of the day: 2/15/86:Aretha Franklin- Another Night Dire Straits - Walk Of Life James Brown - Living In America Sade - The Sweetest TabooSheila E - A Love Bizarre Time for an extra: Randy NewmanRandy Newman, born 1943 in Los Angeles, comes from a dynasty of musicians. His father, a doctor, occasionally played clarinet in Benny Goodman´s big band. His uncles Alfred, Emil and Lionel Newman were successful film composers in Hollywood. Randy began his career as a contract writer. He released his debut album in 1968. In his song "Short People" from 1977, he describes small people rather uncharmingly – not only do they have small hands and small eyes, but they also have ugly little feet, and the only big thing about small people are the big lies they tell. In short, little people have no reason to live. They took the lyrics and thus also the cynicism literally and wanted to see behind it a discrimination against people with small body height. A gross misunderstanding ! Because Randy Newman was actually about the ruthless disclosure of prejudices in the society he criticizes. "Short People" is a bizarrely oversigned song about the arbitrariness of exclusion, a satirically disguised call for more respect for small people. Randy Newman does not make fun of the underprivileged of this society, but in his own way motivates people to look and question. Thanks to Randy Newman, we land in Dayton, Ohio this week. From 1972, here´s Randy Newman with "Dayton, Ohio – 1903": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits.
