The X-Alps
The X-Alps is the world´s toughest adventure race. Founded in 2003, it´s a race across the Alps by foot and paraglider that only the most skilled and strongest athletes are able to take on. It involves speed hiking, ultra running, mountaineering and flying, and requires not only incredible endurance but elite paragliding skills and mental strength. The race takes place every two years. Over 12 days around 30 athletes attempt to cross more than 1,000 km of complicated alpine terrain via a fixed set of Turnpoints. In the course of a day it isn´t uncommon for athletes to hike over 50 km and as much as 5,000 m of vertical ascent. On top of that they cover huge distances in the air, often in treacherous mountain conditions few would dare to fly. Uniquely, the X-Alps is a race where men and women compete equally. Ultimately athletes are not just competing against each other, but against themselves and an even greater foe – the alpine weather. Every edition of the X-Alps features a different route over the Alps that crosses remote mountain chains and valleys and passes famous resorts and peaks. Traditionally the race began in Salzburg and finished in Monaco. However, for the 10th edition of the race in 2021, organisers updated the format to create an out-and-back route. This sees athletes battle their way from Salzburg to Mt Blanc and back to Zell am See via 12 Turnpoints in five countries. At 1,238 km it´s the longest route in the race´s history. Some Turnpoints encompass a wide area and can be passed in the air while others are on the ground, requiring athletes to land and sign a board. These become focal points for fans to watch the action. The athletes can only fly during daylight hours between 6 am and 9 pm. Overnight, a mandatory rest period is in place and athletes cannot move from their location. However, each athlete is equipped with a Night Pass, which allows them to break the curfew once. This can help to gain a strategic advantage, but it comes at the cost of exhaustion. From day four and every 48 hours thereafter, the athlete in last place is eliminated. Three days before the race a one-day Prologue takes place in the resort of Wagrain Kleinarl, 60 km south of Salzburg. It´s a 30 km hike-and-fly battle via three Turnpoints which awards the three fastest athletes an additional Night Pass.
So, here are my "race"-editons for this week:
6/20/81 (A):

Time for an extra: Lio
Lio was born as Vanda Maria Ribeiro Furtado Tavares de Vasconcelos 6/17/1962 in Mangualde, Portugal. When her father was called up to fight in the Portuguese Army, the family moved to Mozambique. Her parents divorced and, in 1968, Vanda moved with her mother and new stepfather to Brussels, Belgium, where her sister, actress Helena Noguerra, was born. In her teens she was determined to become a singer, and she was encouraged by singer-songwriter Jacques Duvall, a family friend. She took her stage name, Lio, from a character in the Barbarella comic books by Jean-Claude Forest. In 1979, together with songwriter Jay Alanski, she and Duvall began working with Marc Moulin and Dan Lacksman from the electro-trio Telex. "Amoureux solitaires", a song originally by the punk rock band "Stinky Toys" hit #1 in 1981.

This time a little bit longer, because ... 6/23/84:(news, weather, traffic and signation) Nik Kershaw - Wouldn´t It Be Good (#99) Tina Turner - What´s Love Got To Do With It (debut) Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) (favorit) Van Stephenson - Modern Day Delilah (favorit) Ollie & Jerry - Breakin´ ... There´s No Stopping Us (biggest mover) (commercial break and intro) Jefferson Starship - No Way Out (#28 due to 6/28) Huey Lewis & The News - The Heart Of Rock´n Roll (#6 due to 6/28) Whistling Jack Smith - I Was Kaiser Bill´s Batman (instrumental background for weather- and traffic-update) Tony Carey - The First Day Of Summer (#53) Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face (favorit) Rod Stewart - Infatuation (favorit) Slade - Run, Runaway (favorit) Deniece Williams - Let´s Hear It For The Boy (#3) (commercial break and intro) Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time (#2) Duran Duran - The Reflex (#1) The Alan Parsons Project - Lucifer (bumper music) The saxophone and June 28thThe Belgian Adolphe Sax had learned to be an instrument maker from a young age in his father´s workshop. This was followed by music studies at the Brussels Conservatory. But it soon became clear that his passion lay less in playing with tones than in the construction of sound. Sax was a tinkerer, a hobbyist: horns, tubas, bassoons and clarinets. He tried almost anything that produced sound through a column of air. After initial successes in his home country, Adolphe Sax left Belgium and went to Paris with little money - but great ambitions. And not wrongly. The Parisian composers and musicians of the time had heard of the talented Belgian and welcomed him warmly. At that time a copy of his new instrument, the saxophone, must have existed, which he then brought to Paris. Because in 1842 a close friend of Sax, the composer Hector Berlioz, wrote in his newspaper column about the invention: "Its sound is of a nature that I have not seen in any deep, common instrument. It is full, soft, swaying, enormous Strength and suitable to be weakened. In the upper area it brings sounds of urgency that make it well suited for melodic expressions." In 1845, Sax played in front of the royal family to recommend the inclusion of his instruments in the French military orchestras. Thereupon a public competition was held on the Marsfeld in Paris between a traditionally manned military band and one with sax instruments. The competition was in Sax´s favor. On June 28th, 1846, he also received the French patent for an entire family of saxophone instruments. In his declaration on patent application No. 3226, he justified his invention with the lack of good sounding woodwind instruments in the lower register. The existing instruments for outdoor music and military bands were too quiet. And that´s why there is also a " celebration"-edition at this point: 6/23/84:Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark Irene Cara - Breakdance The Cars - Magic The Pointer Sisters - Jump (For My Love) Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days
Austria and Italy
Some won the game, others won the hearts of the fans and earned international respect. Austria lost the round of 16 against Italy at London´s Wembley Stadium 1:2 after extra time and said goodbye to EURO 2020 with a great performance. It was an "Arrivederci" with decency.
Captain Alaba almost struggled for words: "We can be incredibly proud, Austria can do that too. We tried everything, but we weren´t rewarded. It hurts a lot." The great joy of the Italians, they sank to their knees cheering, spoke for the strong performance of the Austrians, who at the end stood with drooping heads and shoulders on the lawn, disappointed and exhausted. They had fought to the end for the miracle of Wembley, they were so close, they had given everything, but the reward remained. But not the applause of the Austrian fans living in England, who were torn from their seats. And thus to a " sporty"-edition:
6/23/84:
Chicago - Stay The Night Culture Club - It´s A Miracle Joe Jackson - You Can Get What You Want Kenny Loggins - I´m Free (Heaven Helps The Man) Rick Springfield - Don´t Walk Away
Finally, a "best friends"-edition must not be missing this time:
6/23/84: Dan Hartman - I Can Dream About You Lionel Richie - Hello Michael Jackson - Farewell My Summer Love Steve Perry - Oh, Sherrie Van Halen - I´ll Wait
Time for an Italian extra: Raf(f)
The song "Self Control" was first published in 1983 by the Italian singer and songwriter Raf (civil: Raffaele Riefoli, in German-speaking countries he was known under the name Raff, Raf reminded the record company too much of a political group of the 70s). His version was a ballad with slight disco influences. Therefore, Laura Branigan´s version is a cover - which hardly anyone knew at the time of publication. Paradoxically, Raf even faced allegations of plagiarism - a misunderstanding that Laura Branigan was quick to resolve. In the video, the night is embodied by a man in a mask who appears and disappears from time to time. That plot was "too hot" for MTV and they didn´t play the video. And in June / July 1984 there was a "Self Control" double pack at the top of the German charts - Laura Branigan at #1 and Raf(f) at #2 with "Self Control":

A "Formula 1 paperchase"
Take a Dutchman, a Mexican, a French, a Japanese, two of the most extraordinary six-wheeled off-road vehicles in the world, send four Formula 1 drivers, who normally travel at over 300 km/h on the Grand Prix circuits of the world Fight for championship points in Styrian terrain - and the perfect preparation for the double Grand Prix on the Austrian asphalt of the Red Bull Ring is ready. The "Formula 1 paperchase" started for Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez, Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda at Hangar-7 in Salzburg. The journey took the pilots with a Cessna 208 Caravan seaplane to the "Styrian Sea", the Grundlsee, around 80 kilometers away. The drivers were prepared for their tasks by Red Bull motorsport consultants Helmut Marko and Tanja Bauer. In proper style in lederhosen, they fought a first race with two traditional Platten boats typical for the region in order to get the keys for the Pinzgauer in the respective colors of their racing stables. Pinzgauer, originally made in Graz, are extremely off-road vehicles that can easily take on extremely difficult terrain and extreme climbs. On their route through the Styrian forests to the Red Bull Ring, Max Verstappen & Co. made full use of the off-road power of the red-white-red off-road machines on six wheels. After numerous challenging tasks, finally arriving in Austria´s Formula 1 stronghold at Spielberg, the drivers naturally fought a hot duel with a thrilling sprint to the finish on the Red Bull Ring. "To be honest, I´ve never seen anything like a Pinzgauer - a car with six wheels. I think it was used by the Austrian Armed Forces. It was really cool to drive it", said Verstappen. “It´s always nice to race in Austria. It´s perfect that there are two GPs at the Red Bull Ring again. It´s our home race and we´ve already won here twice. I´m looking forward to two great weekends." "The paperchase was challenging and we took it very seriously", laughed Sergio Pérez. "So far, it has been the absolutely best Red Bull preparation you can have for a race weekend." "We got to know the Austrian landscape and discovered many different parts of the country before we arrived at the Red Bull Ring. I really enjoyed doing something with all the drivers", said Pierre Gasly. And Formula 1 rookie Tsunoda added: "It was a really interesting and exciting experience with a lot of teamwork. During the off-road trips with the Pinzgauer we got stuck a few times and it was hard to get out of there. But it was a lot of fun."
And here´s my "sports"-edition for this week:
7/4/87:
Bob Seeger - Shakedown Bryan Adams - Hearts On Fire Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Rhythm Is Gonna Get You Pseudo Echo - Funkytown Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)
Time for an Italian extra: Spagna
Spagna (actually Ivana Spagna) is an Italian pop singer and songwriter. With around 10 million albums sold worldwide, she is one of the most successful artists in her country. Spagna began her career in the mid-1980s with English-language pop songs. With her debut single "Easy Lady" in 1986 she achieved European success. A year later she landed her biggest hit to date with "Call Me". In Great Britain "Call Me" climbed to #2 - to date the highest ranking ever achieved by an Italian singer. Her debut album "Dedicated To The Moon", released in the same year, sold 500,000 copies worldwide. After releasing a dance rock album and a minor hit in the UK called "Every Girl And Boy", Spagna moved to the Sony Music record company, moved to the US and settled in Santa Monica. There she produced her 3rd album "No Way Out", with which she turned back to disco-pop. After releasing a greatest hits album, she returned to Europe in 1993. In the same year she recorded the critically acclaimed "Matter Of Time" album. She had her last European hit in 1995 with "Lady Madonna". From then on, Ivana Spagna only recorded new songs in her mother language. In 1996 she took part in the Festival di Sanremo for the first time. With the title "Gente come noi" she reached #3. Five very successful albums in Italian followed in the next few years. She last appeared on Italian television in February 2006 as part of the Sanremo Festival and in May 2006 on the reality show "Music Farm".
From 1987 here´s Spagna with "Call Me":

My Top 24 songs from the 7/15/72 countdown:Top 10: Lean On Me, Too Late To Turn Back Now, Outa-Space, Song Sung Blue, Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), Rocket Man, Alone Again (Naturally), Where Is The Love#11-20: School's Out, Take It Easy, Layla, The Candy Man, Troglodyte (Cave Man), Conquistador, I Need You#21-30: Nice To Be With You, Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress), People Make The World Go Round, I'm Still In Love With You #31-40: Last Night (I Didn't Get To Sleep At All), Hold Your Head Up, Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You), Oh Girl, I'll Take You There This time around, I would add "Amazing Grace" to my list making it a Top 25, and would make " People Make The World Go Round" an absolute fave... so it gets my pick hit this week. My Top 36 songs from the 7/16/83 countdown:Top 10: All of 'em! Every Breath You Take, Electric Avenue, Flashdance... What A Feeling, Never Gonna Let You Go, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Come Dancing, Too Shy, Our House, Is There Something I Should Know, Time (Clock Of The Heart) #11-20: Stand Back, I'm Still Standing, 1999, She Works Hard For The Money, Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), Baby Jane, Don't Let It End, Maniac, Cuts Like A Knife #21-30: Hot Girls In Love, Family Man, She's A Beauty, (Keep Feeling) Fascination, It's A Mistake, Wishing (I Had A Photograph Of You), Saved By Zero, Rock Of Ages #31-40: China Girl, Beat It, Affair Of The Heart, I'll Tumble For You, Roll Me Away, Always Something There To Remind Me, The Border, The Salt In My Tears, Lawyers In LoveThe only four songs not making the cut this week? "All This Love" by DeBarge: Good tune overall and I like the harmonies... but it just misses the favorites list. "Rock & Roll Is King" by ELO: Solid tune but it sounds a little manufactured (most ELO tunes sound bright and original). Having said that, the song has a cool video. "Take Me To Heart" by Quarterflash: Lead singer Rindy Ross sounds whiny here, both her voice and her sax. OK overall. "Stop! In The Name Of Love": The only song on this week's countdown where I would change the channel. This was an unnecessary remake, and for some reason, radio stations really pushed this song when it first came out. Still, 39 out of 40 songs are good, very good or excellent this week. The Stylistics and Hall & Oates are my Pick Hits this week. Russell Thompkins Jr.'s voice makes PMTWGR an incredible tune. And this one has really grown on me thanks to airplay on SiriusXM's Soul Town. Meanwhile, Hall & Oates crafted a way cool pop/rock tune with FM. This Detroit dude can enjoy some Philly soul any time of day... and I hope you like long versions of songs 'cuz I'm posting them here :
