2/20/88:Boy George - Live My Life Def Leppard - Hysteria Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Can´t Stay Away From YouSting - Be Still My Beating Heart Swing Out Sister - Twilight World Five times GoldThe 2021 World Ski Championships in Cortina d´Ampezzo, Italy, went down in history as one of the most successful for Austria. Austria wins the medal table with five gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals. For Austria it is the 6th most successful World Cup in history - #1 is Chamonix 1962 with 6 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 5 bronze medals. So, here´s my " five times Gold"-edition: 2/20/88:Expose - Seasons Change George Michael - Father FigureINXS - Need You Tonight Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel Tiffany - Could´ve BeenTime for an extra: Spider Murphy GangFirst, the solution of the arithmetic trick from last week: If one denotes the shoe size with x and the year of birth with y the following calculation results: (5*x + 50)*20 + 1021 - y = 100*x + 1000 + 1021 - y = 100*x + 2021 - y The shoe size x is therefore multiplied by 100 (= 5*20), whereby the two digits move to the first two places of the four-digit number. The multiplication 50*20 and the addition 1021 result in the current year 2021. If you subtract the year of birth, the result is the age. Digits or numbers are also used for telephone numbers, for example in a song by the Bavarian band " Spider Murphy Gang". The " Spider Murphy Gang" is a band from Munich that became famous for rock´n´roll music with lyrics in Bavarian dialect. The band name was created after the fictional gangster " Spider Murphy" from Elvis Presley´s song "Jailhouse Rock". In 1981 the band achieved a #1-song on the music charts in German-speaking countries with "Skandal im Sperrbezirk" ("Scandal in the restricted area"). "Skandal im Sperrbezirk" arose in the context of the redesign of the Munich restricted area. A stricter restricted area ordinance had already been issued on the occasion of the 1972 Summer Olympics. "Skandal im Sperrbezirk" is about a fictional Munich prostitute named Rosi, who takes the suitors away from prostitutes outside the restricted area. The phone number "32 16 8" used in the lyrics of the song allegedly existed and belonged to an elderly lady who received dubious calls after the song appeared. Singer Günther Sigl, on the other hand, said in an interview: "32 16 8 was suddenly the most famous telephone number in Germany. In Munich we checked the number, it didn´t exist back then. In other cities, it was. Some young people had fun there and called. Well, we paid for a few phone number changes and sent numerous bouquets of flowers across Germany as an excuse." To date, this number has not been assigned in Munich. A little later the song "Wo bist Du ?" ("Where Are You ?"), a song on the subject of "dating agency", appeared. The lyrics introduce a young, educated woman and a successful, modern man who can be found in the "Club of Lonely Hearts". Thus, the single society, which was more often discussed in the media at the time, is taken up. Here´s that fast rock´n´roll song with some punk e-guitar cues. From the album "Tutti Frutti" here´s the " Spider Murphy Gang" with "Wo bist Du ?" ("Where Are You ?") - and you should pay special attention to the musical beginning and the musical end of the song: from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

2/26/83 (B):ABC - Poison Arrow Lionel Richie - You AreNight Ranger - Don´t Tell Me You Love Me Supertramp - My Kind Of Lady The Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut Starmania 21It took twelve years, now the " Starmania" brand is back on the screens: The ORF casting show is again looking for the best singing talents in Austria. First of all, 16 promising singers face the strict judgment of the jury in each of the four opening episodes. Eight of them each make it to the two semi-final shows, where it says again: 16 make 8. The remaining 16 candidates then go to the first final show, in which the jury is still the only one to have their say and again eight lucky ones elects. Only with episode 8 does the audience come into play. The eight most convincing talents up to then compete against each other in four pairs of two, the climbers are determined by televoting. The jury can award two "jury tickets" for advancement among the losers. In Show 9, the six remaining singers will battle it out for four final tickets, three of which will be awarded by the audience and one by the jury. And after the grand finale, which provides for no less than three public votes, it is then clear who won the new edition of " Starmania" and thus followed in the footsteps of Michael Tschuggnall (2003), Verena Pötzl (2004), Nadine Beiler ( 2007) and Oliver Wimmer (2009).
And here are my "star"-editions for this week:

The band " Trio" had published their phone number on the cover of their first album " Trio". The late Stefan Behrens remembered: "The telephone line was glowing. We only had one phone in the shared apartment, in the basement, and it was now always busy. Everyone wanted to know whether the band ' Trio' really answered this phone number. So we had to get together split up and did three shifts on the phone. We took turns sitting in the basement and appeasing excited callers: 'What ? No ! Really ? Am I connected to Trio now ? I´ve been trying to get through for days, but it´s always busy.' That went on for weeks. We then set up a separate telephone for everyone very quickly so that we could make private calls again." Matching the band name " Trio" here are three songs (each in the English version) - "Da Da Da I Don´t Love You You Don´t Love Me Aha Aha Aha", "Boom Boom" and "Tooralooralooraloo - Is It Old & Is It New"- the last song was recorded on Christmas Eve 1982 in the Paramount Studios in Hollywood, where Bing Crosby also sang "White Christmas": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Happy birthday - The (!) mouse becomes 50
Generations grew up with it: On 3/7/1971, the first episode of "Sendung mit der Maus" ("The program with the mouse") was broadcast. Between children´s programs that have become umpteen times louder and faster, she is just as enthusiastic as it was 50 years ago. Knowledge broadcasts in children´s programs are booming today more than ever - the mouse laid the foundation for this as a knowledge mediator from the very beginning with a simple but effective formula. How do the strips get into the toothpaste and the holes into the cheese ? How are Lego bricks made and how are chewing gum ? With the "Sachgeschichten" (Factual Stories), "Sendung mit der Maus" was the first children´s program in German-speaking countries to convey science. And in the "Lachgeschichten" (Laughing Stories) numerous characters who later got their own programs and even movies had their first appearances - "The Little Polar Bear" and "Shaun the Sheep", for example. In short spots between "Factual Stories" and "Laughing Stories" - "Tack, tack !" - the orange mouse tumbles into the picture today as it did then and jingles - "Clack, clack !" - with its big eyes. The figure was designed in 1970 by the illustrator Isolde Schmitt-Menzel. The blue elephant has belonged to the mouse since 1975, and the yellow duck completed the trio in 1987. The name "Laughing And Fatural Stories", as the program was appropriately called at the beginning, says the essentials about the success of "Sendung mit der Maus", says Petra Herczeg, communication scientist at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the University of Vienna: "Elements of entertainment and elements of information are well linked". The viewers would get the feeling that they are being informed and entertained without it becoming infantile - "because children don´t like that," Herczeg said in an interview. The mouse does not appeal to the children, but makes them an offer: colorful, qualitative variety - "an offer that is not outrageous, but honest and authentic. Children feel that they are being taken seriously.".
The fact that the "Sendung mit der Maus" has changed is particularly clear from the "Factual Stories". Their topics are completely different today than 50 years ago, just as the world is completely different. While the first episode showed how sthingys and forks are made, today we will explain, for example, how data is stored in the cloud. The manufacture of countless products has been described in the "factual stories" over the decades - from bread rolls to passive houses. There were also focal points on topics such as nuclear power, child poverty and "Does getting old hurt ?". The "Factual Stories" are commented on improvised by the distinctive, friendly voice of Armin Maiwald, one of the inventors of the "Sendung mit der Maus" and producer of numerous "Factual Stories". The 81-year-old also started out as a "mouse" presenter in front of the camera. The difference between programs from the past and today is mainly "in the speed and in the topics", Maiwald once said in an interview. "The viewing habits have changed, we had to adjust to that. But one thing has stayed the same: We are still researching journalistically very conscientiously." The team worked on the "factual history" of what vitamin C does in the body for about three years. "The children´s thirst for knowledge is still great. We still get a lot of mail. Good children´s television must be done just as well as that for adult viewers," Maiwald is convinced: "It has to take the children with it and fascinate them."
This is also the aim of the many knowledge programs that are now available in children´s programs around the world, and which do not always succeed. "Knowledge broadcasts are important for children because their natural curiosity is satisfied - through topics that are presented differently than in school or by parents," says communication scientist Herczeg. "You have a kind of learning room with moderators who, for example, do experiments on behalf of the children. They are sympathetic figures with whom the children can identify. "The added value is that you can learn something in the process. Basically, it´s always about fun - "Children want to have fun" - and excitement - "Children love good stories".
In its early days, the "Sendung mit der Maus" program had to take a lot of criticism: it was cut too quickly by educators. And the church naturally found the broadcast slot on Sunday morning not conducive. But the mouse stayed - and it remained true to itself. With the "Tack, tack !" of its steps, which incidentally is generated by knocking on a coconut in the recording studio, and the "Clack, clack !" of its eyes, which comes from castanets. Sounds strange, but that´s how it is.
And that´s why I not only have the best congratulations on the birthday, but also a "celebration"-edition - in a double pack: 3/13/82 (A):Huey Lewis & The News - Do You Believe In Love Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock´n Roll The Go Go´s - We Got The Beat The J. In 1978 he got a record deal with Ariola and his first hit, Lucky, reached number 6 on the Austrian charts in 1978. Bernie Paul is also very successful as a songwriter and producer. From 1981 and early 1982 here´s Bernie Paul with "Night After Night":

My Top 14 songs from the 3/17/73 countdown: Top 10: Killing Me Softly With His Song, Love Train, Could It Be I'm Falling In Love, Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye) #11-20: Break Up To Make Up, I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock & Roll Band), Ain't No Woman (Like The One I Got), Rocky Mountain High #21-30: Dancing In The Moonlight, Hummingbird, Space Oddity, You're So Vain, Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree, The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia #31-40: um... er... uh... none?**
* Eddie Money and David Bowie get my Shooda Dun Better Picks this week. I love the sax line in IWGB along with the contemplative feel of the song. SO is such a quirky yet appropriately moody song... it all works:
** BONUS: Has the bottom ten of any AT40 show performed as poorly on the charts as this group? Of the ten songs between #31-40, only two of them made it past #31. I'm not saying they are bad songs... but none of them click with me.

3/14/87:Cameo - Candy Hipsway - The Honeythief Shirley Murdock - As We LayTina Turner - What You Get Is What You See Wang Chung - Let´s Go Around the world (part 2)Jimmy Petterson came to Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Pinzgau) as a ski instructor in 1973. That was the beginning of an adventure trip that would subsequently lead him to the most exotic ski areas on earth. He grew up in California in a family who loved skiing. His mother, who was born in Vienna, was the first state-certified ski instructor in California. His father was Norwegian. Together they owned a small ski area. Little Jimmy was put on skis at the age of two and from then on the passion never let him go. Jimmy Petterson studied history in Los Angeles. He is a trained history teacher, but has never practiced this profession. The passion for skiing became too great. In order to be able to finance his travels at a young age, he worked as a bartender, caretaker and street musician. He lists over 650 ski areas in 75 countries in two new illustrated books. He documents, categorizes and describes every ski area he has visited on a total of 1,000 pages. So, here´s my " world-hits"-edition for this week: 3/14/87:Aretha Franklin & George Michael - I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) Bon Jovi - Livin´ On A Prayer Janet Jackson - Let´s Wait Awhile Madonna - Open Your Heart Prince - Sign ´O´ The Times Time for an extra: Iggy PopThe musician, known as the "Godfather of Punk", is regarded as a pioneer and companion of punk rock and related styles. Due to his dynamic to excessive stage presence, he gained the reputation of an exalted artist. In March 2010 Iggy Pop was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in recognition of his work. In 1987 Iggy Pop reached #10 in England and #1 in New Zealand with "Real Wild Child":
from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
