May 10: ...Donovan. The eclectic Scotsman embraced a myriad of musical styles throughout his career. Folk, jazz, psychedelia, and calypso were all elements of the ever-changing genres he employed through his hit making years. A 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Donovan will embark on his 50th Anniversary Sunshine Superman tour in the fall of 2016. On this Top 5 single, Donovan is accompanied by John Paul Jones, John Bonham, and Jimmy Page. Hurdy Gurdy Man - DonovanInitially released as a "B" side, it would become his last Top 10 hit. He is allegedly backed by Paul McCartney on vocals and tambourine. Atlantis - Donovan
May 10: ...Bono Born Paul Hewson, Sir Bono was granted an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II for his musical and humanitarian work. He was Time Magazine co-person of the year in 2005 (with Bill & Linda Gates). With U2, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. The band's 22 Grammys (34 nominations) are the most by any group. It was a stunning experience when I first heard the band's initial Top 40 single, and it still strikes an emotional chord to this day. Pride (In The Name Of Love) - U2The critically acclaimed "The Joshua Tree" saw the band at its peak, yielding a pair of #1 singles. The second one is a favorite. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2May 10: ...Arthur Alexander Arthur holds the distinction of being the only artist to have his songs recorded by the Beatles [Anna (Go To Him)], the Rolling Stones [You Better Move On], and Bob Dylan [Sally Sue Brown]. "You Better Move On" was Arthur's only Top 40 hit, peaking at #24 in 1962. Steve Alaimo covered Arthur's "Every Day I Have To Cry". It proved to be the highest charting of his 9 Hot 100 hits, peaking at #46. Steve holds the record of the most Hot 100 hits without reaching the Top 40. Arthur did not record the song until 1975. A comeback of sorts, it was his first Hot 100 hit in 12 years. Released as "Every Day I Have To Cry Some", it would peak one notch higher at #45. He also charted briefly on the R & B 100 with "Sharing The Night Together" in 1976, three years before Dr. Hook took it into the Top 10. In the early 70s, Arthur released a Dennis Linde penned tune that missed the charts. A couple of months later it turned into a #2 smash for some singer named Elvis (maybe you heard of him). May 11: ...Eric Burdon. The front man for the Animals and briefly War joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blued Combo in 1962. They renamed themselves the Animals shortly thereafter. They were at the forefront of the British Invasion. Like the Rolling Stones, they were blues oriented. Amazingly for all the hits they had, the original band only reached the Top 10 twice. Their first Hot 100 single "The House Of The Rising Sun" was their only chart-topper. They also peaked at #10 with "See See Rider". The initial incarnation broke up late in 1966. Eric reformed the band as Eric Burdon and the Animals early the following year and they had a series of psychedelic based hits until their breakup in 1969. Their highest charting hit was the #9 "San Franciscan Nights". The original Animals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. He fronted War for a couple of albums, then formed the Eric Burdon Band. The original Animals would reunite briefly in the mid-70s and early 80s, releasing well received albums each time. Eric is currently touring in Australia, and is scheduled to tour the US in the summer. Like Springsteen's "Born To Rum", this anthem also peaked at an amazingly low #23 when released as a single in 1965. It's My Life - AnimalsFrom the second incarnation, this amazing anti-war epic was the Animals last Top 40 hit reaching #14. Sky Pilot - Eric Burdon and the AnimalsHis only Top 40 hit with War peaked at #3. Going with the long version. Spill The Wine - Eric Burdon and WarMay 11: ... Claude "Butch" Trucks, drummer and a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band. His uncle was Virgil Trucks, a major league pitcher who won 177 games in his 17 year career. He also threw 2 no-hitters in 1952. He was one of the oldest living former players in baseball when he passed away in 2013 at the age of 95. Butch is the uncle of Derek Trucks, frontman for the Derek Trucks Band. He also joined the Allman Brothers Band in 1999. Butch and Jai Johanny Johanson were part of the dual drumming section of the Allman Brothers. Butch was the rock and roll power drummer while Jai added a jazz-flavor drumming to the band's catalog of tunes. Butch stayed with the band until the very end. Their last concert was October 29, 2014 at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. He holds down the steady beat while the band takes no prisoners in this early live classic. May 12: ... Burt Bachrach. A six time Grammy and three time Oscar winner, Burt has created with Hal David some of the most enduring standards of all time. At least 73 of his compositions have reached the Top 40. Burt and Hal's most notable collaboration was with Dionne Warwick. She had 22 Top 40 hits with the pair including 9 that reached the Top 10. Some of the #1 hits he wrote or co-wrote include "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head", "(They Long To Be) Close To You", "This Guy's In Love With You", and "That's What Friends Are For". Burt was not too crazy initially about the recording of this great song he wrote with Hal David. It proved to be a standard reaching #4 in 1967... I Say A Little Prayer - Dionne Warwick...and again peaking at #10 the following year when covered by the Queen of Soul. I Say A Little Prayer - Aretha FranklinFirst recorded by Manfred Mann, this proved to be another version that Burt was not too fond of. But I loved this take on a lost 60s classic that peaked at #52 in 1966. My Little Red Book - LoveMay 12: ... Steve Winwood. Steve was only 14 when he joined the Spencer Davis Group. They had their first UK #1 single in 1965 with "Keep On Running". He co-wrote and sang lead on the classics "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm A Man" before leaving the band to form Traffic. Joining forces with lyricist Jim Capaldi, Steve and Jim formed a songwriting partnership that produced the majority of Traffic's material such as "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" and "Paper Sun". After Traffic folded, they continued to write together producing material for their solo albums. As a solo artist, Steve has reached the Top 10 six times and topped the Hot 100 twice with "Higher Love" and "Roll With It". He has won two Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of Traffic in 2005. In 1969, he formed the supergroup Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. Their only album (self-titled) reached #1 and produced this rock masterpiece. May 13: ...Ritchie Valens. He was only seventeen when he perished in that fateful plane crash that also took the lives of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and pilot Roger Peterson. He was fearful of flying. The day he attended his grandfather's funeral two planes crashed over the playground of the school he attended. Several of this friends were killed or injured as a result of this tragedy. He was known as the "Little Richard of the (San Fernando) Valley". Musically, he was one of the forefathers of Latino rock and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Though "La Bamba" has since become a 50s standard, it peaked at #22 and was the "B" side of this #2 hit. Donna - Ritchie ValensHis first charting single is a lost 50s classic peaking at #42. It would become a Top 25 hit when covered by the McCoys in the mid-60s and again in 1987 by Los Lobos. Come On, Let's Go - Ritchie ValensMay 13: ...Stevie Wonder His 1963 album recorded at the Regal Theatre in Chicago was titled "Recorded Live: The 12 Year Old Genius". His career has proven that calling him a genius at any point was a understatement. He's a 25 time Grammy Award winner, most for a solo artist. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Named as a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2009. These are a few of the accolades that have been bestowed upon Stevie through the years. With a massive catalog like his, some great songs have been forgotten through the years. Here's a 60s favorite of mine that peaked at #9 in 1968. Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day - Stevie WonderFrom the 70s, a great track from "Innervisions", my favorite album from Stevie. Golden Lady - Stevie WonderFinally from the 80s, who better to sing Happy Birthday to Stevie Wonder than Stevie Wonder? Happy Birthday - Stevie Wonder Bonus: It's also the birthday of Eivets Rednow. Like Stevie, Eivets also recorded for Motown. Mr. Rednow could almost be called a one hit "wonder". His only Hot 100 single was co-written with Hal David by a man whose celebrated his 87th birthday "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday", Burt Bachrach. It peaked at #66 in 1968. Alfie - Eivets Rednow

With the Rascals, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. After their breakup in the early seventies, he joined Bulldog who just missed the Top 40 with "No". Later in the seventies, he was a member of Fotomaker. They released 3 albums before disbanding. In recent years, he has reunited with the Rascals in a series of theatre appearances. Their story, "The Rascals: Once Upon A Dream" was a combination concert/theatrical event. Their story was acted out on stage a la "Jersey Boys", but the original Rascals were the band playing the hits live. Last night, Gene appeared on "The David Letterman Show" sitting in on guitar with the house band. The Rascals last Top 40 single was a great tune, topping out at #26 in 1969. Carry Me Back - Rascals

He switched to rock briefly with his brother Terry forming Barefoot. He joined the Whole World in 1970 playing bass and some lead guitar. He secured a week of studio time and recorded Part One of "Tubular Bells". Part Two would follow stretched over several months and numerous sessions. "Tubular Bells" was the inaugural album released in 1973 on Richard Branson's label Virgin records. A single edit used in the movie "The Exorcist" would be his only Hot 100 hit in the US peaking at #7. The album would become a #3 smash in the US and earned Mike a Grammy in 1975. In the UK it would spend a week at #1 dethroning his second album "Hergest Ridge" from the top spot. Mike continues to record today. He has released over 25 albums, the latest being "Man On The Rocks" in 2014. Featuring vocals by Maggie Reilly, this UK single would peak at #45 in 1982. He was also in Savoy Brown from 1968 to 1970, the band that spun off Foghat. They continue to tour with Roger on the skins playing fests, casinos, cruises, and special events. He started out playing rock and roll in various high school bands that he formed. He played piano on a couple of gigs backing Bobby Vee. Eventually deciding rock and roll wasn't serious enough, he began gravitating toward folk music. He dropped out after a year at the University of Minnesota, and moved to New York in search of gigs and to meet his idol Woody Guthrie. His work eventually caught the attention of Columbia records who signed him to a contract in 1962. His self-titled debut album sold poorly. The label considered dropping him, but were dissuaded by Johnny Cash and his producer John Hammond. The follow-up "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" proved to be successful and began a string of critically acclaimed albums containing iconic songs such as "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times The Are A-Changin'", "My Back Pages", and "Chimes Of Freedom". The latter two were among many Dylan tunes covered by the Byrds. Bob Dylan changed the face of folk music when he went electric with "Bringing It All Back Home" in 1965. Also in 1965 two of his classic singles "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Positively 4th Street" became Top 10 smashes. The remainder of the decade continues his string of creative and critically acclaimed albums "Highway 61 Revisited", "Blonde On Blonde", "John Wesley Harding". and "Nashville Skyline". Classics like "All Along The Watchtower", "Lay Lady Lay", and "Just Like A Woman" are three of the many songs that were highlights of this series of albums. His 70s masterpiece is "Blood On The Tracks" and he became a Travelling Wilbury in the 80s. He continues to record and perform to this day, releasing "Shadows In The Night" earlier this year. Dylan has won many awards throughout his career including 11 Grammy Awards, one Academy Award and one Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in May 2012. His son Jakob is a 2 time Grammy award winner with the Wallflowers. From 1975, this beautiful song from "Blood On The Tracks" would peak at #31. Tangled Up In Blue - Bob Dylan
