April 15: ...Dave Edmunds. After bouncing around in various bands, he hit the UK charts with the band Love Sculpture. Their single "Sabre Dance" would peak at #5. In 1970 as Dave was preparing to release a cover of Wilbert Harrison's "Let's Work Together", he learned that Canned Heat had already issued their version. He adapted the arrangement he intended to use for his version to a song first recorded by Smiley Lewis in the mid-50s. "I Hear You Knocking" would top the UK charts, and peak at #4 in the US. In the mid-70s he formed Rockpile with Nick Lowe. As previously mentioned on Nick Lowe's birthday (March 24), the band could not record as Rockpile until the early 80s because Dave and Nick were locked into recording contracts with different labels. Releases with Dave as lead singer were credited to him as a solo artist. Rockpile only completed one album under their name before splitting, allegedly due to disagreements between the managers of Dave and Nick. Dave has recorded sparingly since the mid-80s, but occasionally tours. He was on the road twice with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band in 1992 and 2000. He also did an extensive UK tour in 2007. Late in 2013 he released "...Again", an album of 1990s recordings plus 4 new tracks. Besides "I Hear You Knocking", Dave's biggest UK hit was this #4 Elvis Costello's cover released in 1979. Recorded with Rockpile, it reached #65 in the US. Girls Talk - Dave EdmundsInexplicably, this Jeff Lynne penned and produced tune only reached #39 in the US and missed the UK Top 40 altogether. Slipping Away - Dave EdmundsApril 15: ...Roy Clark. Yes, he was the host of "Hee Haw". For all of the down home country humor that was skewered by the critics, "Hee Haw" ran on network TV and syndication a combined total of 23 years. He was very influential in popularizing the country and bluegrass music genres. He is a Grand Old Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame member. He is a master of many instruments, most notably guitar and banjo. He was the first country star to have his own venue in Branson, Missouri. Roy's only Top 40 hit peaked at #19 in 1969. In 1995, Roy sang the song at Mickey Mantle's funeral honoring his request. Yesterday When I Was Young - Roy ClarkOn a lighter note... www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgeW6pc-y5o

April 16: ...Dusty Springfield. The UK blue-eyed soul singer would have celebrated her 77th birthday today. Unfortunately her life was cut short due to breast cancer in 1999, two weeks short of her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Among her 11 top 40 hits were three Top 10 solo. Her biggest hit was recorded with the Pet Shop Boys. "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" would peak at #2 in 1987. This Hal David/Burt Bachrach AC classic from "Casino Royale" was nominated for an Oscar and would peak at #22 on the Hot 100. The Look Of Love - Dusty Springfield
April 16: ...Stephen Singleton (also listed as April 17). Stephen was the saxophonist for ABC from 1980 - 1984. He appeared on their first Top 20 hit in the US. The Look Of Love - ABCApril 16: ... "Lonesome Dave" Peverett In 1971, he and three other members of Savoy Brown left the band forming Foghat. With his guitar work and lead vocals, the band released a string of successful boogie-blues based albums through the 70s before eventually breaking up in the mid-80s. The band re-formed after a hiatus of a couple of years without Dave who had retired. Dave reunited with the band in 1993, and performed with them until his passing in 2000. Foghat charted in the Top 40 five times, with "Slow Ride" peaking halfway up (#20). As Casey mentioned on AT 40, it took a 10 week "slow ride" to its peak position after debuting in its fifth week on the Hot 100 at #40. From their fifth album (first platinum album) here's the title track. It was released as the follow-up to "Slow Ride" and peaked at #45. Fool For The City - Foghat

April 17: ....Jan Hammer. The multi-Grammy award winning keyboardist/synthesist first gained notoriety with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. He has done several collaborations with Jeff Beck through the years. He has also worked with Joni Mitchell, Neal Schon, Mick Jagger, and Carlos Santana among many others. He gained acclaim scoring the music for the "Miami Vice" TV series. This classic Jeff Beck track received a makeover when performed live with Jan's band. Freeway Jam - Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer GroupOn November 9, 1985 he topped the Hot 100 with this single. It was the last instrumental to top the charts until Baauer's "Harlem Shake" came along in 2013. Presenting the 12" extended mix. Miami Vice Theme - Jan HammerApril 17: ..."The Man With The Golden Ear", Don Kirshner. He co-owned Aldon Music beginning in the late 1950s. Many of the Brill Building songwriters were under contract to this publishing company including Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield, Paul Simon, and Neil Diamond. He was also influential in the development of Bobby Darin's career. He founded Chairman Records; the label had a top 40 hit with "Martian Hop". He also founded the Calendar label which eventually became the Kirshner label. The early Archies material were the most notable released on Calendar, and continued into the Kirshner label. The majority of the Kansas recordings were also released on Kirshner. In 1966, he became president of Colgems records. The label was hired by the producers of "The Monkees" to provide songs for the TV show. The partnership proved to be extremely successful with top ten hits written by King & Goffin, Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, and Neil Diamond. It was also very volatile. A struggle for creative control between Kirshner and the Monkees eventually led to Kirshner's dismissal. In 1972 ABC asked Kirshner to be producer of a bi-weekly TV series called "In Concert". He left the series a year later and began his own syndicated series "Don Kirsnhner's Rock Concert". The series ran until the dawn of the MTV era in 1981. In 2007 Don received the Songwriters Hall of Fame Abe Olman Publishing Award. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012. This was the other Archies' Top 10 single, the follow-up to "Sugar Sugar" Jingle Jangle - Archies

April 18: ...Rick Moranis. Rick first stepped into the spotlight as a cast member in the sketch comedy "Second City Television (SCTV)". His career kicked into high gear with appearances in several box-office success movies such as "Ghostbusters", "Spaceballs", "Parenthood", "Little Shop Of Horrors", and "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" and all sequels. Rick went into hiatus from the movie industry in the late 90s, focusing on raising his children. His wife had passed away in the early 90s from breast cancer. He has done animated voice-over roles, and released several comedy albums. His most recent release was "My Mother's Brisket & Other Love Songs" in 2013. Rick became one-half of a pop-culture phenomenon on "SCTV" in the early 80s. When the program was sold to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (with syndication in the US), the program had to come up with two minutes of programming that could be classified as "identifiable Canadian content". From these demands the McKenzie brothers, Bob (Rick Moranis) and Doug (Dave Thomas) and the public service sketch "Great White North" were created. The sketch became a weekly staple, and the album "Great White North" took off to the Top 10 on the Billboard album charts in 1982. The single, featuring vocals from Geddy Lee of Rush peaked at #16. Take Off - Bob and Doug McKenzieThough Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas never had a Hot 100 hit on their own, members of their family tree (fiction and non-fiction) have. For example, Dave Thomas's real life brother was a one-hit wonder peaking at #34 in early 1974... Painted Ladies - Ian Thomas...from "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids", Rick's movie wife bubbled under for 9 weeks in 1967 peaking at #105... The Flower Children - Marcia Strassman...Marcia played Margie Cutler on "M*A*S*H*", but was best known as Julie Kotter on the "Welcome Back, Kotter" TV series. Travolta would be the obvious choice, but we'll go with the series namesake. He reached #91 in 1977 coining his signature phrase. Up Your Nose - Gabriel KaplanApril 18: ...Greg Eklund, drummer for Everclear. He joined Everclear in 1994 and remained with the band until 2003. After his tenure with Everclear, he joined his brother Mark in the Oohlas as on vocals and guitar. Everclear samples Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff" in this 2000 throwback tribute. It topped the Bubbling Under Charts (#101) and reached #15 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. "I like pop. I like soul. I like rock, but I never liked disco!" A M Radio - Everclear Bonus: It is also Mark Tremonti's birthday. As lead guitarist, he was a founding member of Creed. He also helped form Alter Bridge and the band is still active, releasing the album "Fortress" in the fall of 2013. He also formed Tremonti. Their band's upcoming release "Cauterize" will be available June, 2015. It features Wolfgang Van Halen on bass. The band's advance single is a good one, if you're a fan of melodic metal. Another Heart - Tremonti

April 19: ...Mark "Flo" Volman. Mark and Howard "Eddie" Kaylan were members of the surf-rock group the Crossfires. When the band secured a contract with White Whale records, they changed their name to the Tyrtles. Eventually, they settled on the more conventionally spelled Turtles. They reached the Top 10 with their first single, a cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe". They would have 4 additional Top 10 hits, with "Happy Together" spending three weeks on top the Hot 100 in 1967. The band broke up in 1970, Mark and Howard joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. However, language in their contract forbade them from using the Turtles or their own names in a musical context. They redubbed themselves as Phlorescent Leach and Eddie or Flo & Eddie. The duo released several albums in the 70s and did session work. Since the mid-80s, The Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie has headlined the "Happy Together" tour which also features several bands/artists from the 60s and early 70s. The Grass Roots, Buckinghams, Association, Gary Puckett, Peter Noone, and Mark Lindsay are some of the artists that have joined the tour through the years. Mark has also been an associate professor at Belmont University (Nashville, TN) for the Entertainment Industry Studies Program. He has conducted music industry seminars throughout the country from junior high to university levels. He offers music business and entertainment consulting via his website "Ask Professor Flo". Featuring a couple of Top 40 Turtles classics... You Know What I Mean - TurtlesShe's My Girl - Turtles...and a couple of notable session performances, with Flo & Eddie providing backing vocals to these Top 10 hits. Bang A Gong (Get It On) - T RexHungry Heart - Bruce SpringsteenApril 19: ...Genya Ravan. Commercially, she was best known as lead singer of Goldie and the Gingerbreads and Ten Wheel Drive. She's been a producer for acts like Ronnie Spector and punk band the Dead Boys . She's also was a radio show host after being recruited by Steven Van Zandt. She's a personal favorite of mine. Ten Wheel Drive did reach the Hot 100, peaking at #74 with "Morning Much Better" in 1970. Michael Zager who would reach the Top 40 later in the decade with "Let's All Chant" was also a member. We'll go with a non-charting single from Genya Ravan and Ten Wheel Drive. Unlike Meaghan Trainor, it's all about that brass for me. Tightrope - Ten Wheel Drive With Genya Ravan

April 20: ... Luther Vandross. From an in-demand background vocalist to an 8 time Grammy award winner, Luther carved out a legendary career during his short time on earth. Hard to believe he's been gone nearly 11 years. The great thing is that his career stands shoulder-to-shoulder with many of the artists he supported in the early years, and exceeds others. Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Ben E. King, and Donna Summer are examples. He also performed duets with Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Beyoncé, three of the top selling artists since the late 80s. His first Top 40 appearance was on the R&B charts singing lead for this band. It peaked at #23 in 1980. Searching - ChangeHis highest charting single on the Hot 100 as a solo artist reached #4 in 1991 Power Of Love/Love Power - Luther VandrossApril 20: ...Craig Frost, keyboardist extraordinaire. Craig joined Grand Funk Railroad for the "Phoenix" album in 1972, and remained with the band until their initial breakup in 1976. He joined Mel Schacher and Don Brewer in the short-lived band Flint. They released one album before disbanding. In the late seventies, he became a member of Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band. He continues in that capacity through their just completed tour. Craig's contributions to Grand Funk came at the time they were transitioning from hard rock to a more radio friendly sound. Much to the dismay of die hard fans, it proved to be highly successful topping the Hot 100 twice. His introduction to the masses came with this great single that peaked at #29 in 1972. Rock And Roll Soul - Grand Funk Railroad

April 21: ...Paul Davis. Paul reached the Top 40 eight times between 1974 and 1982. In the latter half of the 80s, Paul would make his mark on the Country charts, writing #1 singles for Dan Seals ("Bop" and "Meet Me in Montana" [duet with Marie Osmond]), and Tanya Tucker and Paul Overstreet "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love". He also guested on Marie Osmond's #1 country single "You're Still New To Me". Paul died one day after his 60th birthday on April 22, 2008. His first Top 10 was the one that was much discussed on AT 40 and tracked by loyal Billboard followers everywhere. Peaking at #7 and charting for 43 weeks, it set the longevity record for weeks in the Hot 100. That record would be "tainted" by Soft Cell four years later. I Go Crazy - Paul DavisIn 1978, he would peak at #17 with this pop ballad. Sweet Life - Paul DavisApril 21:... John Weider guitarist for Eric Burdon and the Animals. After the original Animals broke up, Eric Burdon formed a new group in 1966 and moved the band's direction from blues-rock to a psychedelic sound. Renamed Eric Burdon and the Animals, the band featured John Weider on guitar, bass, and violin. This version would reach the Top 40 five times, and hit the Top 10 twice peaking at #9 with "San Franciscan Nights". The band broke up late in 1968. John joined the UK group the Family as bass guitarist from 1969 - 1971. They would reach the Top 10 on the UK album charts three times during his tenure. He released a series of solo albums from the late seventies to the early 90s. The last Top 40 single from Eric Burdon and the Animals peaked at #14 in 1968. It's an epic, thought-provoking commentary on war and its consequences. Originally split into two parts on the 45, the song is presented here in its entirety. Sky Pilot (Parts 1 & 2) - Eric Burdon and the Animals

April 22: ...Glen Campbell. Birthday wishes go to Glen and his family, as well as thoughts and prayers. Here's hoping for a moment of clarity as he nears the end of his battle with Alzheimer's. He joined the Champs at the end of 1959 after they had success with "Tequila". Also in the band at the time were Jim Seals and Dash Crofts. He reached the Hot 100 in 1961 with his version of "Turn Around, Look At Me" peaking at #62. He was one of the "go-to" guitarists during the 60s in Los Angeles as a member of the Wrecking Crew. He also reached the Top 10 as a guitarist with the Hondells, and recorded (guitar - "Pet Sounds") and toured with the Beach Boys in 1965 filling in for Brian Wilson. His multi-media breakthrough began in the late 60s. He became the voice for several of Jimmy Webb's songs that have endured as classics, including "Galveston" and "Wichita Lineman". He hosted the "Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" from 1969-1972, and was nominated for a Golden Globe for "True Grit" and an Oscar for the title song. He earned 5 Grammys in the country and contemporary music categories. The 70s saw Glen reach the top of the Hot 100 with "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights" and chart several times on the Hot 100, Adult Contemporary and Country charts. He continued performing and recording until 2012, finishing with one final "Goodbye" tour. He won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2012, and shared a Grammy in 2014 for his final recording "I'm Not Gonna Miss You". He received a lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Country Music earlier this month. The documentary "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me" has recently been nominated for a Peabody award. Glen could rock with the best of them. It's his memorable opening riff (compressed and recorded backwards on the recording) along with his guitar solo that grace this psychedelic Top 10 hit from an unlikely source. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) - Kenny Rogers and the First EditionHe was the uncredited lead vocalist on this studio group's lost 60s classic My World Fell Down - SagittariusOne of my favorites, it peaked at #23 in late 1969. Try A Little Kindness - Glen CampbellApril 22: ...Paul Carrack Paul has loaned his vocal talents to many classic songs. After a short stint in Roxy Music, he joined Squeeze and sang lead vocals on their lost classic "Tempted". He and Nick Lowe split lead vocals with the band Noise To Go which eventually evolved into Nick Lowe and his Cowboy Outfit. After the dissolution of Nick Lowe's band, Paul joined Mike + The Mechanics singing lead on their #1 hit "The Living Years". He also was a member of the Bleeding Heart Band supporting Roger Waters. He reunited with Roger for the 1992 "The Wall In Berlin" event singing lead on the Pink Floyd classic "Hey You". Along the way, he made several attempts to launch a solo career. He would reach #37 in 1982 with "I Need You". In 1987, he would reach the Top 10 peaking at #9 with "Don't Shed A Tear". The first time we met Paul, he was singing lead vocals on this #3 classic from 1975. How Long - Ace
Birthday wishes also go out to the late, great Benjamin Clarence "Bull Moose" Jackson who would have been 96. Bull Moose Jackson made his mark in the late 40s releasing both romantic and bawdy jump blues style tunes. He topped the R&B charts twice with the romantic "I Love You, Yes I Do" (3 weeks), and "I Can't Go On Without You" (9 weeks) with his band the Buffalo Bearcats. The band's bawdy side was represented with the Top 10 R&B hits "I Want A Bowlegged Woman" and "Why Don't You Haul Off And Love Me". In 1961, a re-recording of "I Love You, Yes I Do" gave him his only Hot 100 single peaking at #98. He retired to the catering business only to be rediscovered in the mid-seventies by the front man from the Bluescats, Carl Grefensette. With the Bluescats as support, Bull Moose launched a successful comeback in the late 70s touring the Northeastern US. His success spread internationally in the 80s, before his passing in 1989. From the bawdy side of Bull Moose, this tune became his signature song over the years. Aerosmith famously covered it in the mid-seventies. Big Ten Inch Record - Bull Moose Jackson and his Buffalo Bearcats
Finally, a happy 45th birthday to Mother Earth. In her honor, here's a #17 hit from the Rare Earth album "Ecology" Born To Wander - Rare Earth

April 23: ...Narada Michael Walden. Drummer, singer, songwriter, and most notably producer, Narada Michael Walden has produced hits for some of the must successful acts of the 80s and 90s. He has also owned and operated Tarpan Studios in San Raphael, California since the mid-1980s. He was very instrumental during the early part of Whitney Houston's career as well as Aretha Franklin's comeback. As drummer, he worked with acts as diverse as Jeff Beck and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Grammy awards include 1988 Producer of the Year, 1993 Album of the Year (The Bodyguard), and 1985 R&B Song of the Year (Freeway of Love). He also worked with Aretha producing this #1 duet... I Knew You Were Waiting For Me - Aretha Franklin and George Michael... and returned this group to #1 for a third time, producing this hit from the "Mannequin" soundtrack. Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - StarshipApril 23: ...Roy Orbison After beginning with Sun records, Roy achieved his greatest success on the Monument label releasing 9 Top 10 singles between 1960 and 1964. Two of them "Running Scared" and "Oh, Pretty Woman" topped the US charts. A switch to the MGM label in 1965 on a million dollar contract was unsuccessful, resulting in only 1 Top 30 single. His career was revived in the late seventies/early eighties with his songs being covered by Linda Ronstadt, Don McLean, and Van Halen. He earned two Grammys in duets with Emmylou Harris "That Lovin' You Feelin' Again" and k.d. lang, a re-recording of "Crying". Bruce Springsteen inducted him into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987. Closing his speech with a reference to Bruce's song "Thunder Road" he said, "I wanted a record with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector—but, most of all, I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison. Now everyone knows that no one sings like Roy Orbison." Bruce joined Roy in concert a few months later. "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" was a highly successful concert video featuring contributions from Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes, James Burton and k.d. lang Roy's career was revived in the late eighties with "Mystery Girl", an album produced by Jeff Lynne. It included his final Top 10 single "You Got It". At the same time the Traveling Wilburys were formed. Their highly successful initial album featured Roy as Lefty Wilbury along with Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Bob Dylan. Roy's health issues through the years led to his premature passing late in 1988 at the age of 52. He endured personal tragedies including losing his first wife in a motorcycle accident and his two eldest sons in a fire a his Tennessee home while on tour in the UK. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert in the mid-80s at a small venue. He still had the voice, and the look on his face showed genuine appreciation for the ovations given during that priceless performance that evening. For fans of insurance ads and free-range chickens, here's Roy's epic song that was his only Top 30 hit on MGM. Ride Away - Roy Orbison

April 24: ... St. Clair Lee, singer for the Hues Corporation. Before achieving success on their own, the Hues Corporation was the opening act for greats like Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Milton Berle, and Glen Campbell. In 1970, the recorded an unsuccessful single for Liberty records. Their break came when they appeared in the Blaxploitation movie "Blackula". They recorded three songs written by Waldo Holmes for the movie which led to a recording contract with RCA. Their first Hot 100 single is this lost 70s classic that peaked at #63 in 1974. Freedom For The Stallion - Hues CorporationAfter the follow-up single failed to chart, Waldo Holmes came up with the group's signature song that would sail to the top of the charts in 1974. Rock The Boat - Hues CorporationThey would reach the Top 20 a second time with "Rockin' Soul", and reach the Hot 100 with 2 other releases before disbanding in 1978. They reunited in the 90s for tour dates and a PBS disco special. St. Clair passed away in 2011.
April 24: ... Hubert Ann Kelley. Like St. Clair Lee, Hubert Ann was also one of the three vocalists for the Hues Corporation. Upon the breakup of the group, she would become a minister. She was also a part of the 90s reunion. April 24: ...Doug Clifford, one half of the Creedence Clearwater Revival's rhythm section Doug was the drummer of CCR and has been touring with fellow band member Stu Cook as Creedence Clearwater Revisited since the mid-90s. Together they were the rhythm section that supported CCR with all the memorable hits and classic albums of the late sixties and early seventies. April 25: ...Björn Ulvaeus. Björn and Benny Andersson met in 1966 and formed a lifelong friendship and musical partnership. Together, they were the male half of Abba, and composed several musicals most notably "Chess" and "Mamma Mia!". They also produced the film version of "Mamma Mia!". Björn was married to Abba member Agnetha Fältskog from 1971-1980. They remained together after the divorce until Abba broke up in 1982. Björn has been married since 1981 to music journalist Lena Källersjö. Members of Abba have repeatedly said they will not be reuniting. They did make an appearance earlier this year promoting Björn's Abba-themed dinner theater in Stockholm (Mamma Mia! - The Party). The 1974 Eurovision Song Contest Winner, it went to #1 in several countries and marked the debut of Abba in the US. It was a Top 10 smash, peaking at #6. Waterloo - AbbaThey peaked at #3 in 1978 with this infectious little ditty. Take A Chance On Me - AbbaApril 25: ...Stu Cook, the other half of Creedence Clearwater's rhythm section. Like Doug Clifford yesterday, Stu celebrates his 70th birthday today. After the breakup of CCR, Stu and Doug joined the Don Harrison Band for a couple of albums. In the early 80s, Stu produced ex-13th Floor Elevators, Roky Erickson and his band the Aliens for a couple of LPs. Stu went country in the mid-eighties/early 90s as a member of Southern Pacific. In 1993, he auditioned for the Rolling Stones after the departure of bassist Bill Wyman. In 1995, he formed Creedence Clearwater Revisited with Doug Clifford and they have toured together since. We highlight Stu's bass with this great CCR tune that was the flip side of "Up Around The Bend". It was the subject of legal controversy in the 80s.
