Surprise for me was that the #1 song of 1961, Tossing and Turning didn't make the countdown.

Surprise for me was that the #1 song of 1961, Tossing and Turning didn't make the countdown. This was a listener voted countdown, not a chart performance countdown. True, but there is a correlation between what people buy and like, and likely would vote for.

If Tossing and Turning was that popular, I reasoned that it was well liked and would get at least enough votes for a Top 100 position.

"Tossin' and Turnin'" is a great record, but you may have noticed that the voting for this countdown leaned against songs that crossed over from the R&B chart. There are only two songs that came from Motown, for instance. Here are the top #1 songs that didn't make the countdown, ranked using Dann Isbell's Ranking the '60s, the go-to book for Satellite Survey specials: Title and artist | #1 rank | Overall rank | TOSSIN' AND TURNIN'...Bobby Lewis | #4 | #4 | I'M SORRY...Brenda Lee | #15 | #15 | SUGAR SHACK...Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs | #18 | #18 | PEOPLE GOT TO BE FREE...The Rascals | #21 | #21 | EVERYDAY PEOPLE...Sly & the Family Stone | #22 | #22 | RUNNING BEAR...Johnny Preston | #25 | #25 | STUCK ON YOU...Elvis Presley | #26 | #26 | WONDERLAND BY NIGHT...Bert Kaempfert | #30 | #30 | GET BACK...The Beatles | #37 | #38 | LOVE CHILD...Diana Ross & the Supremes | #38 | #39 | PEPPERMINT TWIST...Joey Dee & the Starliters | #39 | #40 | HELLO, DOLLY!...Louis Armstrong | #43 | #44 | HAPPY TOGETHER...The Turtles | #45 | #46 | MY HEART HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN...Connie Francis | #49 | #50 | WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL...The New Vaudeville Band | #51 | #52 | DOMINIQUE...The Singing Nun | #52 | #53 | EVERYBODY'S SOMEBODY'S FOOL...Connie Francis | #55 | #56 | CALCUTTA...Lawrence Welk | #56 | #57 | PONY TIME...Chubby Checker | #57 | #58 | DIZZY...Tommy Roe | #58 | #59 | BLUE VELVET...Bobby Vinton | #59 | #60 | HE'S SO FINE...The Chiffons | #60 | #61 | HEY PAULA...Paul & Paula | #61 | #62 | SOMETHIN' STUPID...Nancy & Frank Sinatra | #62 | #63 | BABY LOVE...The Supremes | #63 | #64 | WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO...The Supremes | #64 | #67 | THERE! I'VE SAID IT AGAIN...Bobby Vinton | #65 | #68 | I CAN'T HELP MYSELF...The Four Tops | #67 | #70 | FINGERTIPS...Little Stevie Wonder | #75 | #78 | COME SEE ABOUT ME...The Supremes | #76 | #79 | HEY! BABY...Bruce Channel | #78 | #81 | TEEN ANGEL...Mark Dinning | #79 | #82 | WE CAN WORK IT OUT...The Beatles | #82 | #86 | CAN'T BUY ME LOVE...The Beatles | #83 | #87 | DO WAH DIDDY DIDDY...Manfred Mann | #88 | #92 | JUDY IN DISGUISE...John Fred & His Playboy Band | #90 | #97 | HELP!...The Beatles | #92 | #99 | THE STRIPPER...David Rose | #94 | #101 | MICHAEL...The Highwaymen | #95 | #102 | MY BOYFRIEND'S BACK...The Angels | #96 | #103 | SOMEDAY WE'LL BE TOGETHER...Diana Ross & the Supremes | #97 | #104 | I FEEL FINE...The Beatles | #98 | #105 | CHAPEL OF LOVE...The Dixie Cups | #100 | #107 |

Remember Happy Together would not have been eligible since songs by the Turtles are disallowed on Sirius.

This week's presentation is from 1968-I believe the featured date is August 23rd.

8-24-68. The show will surely be shorter than last week's 5 hour and 20 minute episode.

I was listening to the Satellite Survey from August 24, 1968 a little while ago, and, according to my "Billboard's Top 10 Charts" book, Dave Hoeffel played the wrong song for his High Debut (of the Hot 100) survey extra. I forget what he actually played, but it should have been "Harper Valley PTA" by Jeannie C. Riley (debuting at #81). The mistake is particularly ironic considering the writer of that song, Tom T. Hall, just passed away. This would have been the perfect opportunity to eulogize this fine, talented singer/songwriter. (BTW, the following week, "Harper Valley PTA" would make a record-breaking leap up the chart to #7, eventually going to #1.)

Incorrect--Dave played the right song "Listen Here" by Eddie Harris. The song debuted at #67, but would never make the Top 40, peaking at #45. Next week's show is 1962, and most likely 9-1-62.

Incorrect--Dave played the right song "Listen Here" by Eddie Harris. The song debuted at #67, but would never make the Top 40, peaking at #45. Next week's show is 1962, and most likely 9-1-62. For a while I was quite confused concerning Dave playing the above song as the highest debut. You see, my "Billboard's Top 10 Charts" lists all the Top 10 weekly charts from mid 1958 to mid 1995, along with the highest debut for each week. For the week ending August 24, 1968, this book clearly lists "Harper Valley PTA" by Jeannie C. Riley as highest debuting single (#81). So I decided to get on the World Radio History website to check out back issues of Billboard from 1968. My research revealed that, at first glance, the Eddie Harris song was the highest debut for that chart date of August 24. However, the song's entry also said that it was its sixth week on the chart, not first week. Upon perusing through earlier weeks, I discovered that "Listen Here" had spent five consecutive weeks on the chart, then dropped off. In other words, "Listen Here" was RE-entering the Hot 100 the same week that "Harper Valley PTA" was debuting. Perhaps my reference book was only counting actual debuts, and not reentries. So I would say that Dave Hoeffel and I are both partially right.

I have the Top 10 book from Joel Whitburn that has every Top 10 from the Hot 100 charts from 1958 to 1988, and you are so correct for the entry for 8-24-68. It did in fact list Harper Valley PTA at #81 as the highest debut. So I am thinking that Joel did not count "Listen Here," since it had debuted previously.
Had I referenced the book instead of the Ultimate Music Data Base, I would have agreed, and thanks for pointing out that "Listen Here" was a reentry.
