A list of my favorite song that peaked at each position in the Hot 100. One restriction I placed is that a recording act cannot place more than 2 songs on the list. Growing up in the 60s and early 70s in Chicago, that time period will have a huge influence in my selections.
A twist: Instead of counting them down 100-1, we're going to do the countdown by the last digit in groups of 10. This group is the "oughts".
100 - The original reached #89 in 1961 and was the only Hot 100 charting single released on Motown's Miracle label. Five years later, the cover peaked in the anchor position by a different Motown group. Member Richard Street would later join the Temptations .
Greetings (This Is Uncle Sam) - Monitors
90 - From 1972, a long-treasured Chicago classic. Member Dave Bickler would provide lead vocals for Survivor during the first half of their charting years including "Eye Of The Tiger".
Summer Sun - Jamestown Massacre
80 - Speaking of Chicago classics, from early 1966 this one could be considered ground zero. This was the first significant hometown hit that opened the doors for local and regional radio airplay, and the first of ten hot 100 singles for this band.
I Confess - New Colony Six
70 - Beginning of this song is my ringtone. Unfortuntely, lead singer Jerry LaCroix passed away earlier this year, as well as the brother of the band's namesake. Straight ahead rocker from late 1971 - early 1972.
Keep Playin' That Rock 'N' Roll - Edgar Winter's White Trash
60 - Also lost iconic bass player Jack Bruce recently. His bass kicks off this 1969 classic rock staple written by Clapton and George Harrison. It was the last hot 100 single for this trio.
Badge - Cream
50 - This should have been a huge hit, and did reach #8 in the UK. Guessing this 1966 classic suffered from sounding similar to their first two hits, both which reached #7.
Till The End Of The Day - Kinks
40 - From 1971, one of my all-time favorites. Title track to an album whose cover was photographed by Candice Bergen. Song was written out of frustration of the band being "uninvited" to their lawyer's New Year's Eve party.
Charity Ball - Fanny
30 - Congratulations! He was recently elected to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Wish this 1977 tune was played more; always brings a smile to my face.
Lovely Day - Bill Withers
20 - Chicago R&B group that was inducted into the R&R HOF in 2004. This early 1968 tune was their first top 40 single.
There Is - Dells
10 - A great track written by Laura Nyro. Loved Cory Wells vocals on this 1969 classic as well as the whole album "Suitable For Framing".
Eli's Coming - Three Dog Night
Next up: The "nines"
