I'm sure that everybody knows that today is the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' performance on the Ed Sullivan. There is little doubt that performance changed the history of music. Well, the Beatles prescence has even been felt on AT40. In fact, on the first AT40 show, which was aired on July 4, 1970, Casey stated that the Beatles are the group of the century. I was amazed that Casey said that in 1970, since the Beatles had only been big in the states for only 6 years. Their No. 1 hit, "The Long and Winding Road" was No. 8 on the first AT40 show. The Beatles have been mentioned in several AT40 specials throughout its history:
Top 40 Recording Acts, Rock Era 1955-1971 Their song, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was No. 2 on that special countdown.
Top 40 Songs of the Rock Era 1955-1972 They placed 2 songs on that special, "Hey Jude" No. 2, and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" No. 4
Top 40 Artists 1967-1972 They were ranked No. 1
Top 40 Songs, 1968-1973 They placed 2 songs on that survey, "Hey Jude" and "Get Back".
Top 40 Recording Acts, Rock Era, 1955-1973 The Beatles were ranked No. 2 on that special, and a medley of some of their biggest hits were featured.
Top 40 British Artists' Hits Rock Era 1955-1974 The Beatles placed 13 hits on that special
Top 40 Beatles Era Songs 1964-1970 That special was aired in October 1976.
American Top 40 Book of Records, 1980
Top 40 Beatles Hits of All Time, 1981
Giants of Rock, 1986
It is amazing that the Beatles were featured in many A40 specials over the years.

As we are coming up on now the 59th (!!!!) anniversary of The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, I wanted to go back to this post. It is amazing how many times The Beatles were referenced during the first run of AT. However, I really can't think of many other times since 1988 that The Beatles have been. Outside of when Paul hit in 1989 and 2015, and when the Beatles hit on CT in 1996, were there other times when Shadoe, Casey, or Ryan mentioned the Beatles in a special segment since the first run? (AT or CT) I actually can think of one: the 1989 Labor Day show when Shadoe played "Medley" as the song with the longest title to hit the top 40 in the 80's. Though as the years pass I cannot remember if he talked about the Beatles or focused more on the unique title that Stars On gave us.

I heard the 20th Anniversary special that Shadoe did, yesterday. He mentioned the Beatles a few times and played "Silly Love Songs" as both the #1 song on the 4th of July and the #1 song of 1976. Mentioned that when George's "Give Me Love" knocked Paul's "My Love" out of the #1 spot, it was the first time in chart history that a former member of a group knocked another member of that group out of #1. Btw, I have Rob Durkee's American Top 40: The Countdown of the Century book which lists all the specials and songs played in each. But this special is omitted from it! Was going to reference it to answer your query instead of relying on my memory.
Oh almost forgot a great story about Paul. He went to Zimbabwe with a lot of music that he had written with the intention of doing the production to turn into a recording. But all of it was lost en route. He was there for 2 months and ended up taking all that time to write new material. Out of that experience came the Band on the Run album whereupon Shadoe played the title track. Most if not all of them are.

I don't think I have actually listened to that show (if memory serves correctly, that is AT 40 7/7/90. I have listened to the regular show, but your words will make me go back and listen to that one as well). Also, did "Free As A Bird" hit on Dees? It was during that period where he switched formats and don't remember if it hit or not. Not a part of the original question, but wanted to throw it out there.

Once AT40 started using other charts (in the middle of the Shadoe years) as it's basis, I wonder if it became difficult to refer to the previous Rock Era records set by the Beatles as relevant to the charting methodology being used by the contemporary show, and if they felt like bringing attention to the discrepancies in the charts being used throughout the show's history.
I often wondered how often listeners would legitimately write in to ask the same questions that would feature Beatle-centric answers (for example, the oft-cited chart record of occupying the top 5 spots on the Hot 100), or if the writers would simply incorporate those 'AT40 FAQs' as a go-to stretch story, or if some of the writers (or Casey himself) simply were Beatles fans themselves and would choose to find ways of sliding in Beatles references per their own whims.

Tell me another year you will hear The Beatles, John Travolta, DJ Quick, and the macarena 😶

Interesting to note that when this thread was first posted, it was less than eighteen years since the Beatles last AT 40 hit. Now, we are nineteen years since the thread originated! I never realized this version of the site has been around as long as Ryan has been hosting AT 40
