How about KISS? Paul Stanley sang lead on most of their hits, but their biggest hit "Beth" had Peter Criss on lead.

The Cars fit this description. Benjamin Orr sang lead on their biggest hit "Drive" while Ric Ocasek sang lead on all their other biggest hits and is the face of the group. Ben Orr also sang these songs Just What I Needed - hit # 27 Let's Go - hit # 14 It's All I Can Do -# 41 And share s lead on You Are The Girl I never knew Ben Orr sang songs other than "Drive" until recently, since that sounded so different from other Cars songs.

When I checked their Top 40 hits on Wikipedia, it looked like Gene Simmons sang lead on quite a few hits, and Criss also sang lead on "Hard Luck Woman". Also, Ace Frehley sang lead on the only solo Top 40 hit any of the group members had, "New York Groove", but he also sang lead on "Rocket Ride".

Fleetwood Mac .My all time fave bands had best results when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham signed on in 1975 then any other members in the past and after Lindsey left in 1987 .They top the charts with chart topper Rumours in 1977 and it land them their first number one hit "Dreams" on June 18 1977 AT40 countdown.
Also they had a good list of other top ten hits with the Rumours member lineup too. They will be on tour later this month too.I'll be there.

All good responses, but I was thinking of a singer actually leaving the band to be replaced by someone else so groups like The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, The Cars, and groups such as the Temptations would not fit this exact category. That's why I could only think of Survivor and Van Halen. 38 Special would definitely count as well as Starship. The Doobie Brothers is a good one as well.

Recall the Doobie Brothers started with Tom Johnston as lead singer, then he was eventually permanently replaced by Michael McDonald, who was credited with their 1979 #1 hit "What a Fool Believes". Johnston wasn't permanently replaced. He has been back in the band since 1987 I meant that Johnston was permanently replaced as lead singer. If this is incorrect, please inform.

Johnston was out of the Doobies for most of the Michael McDonald period, but came back for the late 80's reunion as Keith mentioned.

Genesis would fit differently as different singers, different results, Peter Gabriel sang on their 1969-1974 more album oriented rock, then after he left in 1975, Phil Collins came from behind the drums and kept that going for 2 more albums until "And Then There Were Three..." from 1978 started 'em off to a road of pop singles superstardom!
