On the 4-30-83 show, Casey played a snippet of "Der Kommissar" by Falco. It was, as far as I know, the first time that Falco had been heard on AT 40, yet he would not chart with his first Top 40 hit for almost three years with, "Rock Me Amadeus".
How many times has that happened when an artist that later hit the Top 40 had a song, a portion of a song, or even a commercial played on the show before they had their own hit? Exclude singers who have solo efforts outside of their band or this thread would go on forever! Also, exclude people who were "featured artists" and the such. Did anyone else, besides Falco, make an appearance on AT 40 before they would actually have a hit on the show?
I wonder if Michael Bolton and Richard Marx had commercials on AT 40 before they made it on the charts, lol.

This is a REALLY big stretch. It's not even the right show, but in 2009 on AT10, Casey did a story on Susan Boyle and played a drop of "I Dreamed A Dream" which is what won her the contest. If AT10 would've continued and IF they would've used the Mediabase chart (instead of airing their own Christmas shows), Susan would've been on there with one or 2 of her Christmas singles.

I like that. It's a stretch, but I like it. It really is hard to think of anyone who appeared before they officially charted. If I count CT 40, then we could say Dr. Dre showed up in 1990 on Michele's "Nicety" before hitting in 1993 with, "Nuthin' But A G Thang", but that's kind of a stretch as well because he could be seen in the back up role on the song. I knew it was hard but I didn't think it would be this hard. For some reason I was thinking Tevin Campbell had a snippet played of "Tomorrow" before he hit with "Round and Round" in 1991, but I might be imagining it.

Did AT40 ever play any songs from Genesis with Peter Gabriel as lead singer before he first hit the Top 40 with "Shock The Monkey"? I thought they did, but it might have been after Gabriel first charted.
And similar to the Dr. Dre example, Fergie was a backup singer on Martika's "Toy Soldiers" (Rick Dees even mentioned her real name - Stacy Ferguson - in a countdown from that time) before she charted with Wild Orchid (on CT40), The Black Eyed Peas, or solo.
And then there's the AT40 "Sneek Peek" segment from the 90s. There might have been some artists that got played in that segment before hitting the Top 40.

And then there's the AT40 "Sneek Peek" segment from the 90s. There might have been some artists that got played in that segment before hitting the Top 40. Three great points. To answer: I don't know about Gabriel, I like the Fergie reference...especially since Dees mentioned her. I think Mariah Carey has an uncredited part on "I Still Believe" by Brenda K. Starr as well. I think "Sneek Peek" would be a good place to find those...I'm sure there are tons there. How about we go at it from a different angle: How many artists had a song of theirs played before their debut on AT 40, and add artists BEFORE 1970. For example "Quarter To Three", I believe, was played in snippets and in whole before Gary "U.S." Bonds had his AT 40 debut in 1981. And that brings up another question: Did any artists that hit number one in the 60's (or first part of 1970) have their debut on AT 40 AFTER their number one archived song was played? If Bonds makes the cut, I can only think of three: Bonds, Louis Armstrong, and Chubby Checker. Lulu was close, but I'm pretty sure "To Sir With Love" was played on a week in which "I Could Never Miss You" was already on AT 40.

Louis Armstrong was played on the very first AT40.

I remember a videoclip of "Tomorrow", a Quincy Jones single on which Tevin Campbell was featured vocalist, on "America's Top 10" in 1990 when it was #1 on what was then called the Black Singles Chart. On AT40, Shadoe mentioned it as such but I don't think any part of it was ever played, at least not until Tevin had his own top 40 hits.

I think Tracy Spencer was that way as well with, "Symptoms of True Love".

Here's one that I think meets your original criteria. When Michael Jackson was charting in 1984 with "Thriller," there was a week when Casey played a bit of Eddie Murphy's impression of him taken from his concert film singing "She's Out Of My Life." (Tito, get me some tissues.) In 1985, Eddie Murphy would hit the Top 40 with "Party All The Time."

And this just barely counts, but Casey played a snippet of "Do They Know It's Christmas" a couple weeks before it debuted in the Top 40 when telling a story about the record's creation, so technically Band Aid would also qualify.

Genesis's first top 40 was "Follow You Follow Me" in 1978 after Gabriel left. Yes, but I'm talking about playing a song or a portion of a song as an extra or during a story (similar to what woolebull said about Falco and "Der Kommissar").

In the first year of AT40, they included "plug spots" for new releases on the MGM label. (Apparently, they had a very good relationship with label president Mike Curb.) Through this arrangement, the show played snippets of future top 40 hits "One Bad Apple" by the Osmonds and "Burning Bridges" by the Mike Curb Congregation two months before they charted.
They also played a snippet of a Bill Medley single that flopped. Although he would chart again as a member of the Righteous Brothers in 1974, his name wouldn't be credited on a top 40 hit until 1987 on the duet "I've Had The Time of My Life."

I'm sure there were a few instances like this, but in one of the first AT40 shows, Casey played "Travelin' Man" by Ricky Nelson. Of course he was an established artist and had had many Top 40 hits before AT40 came along. But he wouldn't chart on AT40 until "Garden Party" in 1972.

All are good answers. I think that's cool that Eddie Murphy is a part of this select group! I bet no one thought back in 1984, "This guy will have a Top 3 hit in less than two years"!
