Hey, renfield. You'll find the folks over here a little less... emotional... I'd love to start a thread retroactively predicting which songs would have been #1 if the 1980s had used Soundscan and BDS. pointpark, Hot 100 policy in the 80's was that a song moving to #1 could not be bullet-less. On the occasion that a song without a bullet at #2 reached #1, it would be awarded an honorary bullet. (Off hand, I only recall Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" being in that position) Add, "Seasons Change" to that list...I mentioned it above. Did "I'll Be Your Everything" or "One More Try" (Timmy T version) have a bullet the week before either of those songs hit position 1? Those seem like good candidates to not have a bullet. Timmy T did something I bet hasn't been done much, if at all: Spent 3 weeks at 3, then 2 weeks at 2, and then 1 week at 1. Pretty crazy. I'd personally love to see that retro Soundscan list, even through 1991. It would be interesting, to say the least!

Tommy Page had a bullet the week before.
Timmy T did not - Great memory! I recall being VERY surprised when he, not the surging Gloria Estefan - got #1 on March 23, 1991.
Still, a very rare feat. Until 1991 - after which - all bets were off!

It would be interesting to see what the 1989 Hot 100 would have looked like if Soundscan/BDS had happened a few years earlier. I imagine the majority of that year's bumper crop of chart-toppers would have lost their number one distinction. We would have had "Me So Horny" at #1 for a couple of months.

Until 1991 - after which - all bets were off! That's crazy! I had no clue that it didn't have a bullet, I just knew that it was spending its fifth week at either 3 or 2 so I figured it would be a good candidate for it...I'm with you, that song going to number one was the most surprising to me of any song hitting number one since I had started listening back in 1982. How did that song, without a bullet, hold off "Coming Out Of The Dark"?!? That time between "Someday" at one and "Rush Rush" at one is a potpourri of songs, many that shocked me going to the top.. "Joyride", "I Like The Way", etc...I'm not complaining at all, it just seems that there were quite a few songs that hit the top that just don't seem were that big of a deal. I think if Soundscan was in use, many of those songs would have never seen number one. I'm pretty sure "Someday" would have been number one for like 9 weeks or so.

... and I'm pretty sure Deon Estus wouldn't have hit the top 5 (or even 10!)

The same week, Sheena Easton pulled off a rare chart feat. "The Lover in Me" spent its first and last week in the bottom 2 of the Hot 100 and reached the Top 2. No song I know of debuted @ #100, hit #1 & spent its final week of the run @ #100.

Edit: Does anybody know/remember if unbulleted songs hit number one? I know that "The Living Years" by Mike + the Mechanics as well as "Seasons Change" by Expose ended long climbs by hitting the top for one week, then had precipitous plunges down the chart. Were either or both of those unbulleted when they reached the summit? This happened all the time in the 70s. From 1974 alone: The Joker Show And Tell The Way We Were Seasons In The Sun Dark Lady Sunshine On My Shoulders Hooked On A Feeling Bennie & The Jets The Streak Band On The Run Sundown Annie's Song Feel Like Makin' Love The Night Chicago Died (You're) Having My Baby I Shot The Sheriff Rock Me Gently I Honestly Love You Nothing From Nothing Then Came You You Haven't Done Nothin' You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet Whatever Gets You Thru The Night
