And "Rock Me Amadeus". It mentioned the singer's name during the tail end of the timeline segment in the US version. "In 1985, Austrian rock singer Falco records...", you know the rest.

Also, Ashanti's "Foolish" mentions Ashanti near the beginning of the song.
Ciara is also mentioned in Ciara's "LoveSexMagic" - a duet with Justin Timberlake. It was popular in the spring of 2009 - I am not sure how it did on Ryan's AT40.
A subtle reference to Backstreet Boys was mentioned in the title to "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" - it debuted on the week that AT40 *returned* to radio in 1998.

Name-dropping is popular in this era...even the names of labels show up...like "Dark Child" on some song in the early 2000s. But my contribution is the pre-AT40 "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave where Sam says, "Play it, Steve." He's talking to Steve Cropper, a house musician (guitarist, and also a member of Booker T. & The M.G.'s and the Mar-Keys at the time). Practically the same musicians were on the Blues Brothers remake in 1978 (AT40 hey-day), and this time Belushi belts out, "Play it, Steve"---again to Cropper, just ahead of his updated guitar solo.

In "Maria Maria", the featured Product G&B sing about the sounds of the guitar played by (the main artist) Carlos Santana.
"Take Me Home Tonight", in which Eddie Money sang just like Ronnie (Spector) (featured on vocals): Be my (little) baby.
Also unlike some European countries where the single was credited to Starsound, in North America "Stars on 45" was credited to "Stars on 45" so I include them here as well.

jthorpe: Yes, I remember now---the extra shout-out at the end. That whole project created a comeback and a new audience for Cropper/Dunn. Many young fans had no clue of the legacy of those two w/respect to R&B in the Stax/Volt/Atlantic era.

"Love Overboard" by Gladys Knight, which hit #13 in March 1988, has her opening with the lyric "They tell me, Gladys, you know you love too hard But I tell 'em, not nearly hard enough"
