How about Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" ("...and the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night)?

Two songs that were not technically AT40, but have notable name checks:
"Aquarius" by the Fifth Dimension -- toward the end, they want you to "sing along with the Fifth Dimension". "LA Woman" by the Doors -- Mr Mojo Risin= Jim Morrison (unscrambled)

How about The South's Gonna Do It (Again) by The Charlie Daniels Band? The line in the song "And all the good people down in Tennessee are diggin' Barefoot Jerry and C.D.B" C.D.B. of course being The Charlie Daniels Band.

Jason Derulo shouts his own name at the beginning of most of his early top 40 hits (I guess he thinks his name is well-known enough now that he doesn't have to do that anymore).
"OPP" included the line "Not 'cause I hate ya, 'cause I'm Naughty By Nature"
"Calling Dr. Love" has the lyric "The first step of the cure is…a KISS"

The song makes references to both the group T. Rex, and the group's own 1971 album Who's Next, with the line: "I drunk myself blind to the sound of old T. Rex... and Who's Next".

Also, rayshae3 mentioned "Talk Talk" by Talk Talk, and "Wham Rap". Two songs that IIRC were known at the time, but didn't reach the 40 (I don't believe that "Wham Rap" was released as a single, correct?).

IIRC, Natural Selection is from Minneapolis. That means you are probably quite familiar with them huh!

But in the rest of the world the parenthesized title was the other way around: "Wham Rap (Enjoy What You Do)"
