This blows my mind. For almost 50 years until about three minutes ago I thought this was an African-American group. www.youtube.com/watch?v=raJWuz7qQVcAnyway...when has this happened to you, either this way or the other way around?

Looking Glass, who did "Brandy." For the longest time, I had always assumed that they were a black group, or at least the lead singer was black.

Looking Glass, who did "Brandy." For the longest time, I had always assumed that they were a black group, or at least the lead singer was black. Another one I just thought of was the Soul Survivors. That was a soulful lead singer. But Expressway To Your Heart has more of a rock/soul sound than the one I linked to - kind of a Rascals sound. Though that didn't stop me from thinking that the Soul Survivors were African-American for decades. But this one. Wow. I am still shaking my head in disbelief. That is one soulful white man. For some reason I thought for a long time that the lead singers of Looking Glass and King Harvest might be the same guy. I only found out about 15 years ago that Sonny Geraci sang both Time Won't Let Me and Precious And Few. I couldn't believe it.

Until I saw a picture of them in a teen magazine, I thought Ace of Base were black.

Until I saw a picture of them in a teen magazine, I thought Ace of Base were black. Same here. Also, for years I thought the lead singer of the Stylistics was a woman and didn't realize it was a guy singing falsetto.

For some reason, the first time I heard "Unwritten", thought it was a black singer. Found out later it was Natasha Bedingfield.

My mother saw BeeGees on daytime TV (Mike Douglas I think) or so she thought. When she told me the makeup of the group, I ran it by my friends who knew more about the brothers than I did at the time. They laughed. As it turns out I think the group she actually saw was Tavares. Oops! There's an excuse for that: they performed the same tune in Saturday Night Fever. dL

I thought Jackie Blue was sung by a woman when I was a kid. Sorry, Larry Lee.

I thought Jackie Blue was sung by a woman when I was a kid. Sorry, Larry Lee. Same here. Also, before I knew the name of the singer, "Hot Child In The City" (which made the lyrics that much racier).

I thought Jackie Blue was sung by a woman when I was a kid. Sorry, Larry Lee. I thought Jackie Blue was sung by a woman until I read your post. I don't know anything about that group (obviously).

When Rock Your Baby by George McCrae came out in 1974 I was 11 and I thought it was sung by a woman until I found out that the singer was named George! I also thought that the song was about an infant www.youtube.com/watch?v=arxhW1RgDDo

I couldn't tell if the singer in the Summer 1982 club hit "Situation" (Yaz / Yazoo) was a guy or a girl. The packaging for the vinyl didn't help.

Relatives of mine thought Taylor Dayne was black when I'll Always Love You came out.
