Rick Dees WT40 July 20, 1991. Rick just said that 17 million units of music (cds/cassettes/etc) are sold each week. It's so much lower now. #1 can sell 10,000 or less!

Going back 40 years to when video killed the radio star, AT40 from 8-1-81. Nowadays, reality killed the video star, a very sad decline of the network that defined the 80's decade.

Going back 33 years to Casey's finale of the original AT40-8-6-88. AT40 would never be quite the same for better or worse.

And a visual rendering of the Weekly Top 40 Challenge from that week: No, seriously. It was a mystery voice from motion pictures this week, and the clip: "Molly...you in danger, girl." Because that clip has been so endlessly GIF-ed, it made for maybe the easiest WT40 challenge I've yet heard. (In contrast, when he called the challenge winner to identify a clip of Paula Abdul, I didn't recognize her voice. ) Also, the medley he played to set up "Walking in Memphis" at #21 felt rather long, since it included parts of so many songs. Rick also played what turns out to be the DNA remix of "Lily Was Here": www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3ez5y1wcOcReception's listing is also missing an extra: #1 three years ago this week, "Pour Some Sugar on Me" (played after #6).

AMC 1984, "Part 4". Currently in the week of 8/25, with "Hard Habit To Break" by Chicago leading things off. Gotta work later today so I'll miss the ACC airing tonight.

AT40 from 35 years ago today, which is this weekend's 80s offering. Love the hits of summer 1986.

A couple of 8/28 shows today...already near the end of Hour 2 in 1971, and 1999 is on deck. Maybe I can fit in 1976 afterward.

Casey's Top 40 from 9/2/1989 (Labor Day weekend that year).
ETA: Love "Forget Me Not" by Bad English...very underrated song! It's #37 in this show.

I was is the mood for it when I surprisingly found a vinyl copy of Bad English's debut album at a Half Price Books Store. I know that 1989 gets a lot of flack for Milli Vanilli and NKOTB, but arguably the worst song in the countdown was Eddie Murphy's "Put Your Mouth On Me". Other than that, lots of great songs on there.

I might pop in 1990 after this one - I'll have to see how much time I have after 1989 is finished.

I completely agree. 1988-1990 get a bad rap, but those were the years my pop music/top 40 countdown obsession was at its highest, and I have very fond memories of that music (most of it, anyway!).

Catching AT40 from 9/28/1985 before I head in to work. Been on a little 1985 kick lately, partially fueled by AMC. Super great year for music, and the first full year I heard AT40.

In a Shadoe mood right now so taking it back 33 years with AT40 from October 8, 1988.
He mentioned that Huey Lewis & the News weren't bothered if "Small World" wasn't as successful as their previous albums, as they were having fun playing the songs from it anyway. Turns out, after their then-current "Perfect World", only one more single from it would reach the top 40 anyway.
