I have been listening to these shows chronologically and think this is rather fascinating. We know how slow the AC chart moved. When a song got to #1 it was usually there for weeks, sometimes several months. Well, then there's this. While I wouldn't put this into the category of making the chart or show exciting, it has been pretty comical knowing how slow the chart was to listen to this happening. Here's the top 4 of every week so far in 2004 I've heard. Pay special attention to a couple of songs on these charts....
The last top 3 of 2003: 3. “Drift Away” by Uncle Kracker & Dobie Gray 2. “Forever and For Always” by Shania Twain 1. “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty (been #1 for 5 non-consecutive weeks)
1/3/04
4. “Drift Away” by Uncle Cracker & Dobie Gray 3. “Calling All Angels” by Train 2. “Forever and For Always” by Shania Twain 1. “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty (6 non-consecutive weeks at #1)
1/10/04
4. “Forever and For Always” by Shania Twain 3. “Drift Away” by Uncle Kracker & Dobie Gray 2. “Calling All Angels” by Train 1. “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty (7 non-consecutive weeks at #1)
1/17/04
4. “Calling All Angels” by Train 3. “Drift Away” by Uncle Kracker & Dobie Gray 2. “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty 1. “Forever and For Always” by Shania Twain (3rd week at #1)
1/24/04
4. “Calling All Angels” by Train 3. “Forever and For Always” by Shania Twain 2. “Drift Away” by Uncle Kracker & Dobie Gray 1. “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty (8th non-consecutive weeks at #1)
1/31/04
4. “Calling All Angels” by Train 3. “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty 2. “Drift Away” by Uncle Kracker & Dobie Gray 1. “Forever and For Always” by Shania Twain (4th non-consecutive week at 1)

Sort of off-topic, but as long as we're talking about slow moving charts, here is possibly the ultimate; the Top Five back in 2001. From June 15 through October 26, the Top Five contained nothing but the following songs:
I Hope You Dance - Lee Ann Womack If You're Gone - Matchbox Twenty Thank You - Dido Only Time - Enya There You'll Be - Faith Hill
I kid you not; for a period of four and a half months, starting in mid-June, when "Only Time" moved into the Top Five, pushing out "Angel" by Lionel Richie, these five songs waged a game of musical chairs in the Top Five and it wasn't until November 2 when there was finally a new entry in the Top Five, "All Or Nothing", which overtook the Faith Hill song. Not sure if this has happened since, seeing that I don't follow the AC chart as closely as I used to (since there's no longer any countdowns using it), but this one definitely got my attention.

Yeah I don't know if the ones in later years moved that slow or not. I know 04/05 was awful in terms of #1s. Heaven was #1 for 22 weeks. Not sure how long "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson was which is the song that followed it.

All these long runs at #1 has had me wondering if there will be a time where Casey runs out of stories to tell before the #1 song. I have never heard a show he did from 1989 or later when he did not......until now. On the 2/16/08 AT20, he did not tell a story before the #1 song, "Bubbly" by Colbie Caillat. Possible reason: this was its 16th week at #1. All he could say was that it tied a record by Avril Lavigne!

Are you speaking of only the AC Charts (AT20) or AT40 as well? In any case, I think the use of Mediabase and R&R charts were a part of the stagnancy problem during this period. Check the Billboard Hot 100 during mid late 2001 and you won't see this. A good reason AT40 should have came back to using Billboard.

Realistically though, do you really believe any mainstream terrestrial radio station would have aired a countdown directly based on the top 40 of the Hot 100 post-1991? There wouldn't be enough affiliates to make the show profitable.

However, with Shania Twain and Faith Hill popular in this period, I suppose Country was having a bit of a revival on the pop charts. So, yeah I don't know what station wouldn't have played most of these songs. In fact, most of them were on the R&R chart that AT40 was using at the time. www.umdmusic.com/default.asp?Lang=English&Chart=D&ChDay=15&ChMonth=6&ChYear=2001&ChBand=&ChSong=

If that's so, then considering the long stretches of time some artists spent at #1 even on CHR he must have repeated a lot of the same stories. There were only so many authorized stories one could tell about Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, or artists such as Ace of Base, Natalie Imbruglia and Donna Lewis whose first or second hits became long running #1's.

There is so much more to this than just "oh they played most of this." First off, most is NOT all. And when there are songs that aren't airing on pop radio routinely hitting the countdown the show has a big problem. Second, you listed the top 10, not top 40 which is what American Top 40 counted down. If I go look at the top 40 am I going to see the other 30 being mainstream radio friendly?! Highly doubtful. Third, was this top 10 a reflection of what the stations airing AT40 were playing in regular rotation at the time? Meaning if the average listener heard the show is this believable based on what they heard on the radio station? Fourth, media base/R&R - free Billboard - $10K a week + all the aforementioned headaches. For whatever reason you love the hot 100 (that's fine) and think that should air, would work, and seem to want us to agree. We aren't because we know it wouldn't. AT40 ceased in 1995. It's been 19 years and other than a couple of internet only shows, the hot 100 has never been used since. Yes I know it's been over 22 since the Hot 100 was used but I'm saying 19 because no one could use it even if they wanted to when AT40 under ABC was still in existence. Anyway, there's a reason no one has done it on a national radio scale. It would fail and do so miserably. Btw, country wasn't experiencing any revival. Once soundscan came around country music was routinely hitting the hot 100 so that was incorrect entirely. And not for nothing, this is about the AC chart. Not pop chart. That's why my original posting is in the AT20/AT10 AC area and not original AT40 or AT40 w/Ryan Seacrest section and AC chart is in the title of this thread I made. Why would I come here and start a thread about the pop chart?

Why would I come here and start a thread about the pop chart? Sorry to get your panties in a wad. I don't quite understand your hostility at discussion. I don't expect anyone to "agree" with me. In my opinion (maybe lone opinion) I feel it ridiculous that songs were not moving on AT20 and pointing out a BB's chart did not have this problem. I didn't list the entire 40 for space considerations and I posted a link if anyone wanted to see it. I've read Rob Durkees book so I know the problems with the Hot 100 when AT40 was taken off the air the first time. At that time (1991-1995) there were significant differences in the Hot 100 and R&R's chart. I don't blame Casey's Top 40 for changing when it did. However, my whole point is that after 1998, the differences in R&R and Billboards charts were minimal. I am not a "lover" per say of the Hot 100, I only wish AT40 would have used it for the topic of this thread which was pointing out that the same songs were in the top 5 for ages, making the show sound stale, let alone the historical and continuity reasons.

This is an AC chart discussion. The BB AC chart was moving just as slow.

Looks like everything has settled into its molasses state.
2/21/04:
5. Draft Away 4. The First Cut is the Deepest 3. Unwell 2. Calling All Angels 1. Forever and For Always
Thank goodness this is about to become a top 10 show with a whole lot of extras filling time. I've only been regularly listening to these shows on a weekly basis since the start of the year and it's worn out its welcome. Hot AC isn't all that much better but the music is peppier so it's not as drab.
