Anyone know why Brandy's Have You Ever was always edited the way it was? Or why Garbage's Stupid Girl always had verse 2 cut out during it's top 40 run? I took a quick listen to the chart run of "Stupid Girl", which debuted on the 7/27/1996 CT40 show. It was actually played intact on the 8/3, 8/17*, 9/28* and 10/5 shows (* - guest-hosted by David Perry). I think some songs are much easier to edit, and it was an easy target, much like "Eyes Without A Face" was for Premiere in the 1984 shows. And for those of us that have the AT40 2.0 shows in our collection, we hear the opposite scenario - many of the second verses, etc. that were cut in prior eras, are repeated. There was one show where I think the second verse of Vonda Shepard's "Searchin' My Soul" was repeated TWICE. (Might have been an AT20 show.) Once Casey moved to AM/FM from Westwood One, the structure of the countdown changed some. Every hour began with #40, #30, #20, and #10. And the producers did whatever they could to keep each hour timed that way. On the original AT40 shows (save for the immediate few weeks after the 4-hour expansion in October 1978), there really wasn't that structure in terms of what number led off a subsequent hour. Many 4-hour shows led off with #31 or #29 in hour 2, or #11 or #9 to kick off hour 4. Many CT40 shows I've heard usually start hour 2 with #31. I'm not sure how else to explain it. Some songs are just easier targets for editing. Hmmm, makes sense. I'll have to listen back to one of those shows with Stupid Girl to see if I have them. I just remembered that as a song that always had the second verse cut. There was a show, I want to say it was an early 2003 show(?) where the song at #39 had a verse repeated twice, so played 3 times. I might need to dig into this to see which show and song it was but I thought it was overall, but also particularly odd because it was a hip-hop song. I'll check into this and report back.

I might have mentioned this earlier in this thread, but I don't really feel like scanning through 61 pages, but on this week's 1983 "B" show, there was a very sloppy edit in "Never Gonna Let You Go" by Sergio Mendes. They mashed up the second and final chorus, neither of which were in the same key. Even to people unfamiliar with the song, it might have sounded weird. I remember that edit too, which I also found in my original copy. Imagine what it would sound like if the second chorus was left, and goes straight to the ending - it would sound just as strange. This would be one of the more difficult songs to edit, unless the edit is made somewhere in the first chorus. Exactly - the first chorus and the second chorus are both in the same key, so mashing them together would work without it sounding weird. That's how they usually do edits anyway, by cutting out the second verse. That way, they would leave in the instrumental bridge, which is by far my favorite part of the song - great synth work!

On AT40: The 80's 8/2/1986: Must Premiere always omit the second verse/chorus of "The Edge of Heaven" by Wham! even if it was played in full in the original ABC/Watermark broadcast?
Also on AT40: The 80's 8/2/1986: The second chorus and bridge towards last chorus of "Hanging on a Heart Attack" by Device was omitted - Premiere edit, I guess.

On AT40: The 80's 9/8/1984 broadcast: * "I Can Dream About You" by Dan Hartman had its second verse and chorus edited out. * "Dynamite" by Jermaine Jackson also had its second verse and chorus edited out. ...are these original Watermark edits or Premiere hatchet job edits?

They probably were both Premiere edits. Why are you even asking this? It should be common knowledge at this point that they edit some songs to make room for commercials.

I wonder if "The B- is Back" by Elton John on AT40: The 70's 9/21/1974 was shortened by Watermark since the second verse and chorus is missing in this debut AT40 9/21/1974 playing.
Also shortened on AT40: The 70's 9/21/1974: "Steppin' Out - Gonna Boogie Tonight" by Tony Orlando and Dawn (No final verse and chorus) "You Little Trustmaker" by the Tymes (Part of the last chorus omitted) ...all original Watermark edits or Premiere hatchet edits?

You are correct...both Premiere edits. I listened to my originals, and both mentioned song verses that were omitted in the Premiere airings were present in the originals. A good chunk of edits noted on these threads are likely by Premiere. I've also seen (not always heard) re-arranging of features in the shows, like LDDs, etc. Some of it just doesn't make any sense...
