Not sure if this has been mentioned, but when Belinda Carlisle released her third album she had almost enough momentum to get a top ten hit. Within six months, her top 40 career was over.

Newton exploded with 7 top 40s in only 2 1/2 years. But that Juice got stale fast as her chart fortunes would dwindle quickly after those.

Richard Marx exploded with something like 14 very quick top 40s but would never make the top 40 again after that.

A couple acts that roughly first charted at the same time, both had 4 very quick top 40s, and then rapidly vanished concurrently...Asia and Stray Cats. Huge Asia fan here. Around the time their 2nd album came out, they had some MAJOR internal strife. That, coupled with Geffen Records being helicopter parents, meant they didn't do a 3rd album until two years later. By then, the momentum was gone, the album underperformed, and they broke up. The original lineup reunited in the mid-2000s and did three more albums before John Wetton died of cancer in 2017.

It's been years since I read it, but in her book she said that her label (MCA) was no longer interested in promoting her once that album came out.

Both Irene Cara and Michael McDonald hit the top ten with their final entries, then vanished. Michael would resurface on the AC chart in the 1990s but I don't know if Irene ever put out any more records.

Michael would resurface on the AC chart in the 1990s but I don't know if Irene ever put out any more records. Irene Cara is a good example -- chart run from 1980 ("Fame") to 1984 ("Breakdance"), most of which were top 10's including her monster hit from Flashdance. "Breakdance" hit the top 10, but that would be it for Irene. Stray Cats were mentioned above -- another act that put out a few big hits and the vanished as quickly as they arrived. Nobody seems to epitomize this category more than Men At Work...

Nobody seems to epitomize this category more than Men At Work... After I got Spotify and was able to access it easily, I listened to Men At Work's third album which had some very good songs on it. I remember reading someone in the industry saying that they picked the wrong first single.

Except for a minor mid 70s lull, it looked like ONJ was unstoppable. She was able to reinvent herself from country folk to disco to MTV pop depending on the trend of the moment. But after one final Soul Kiss in 1985, it would come to an abrupt end as Livvy would never come close to top 40 again, even with The Rumor of Elt helping out.

After the biggest selling LP, ever, he was In You. Then Peter Frampton was nowhere.

I remember reading someone in the industry saying that they picked the wrong first single. "Man With Two Hearts," the leadoff track, wasn't a single but should've been. It's one of the best songs they ever did.

After Stinger turned in his badge he had a Dream about a big solo career and his debut delivered. And he kept it going at a good clip until the 21st Century began when the former driver of the Police car ran outta gas.
