To piggyback off of the 70's thread, what 80's songs did you like back in the day and now cannot stand, and vice versa.
The biggest one for me is Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love For You". Back in 1985, I couldn't stand the song. Now, I could listen to that song over and over and over again. I think the music is just amazing. Thoughts of a smokey lounge room come to mind every time I hear this song. Of course, that is also the difference of being twelve and being in your thirties.
Dead or Alive's, "Brand New Lover" is another song I didn't care for back in the day but now love.
On the flip side, "Eye of the Tiger", which I loved at 9, I can do without now. Still a good song, but I don't ever have to hear it again.

As I posted in the 70s thread, I've done a 180 on Young MC's Bust a Move; I liked the song in 1989 but now I can't stand it thanks to one of my local stations overplaying it during their Time Warp Weekend.
The only "hated it then, love it now" song I can think of is Guns n' Roses' Patience. I didn't care for it back when it was a hit (especially the whistling parts), but I like it now.

A lot of the power ballads, ie Never Surrender, Groovy Kinda Love, Foolish Beat haven't aged very well in my ears. I understand that. In fact, Debbie Gibson hasn't aged well with me. I loved her in 1987/88. I mean loved her. Of course I was 14. Now, not so much, particularly "Lost In Your Eyes". On the flip side, however, the song "More Than You Know" by Martika I still love as much as I did back in 1989. So it's not just a "school boy crush/gotten older" kind of thing with me. Funny how some tastes change while others stay the same.

In 1982, "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago was my favorite song in the world. But then, with its overplay on oldies and AC stations, as well as the overplay of the Az Yet version, which sounds much like the original, I actually change the radio station when that song comes on.

Did you like the Az Yet version at the time? I was a big fan of the original, but I did like their version of it, even if it was similar. There is something about the 1982 songs, save "Eye Of The Tiger" that I've never wavered on. I really, really liked the songs then or I really, really did not. My first AT 40 was July 4, 1982 so that probably has something to do with it. Like, I really should be over "Rosanna" by now...and I still love it.

"Paradise City" I like more now than back in the day. I just thought it would be one of those rock anthems that would never go away. It of course didn't, but I've learned to appreciate it more now. And you are spot on about "Bust A Move". It just sounds so weak now.

Yeah, I liked Az Yet's version when I first heard it, but the stations I listened to all but played it ad nauseum and I eventually got tired of it, and because the two songs sound very much alike, the original went down along with it.

Actually, I take back what I said about 1982 songs. There are some 180's I have with some of them.
One of those is, "Gloria" by Laura Branigan. Loved it big time back in the day. Now, it's ok, but definitely overplayed.
However, on the flip side, "Self Control" by Laura Branigan is a song that I didn't like at all when it came out. Now...totally love it.

In '81 I did not care for "Just the Two of Us" at all. Relistening to it recently I'm amazed that it is actually a good song--decent lyrics, good production, and Bill Withers' understated vocal is perfect for the tune.

I just thought of something I did back in reference to the July 1, 1989 show. I remembered I had a copy of the Hot 100 hanging in my room growing up, and loved it because I absolutely loved 38 of the Top 40 songs that week, and hated 2 of them.
So, today I looked back at that chart and came to this conclusion, 24 years later:
The two songs I hated: "Good Thing" and "Rooms On Fire": still cannot stand.
Of the other songs, I now can't stand, "Toy Soldiers", "Express Yourself", "Wind Beneath My Wings", "Forever Your Girl", and "Crazy About Her".
So 33 of the 38 still stand the test of time!

In 1984 I loved "They Don't Know" by (singer/actress) Tracey Ullman; so much so that I rated it my favorite song of the year at the time. Now it does nothing for me; probably my favorite from that year currently is "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins.

When they were new, I disliked Earth Wind & Fire's "Let's Groove" and Stevie Wonder's "That Girl." But now, I think they're two of the best songs that the early '80s produced!

I used to really not like "Stray Cat Strut." But now that I've been listening chronologically to shows each week since November of last year (started with Nov 1982) and have followed its entire chart run I've grown to like it now.

"Solid" by Ashford & Simpson "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" by Cyndi Lauper "Love Will Conquer All" by Lionel Richie
"Solid" was a good song when it was actively on the top 40 in 1985, but now, to me, there seems to be some sort of "emotional reminder" attached to the song to me that causes the song to get stuck in my head for two or three days. The "stuck in my head" feeling was prevalent since I heard it on Kid Kelly's BackTrax USA in 1998. I have tuned out that song completely before the end of 2000, and have no desire to hear it again to this day.
That song did play at two clubs I went to in Second Life since January, and on those occasions (and still to this day) when I heard Valerie Simpson start the song a capella, I would immediately shut off the audio and simply wait for the next song.
I liked "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" for a very short period in July 1985, but by August 1985 I have since hated the song.
"Love Will Conquer All" was a good song when it was on the chart prior to Christmas 1986, but not too long after that, I don't care for the song much.
One song I did a 180 on, but then do another 180 last year:
"Sweet Love" by Anita Baker.
I had no problem with the song in 1986 and even 1987, but I have tuned out the song before Christmas 1987, and my taste for that song rebounded for the better around 2011.
