I learned that some songs played on AT40 during the 70s and 80s are not acceptable for airing in some places because of lines or references within those lyrics that are deemed controversial or questionable in nature and are not deemed PG-friendly.
Some examples include:
"I Want Your Sex" by George Michael. Radio stations banned such song, and if any did play it, it wouldn't be until after around 9 P.M. Suggestive lyrics that may spark controversy is likely the cause for such ban.
"Rich Girl" by Hall & Oates. Banned in some outlets because of the B word.
"White Horse" by Laid Back. Again, banned for usage of the B word.
"The B***h Is Back" by Elton John. The title speaks for itself.
"Rock You Like A Hurricane" by Scorpions. Contains the B word, and was edited out when Premiere aired the May 19, 1984 episode last year.
"I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene. Contains an inappropriate word starting with W.
"Double Dutch Bus" by Frankie Smith. Contains a word that could be perceived as an inappropriate reference to a prostitute. Such word is used 3 times in Santa Claus's traditional laugh, though in that case it would be acceptable.
"Rumors" by Timex Social Club. Contains a reference to a homosexual when referring to a guy named "Michael" in the lyrics. Then again, material by a certain Motown legend named Marvin is acceptable, especially when there's an "e" added to it.
"Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits. The album version contains a bad word that refers to a homosexual. That version was banned in Canada in January 2011. I am pretty sure the version heard on AT40 was pretty clean, though.
"Me So Horny" by 2 Live Crew. This was one rap song that would change the shape of rap music to this day. There were some swear words in the lyrics, and Shadoe had no desire to mention the song title except for when it first hit the top 40, and when enough time had passed that such song was off the top 40. Same reason as to why neither Casey nor Charlie Van Dyke would never mention "I Want Your Sex" while it was on AT40 after mid-July 1987.
"Heart of Glass" by Blondie. The version heard on AT40 was most likely clean, but the album and music video version mentioned "pain in the ***" towards the end of the song.
Any other examples you can think of?
