Might not be as foreign as you think. I still see coin op games like that in various locations. Especially the Ms PAC Man/Galaga combo one. Are they still a quarter for a single game? Like payphones, the last I knew a typical video game was running anywhere from 2 to 4 quarters per play, even for 'retro' games.

Come Dancing, which should be representative of this topic, had Big Bands (I think kids might not know what those were, and I wouldn't either but my parents liked all of that.) What was that place where his sister used to go to dance? The Palais (pronounced Pah-lay). "Come Dancing" still has one of the best videos of all time. Thank you, Ray Davies!

Oran Juice Jones "The Rain" 1986: Several references 1) my first impulse was to run up on you And do a Rambo (most today wouldn't know who Rambo is) - 2) Silly rabbit, tricks are made for kids (referring to Trix - the cereal commercials with the rabbit) and my favorite line 3)" get on outta here with that alley-cat-coat-wearing, punch-bucket-shoe-wearing crumbcake I saw you with (not sure I even knew what that was when the song came out ) lol

If a kid heard "Russians" today, they would probably wonder two things: 1) Shouldn't this be about another country/organization and 2) When did the old washed up pro wrestler have a Top 40 song?

"America needs you, Harry Truman. Harry, won't you please come home?" Harry Truman -- who's that? If we're dealing with historical references, most of the song "We Didn't Start The Fire" would be unrecognizable. So true. Even the 80's references: Bernie Goetz, the "Cola" Wars, hypodermics on the shore...

Oran Juice Jones "The Rain" 1986: Several references 1) my first impulse was to run up on you And do a Rambo (most today wouldn't know who Rambo is) - Yep, even if it was updated to "...run up on you and do an O.J.", the younger folks still wouldn't understand the reference. ;D

Off record: that song was all time classic. My man had the line, "I gave you things you couldn't even pronounce". Epic.

On the flip side, if someone heard, "I Believe In You" by Don Williams, there would be many people who would say, "Man...this guy has done an amazing job describing the world in 2012"!

Furthermore, where I live, and in many other places, a phone call now requires ten digits, not seven (also noted in the Four Tops song mentioned above, and, for that matter, the 2 Live Crew's "Me So Horny", from 1989.) Or what about songs with references to older phone numbers like "Beechwood 4-5789"? Don't know if it hit the top 40 or not. There's also Pennsylvania 6-5000.

LFO's hit "Summergirls" has many outdated references...Macauly Kaukin, Alex P. Keaton, Willie Whistle (I think that was a Boston thing), New Edition and Mr. Limpet. In fact, most of those were outdated when the song came out in 1999.

[quote If we're dealing with historical references, most of the song "We Didn't Start The Fire" would be unrecognizable. But that was the point of the song even in 1989, to look up all of the references.
