"5-7-0-5" by City Boy. Why such a short phone number? Maybe that's what they were like in the U.K. back in the 1970s.

"5-7-0-5" by City Boy. Why such a short phone number? Maybe that's what they were like in the U.K. back in the 1970s. Depended on the size of the local exchange. If dialing within one's local area, four digits were often all that were needed. Even fewer in exchange areas with small numbers of telephone customers. Changed in the early 1980s with the transition from Post Office Telecommunications to British Telecom (BT). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_telephone_numbers_in_the_United_Kingdom

Yeah, but proportionately speaking, 40 cents was well below the minimum wage.

Yeah, but proportionately speaking, 40 cents was well below the minimum wage. Well, for all we know Mr. Stewart probably wrote the song in '78 (min. wage $2.65/hr) or even '77 ($2.30/hr). He had not released an LP prior to 'Bombs Away Dream Babies' since that year ('Fire In the Wind'). And BTW, Vegaskid got the line slightly off: It's "...two fifty-four an hour..." rather than "...two fifty for an hour...". Hey, those four extra cents per hour add up! That extra buck-fifty a week would buy one several cans of cheap late '70s beer--like Billy beer.

I hesitate to mention another telephone song, but I thought this was a great example that hasn't been mentioned. In Sheena Easton's "Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)" she says, "I call you on the telephone, but you're never home." A kid hearing that today would say, "Why does it matter if they are at home? You take your phone with you!"

Tina Turner's "Private Dancer" mentions Deutsche marks. Those are no longer legal tender as Germany now uses the euro.
Billy Joel's "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me" mentions flying Continental. They no longer exist, having been merged into United.
Huey Lewis & the News's "Stuck With You" mentions having the same phone number. Given everyone has their own cell phone these days, it's not likely to happen as everyone just keeps their own number.

Billy Joel's "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me" mentions flying Continental. They no longer exist, having been merged into United. BJ's Continental reference refers to the Lincoln automobile, not the airline: "...your best bet's a true baby-blue Continental", in the verse that starts out "What's the matter with the car I'm driving...". Although, coincidentally, on the cover of his 1976 LP "Turnstiles", there is a guy holding a Continental Airlines flight bag!

Technology is moving so quickly that even more recent songs have outdated references. In Lil Troy's "Wanna Be A Baller" from 1999 he says he "Switched from Motorola to a PrimeCo phone". PrimeCo has been out of business pretty much since that song was on the charts.
Another one that comes to mind is the 2008 hit by Ashanti "The Way That I Love You", in which she sings about her boyfriend leaving his "Sidekick on the nightstand." I bet a lot of people don't even remember that a Sidekick was a type of cell phone.
