The Donna Summer hits were still rising as of the first week of November 1979, however "Heaven Must Have Sent You" peaked at #11 10/13 and 10/20/1979, whereas "Lovin Touchin Squeezin" peaked at #16 on 10/27 and 11/3/1979 and "Pop Muzik" peaked at #1 on 11/3/79. So... was the cut-off between 1979 and 1980 in the end of October 1979? ABout a month earlier than most years, but perhaps to give them some lead-time to tabulate overall end-of-decade rankings? When did "Tusk" peak? I know it was making its crazy jump within the 40 around October 20, 1979. I ask because I remember it was part of the 1980 year end countdown, and if my memory is correct, "Tusk" only spent one week in the Hot 100 in 1980...somewhere like 97 or so on January 5, 1980. Again, could be wrong...

Again, could be wrong... From 11/3 to 11/17/1979 it was sitting at #8, near as I can tell. It had only debuted on 10/6 on the Hot 100. It spent it's last couple of weeks bouncing around the 90's. An odd quick-rise/quick-fall.

"Tusk" spent two weeks in 1980 in the Hot 100: 99 on 1/5 and 97 on 1/12...15 weeks total. That was very odd chart movement. To jump from 40 to 15 on the third week of October and then to bottom out like that...odd stuff indeed.

AT40 used Billboard's year end chart in 1979. The cut off was 10/20/79. AT40 did their own year end chart in 1980. AT40- counted a songs whole chart run in the top 40 and seemed to include songs that were at their peak position on 11/3/79 or later.

"Heartache Tonight" was on the Hot 100 exactly the same weeks as "Tusk" as well, and its run had to be even odder. Number 33 for the year 1980, only spent two weeks in the actual year 1980 on the Hot 100: #34 on 1/5 and #99 on 1/12.

In 1992, "The Letter" by Wayne Newton hit #1 in Cashbox. More than 20 years later, I've still never heard it.

From 2000-14, these are my pics of what will eventually become the most obscure #1s on AT40, because it's hard to say that any #1 song from 2014 is now forgotten:
2000 - Absolutely (Story of a Girl) - Nine Days 2001 - All or Nothing - O-Town 2002 - Sk8er Boi - Avril Lavigne 2003 - Shake Ya Tailfeather - Nelly, P. Diddy & Murphy Lee 2004 - Leave (Get Out) - Jojo 2005 - 1,2 Step - Ciara f/Missy Elliot 2006 - So Sick - Ne-Yo 2007 - Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne 2008 - Take A Bow - Rihanna 2009 - Don't Trust Me - 3Oh!3 2010 - In My Head - Jason Derulo 2011 - I Wanna Go - Britney Spears 2012 - Glad You Came - The Wanted (despite being the #1 song of the year) 2013 - Don't You Worry Child - Swedish House Mafia f/John Martin 2014 - Am I Wrong - Nico & Vinz

Still played in those 90s and Today formats.

With 2015 almost over, I'm gonna say AT40's current #1, "Stitches" by Shawn Mendes.

I've found this Subject interesting because, along with the choices of obscure #1 Songs, the different reasons or situations that seem to surround them:
Songs that discuss an Event that was current at the time, however may not be today as much. Songs that were novelty hits. Songs that may not fit into Genres that are played by radio stations. Songs that are obscure, however the Singer(s) may be very well known.
I cannot make any guesses, yet I was surprised by some of the Songs.
