Honestly though, aren't the way songs are remembered today more important than their chart positions? Burning For You, Goodbye To You, Kids In America, In Your Eyes, I Melt With You, Rappers Delight, Do Ya, Mr. Blue Sky, You Can Call Me Al and Your Move are all considered classics that are still well-known and receive respectable airplay on their respective formats. I know I hear Your Move and Burning For You more on classic rock than many songs that actually went to #1. Proof that chart peaks aren't the end of the story because all of those aforementioned songs still receive healthy airplay. You're right, of course, but I was referring to when those songs first came out. At this late date, it's hard to believe that "Burning For You" barely cracked the Top 40 as a new release!

Great contributions in this thread. I will add a couple of songs that were dance floor faves in the 80's, but they didn't quite reach the Hot 100. Many thanks to Prince.

During the height of my AT40 listening - the early '80s - there were certain songs that I really liked and hoped would go Top 10. Sadly, some of them never even hit the Top 20. And several missed the 40 altogether! They included: SHADDAP YOU FACE, Joe Dolce (#58)* *I have a soft spot for novelty records. What can I say? Good to see another fan of this song, had the 45 around 1980 when I was just a kid, still love it! Have ya ever seen its cool music video on YouTube? here in the Uk it seemed to be number 1 for ages.hated it as a kid,but today it raises a chuckle or two

Great contributions in this thread. I will add a couple of songs that were dance floor faves in the 80's, but they didn't quite reach the Hot 100. Thanks for the reminder! This one has long been a favorite of mine, a 1983 dance-floor filler that only managed #71 on the Hot 100:

Too many songs from 1983 didn't get their proper attention on AT40. Agree with almost every song you listed. You didn't include songs that peaked at #40, but there were a few of those that I can think of as well. 1988 was another year that had so many great songs that either made the Hot 100, but not the 40, or peaked low in the 40. And on the flip side, there were a number of so-so to crappy songs that made it well into the top 10...almost a backwards year to me in that way.

Gang, another classic that gets played on classic hits radio, but, only made #31 for 5 weeks in '82,was, 'You dropped a bomb on me', by the mighty Gap Band. (salute to Don Cornelius, with the 'mighty').

I know peaking at number nine isn't bad, but "It's a Sin" by the Pet Shop Boys is a great tune, deserving of a much higher peak.
It only hit number one in a dozen-or-so European countries. I suppose we were too cool in America back in 1987 for that to hit the top here.
For that matter, "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)" should've been much higher than number 10.
Oh, well.

How about these songs which peaked in the 20's during the Casey Kasem era on AT40? These all would have made my Top 10:
#29 peak: "Ah Leah!" by Donnie Iris (1981); "No Reply At All" by Genesis (1981); "My Ever Changing Moods" by The Style Council (1984); "Send Me An Angel" by Real Life (1984); "Find A Way" by Amy Grant (1985)
#28 peak: "It's A Long Way There" by Little River Band (1976); "Hot Legs" by Rod Stewart (1978); "Foolin'" by Def Leppard (1983); "Show Me" by The Pretenders (1984); "Radioactive" by The Firm (1985)
#27 peak: "Just What I Needed" by The Cars (1978); "d**ned If I Do" by Alan Parsons Project (1979); "New Song" by Howard Jones (1984); "Tenderness" by General Public (1985); "Ship Of Fools (Save Me From Tomorrow)" by World Party (1987)
#26 peak: "Josie" by Steely Dan (1978); "Take Me To The River" by The Talking Heads (1979); "On The Loose" by Saga (1983); "So In Love" by Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark (1985); "Face The Face" by Pete Townsend (1986)
#25 peak: "Sausolito Summertime" by Diesel (1981); "Kids In America" by Kim Wilde (1982); "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by The Scorpions (1984); "Rockin' At Midnight" by The Honeydrippers (1985); "Wild Wild Life" by The Talking Heads (1986)
#24 peak: "I'm Losing You" by Rod Stewart & Faces (1971); "Power Of Gold" by Dan Fogelberg & Tim Weisberg (1978); "One Way Or Another" by Blondie (1979); "Early In The Morning" by The Gap Band (1982); "Under The Milky Way" by The Church (1988)
#23 peak: "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh (1973); "Fantasy" by Aldo Nova (1982); "Stranger In My House" by Ronnie Milsap (1983); "Naughty Naughty" by John Parr (1985); "Love Changes Everything" by Climie Fisher (1988)
#22 peak: "Long Time" by Boston (1976); "Shower The People" by James Taylor (1976); "Love Me Tomorrow" by Chicago (1982); "Ain't Nobody" by Rufus & Chaka Khan (1983); "Smoking Gun" by Robert Cray Band (1987)
#21 peak: "Is She Really Going Out With Him" by Joe Jackson (1979); "Heart Hotels" by Dan Fogelberg (1980); "Change Of Heart" by Tom Petty (1983); "Shame" by The Motels (1985); "Stages" by ZZ Top (1986)
A song gets extra bragging rights for cracking the Top 20 so I won't include any #20 peaks here.
By the way, there are a few songs which peaked in the 20's that are played ad nauseum on the radio today ("Born To Run", "Piano Man", "Levon", etc.). I didn't include those on my list as I wouldn't go gangbusters anymore if I heard them on the radio. The songs listed above, I would!

So many good choices here! Two that I especially agree with (and that haven't become big hits later) are "Ah!Leah!" and "The Salt In My Tears". Two excellent rock songs with a big sound - I still don't understand why they weren't bigger hits!
I also agree with the comment about R&B hits often being ignored in the early 80s. One favorite of mine is "Mama Used To Say" by Junior (#30) from 1982. Still sounds great! I also love all of the Gap Band hits -- pop audiences didn't appreciate them enough. Probably my favorite is "Burn Rubber" which only peaked at #84!

Let's see ...
"Tiny Dancer" - Elton John, 1972 (#41 pop/#35 AC) "More Than A Woman" - The Bee Gees, 1978 (didn't make the Top 100/#39 AC). And it gets played much more than Tavares' version, which actually charted.
I'm sure I can come up with more.
