Stations from each series that are pretty reliable, typically play all extras and have either not gone all-Xmas or at least haven't preempted the shows in the past:
80's - WQSR (though they've been hit or miss on the extras lately), WMLX 70's - KODJ, KOKZ

Well KMXG in the Quad Cities IA/IL just flipped to Christmas music today. I believe they played the 1971 special the first week last year so they probably will again this year during the '70s show (Sun 11AM-~2:20 CT).

I'm sorry, but I just don't get the point of playing Christmas music until at least the week before Thanksgiving. I started seeing Christmas decorations in stores at the end of September. They started with the Christmas commercials the week before Halloween. Now it's going to be nothing BUT Christmas the next two months. God help us.

I agree, and that's been my b!tch about this whole topic over the years. I have no interest in hearing Xmas music until Thanksgiving and even then, hearing 24/7 programming of Elton John "Step Into Christmas", Mariah Carey "All I Want for Christmas Is You", Madonna's "Santa Baby" (man I hate that song), and Wham's "Last Christmas" multiple times in a day could not interest me less. I'd rather hear real Christmas music from a Christian music station than the watered down Hollywood-ized stuff. This all of course, has to do with advertising and ratings, and what the station's advertisers tell them to play. There is also clearly a push from retail stores to drum up the "holiday mood" in people as they're out driving their kids around so that they will get the itch to go out and start Christmas shopping. It mainly goes back to one thing--if the majority of the station's listeners/consumers weren't interested in hearing Xmas music 24/7 and weren't influenced by it to go out and start shopping, our stations wouldn't make that kind of a flip for two months.

^Well said esp with 'annoy' in the sentence. How long until these silly ratings make the season start after Labor Day?!

If I were a station MD, I'd only limit the Christmas music to the 18-hour period, between 6PM Christmas Eve, and noon Christmas day. Plenty of time to go through the Christmas library.

I have no clue why it works for higher ratings to annoy entertain us with Christmas music while the Halloween candy is still in the stores on clearance, but it does. I'll try and explain this somehow. Yes! Most of us are all annoyed to no end. Thankfully, I have all the shows so I don't have to hunt them down during this time of year anymore and then when the season is over hope the station that was playing it before they switched to all holiday is still doing so. They didn't always! However, nearly every one who regularly or semi regularly posts here is a guy. Therefore, the opinions are going to be skewed on this. Most of the stations that switch to this format this early are AC and some HAC. Formats largely dominated by female listenership in the 30-60 year old range. I don't have exact age demos in front of me but logic dictates this if you have any recollection of the years of AC and HAC shows and station programming. How many women in this age range do you work with? I work with many. Nearly all of them like this crap and will listen to it for weeks on end enjoying every second. I don't know if it's the maternal watching kids and grandkids get excited for Christmas longer. I don't know if it's the idea of the whole family getting together which appeals more to women then men. I don't know. I'm not being sexist when I say all of this. That's essentially what I see and the reasons I think it is appealing to that demo.

That's essentially what I see and the reasons I think it is appealing to that demo. In Detroit where I live, WNIC/100.3 flips to Christmas music in early November every year. In October 2014, they had a 4.3 rating and were #13 in the 25 - 54 year old demo. In November 2014 playing all Christmas music, their rating more than doubled to 9.6, and they became the #1 station in the 25 - 54 demo... the demo that advertisers crave. If you had the opportunity to more than double your sales income simply by playing Christmas music, wouldn't you at least think about this option? Having said that... I listened to WNIC to a from work every day this week... just 20 minutes each way. I managed to hear David Foster's "Carol Of The Bells" four times, and songs from Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole and Jose Feliciano three times. I don't mind hearing Christmas music every now and then but when stations are so tight with their playlists... it can get old very quickly.

It's not just radio. Today Santa Claus took his position at the local shopping mall (less than a mile from my residence.). When I was a kid he waited until at least after Thanksgiving, but kids today apparently are making up their Christmas lists before they've eaten most of their Halloween candy.
