Also liked Faces, "Cindy Incidentally" and The Beach Boys, "Sail On Sailor" (first chart run) from this particular Hot 100. The Beach Boys songs from the 70's are so underrated. When I saw The Beach Boys last April on their 50th anniversary tour (which was a far better show than I thought it would be), they pleasantly surprised me by doing some rather obscure songs: One of which was "Sail On, Sailor", which I've always loved. The best part was that Brian Wilson sang lead on it (Blondie Chaplin sings lead on the record) and did a darn fine job on it!

Being a Steelers fan during the 1970's, I'm offering this lost classic from the 3/27/76 Billboard hot 100 chart, which peaked far below the top 40: "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" - Terry Bradshaw www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nrO8eVBux4

To coincide with this week's 70s program from Premiere, here's a "lost classic" from the March 27, 1976 Hot 100 that failed to reach the Top 40: I Thought It Took A Little Time (But Today I Fell In Love)Diana Ross www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIaEnmJxW5EIn the time it took for a deejay to give the complete title to this record, it was off the chart. Did Motown deliberately "fire" this song after the 45 was released?

Did Motown deliberately "fire" this song after the 45 was released? The explanation that I've heard regarding this record is that Motown fully intended this to be the follow-up to "Mahogany" until two things occurred: 1) The Fifth Dimension's cover of "Love Hangover"--a track form Diana Ross' LP-- was released. 2) A DJ somewhere started to play a radio-shortened version of the LP track, which got good response. These tow things led Berry Gordy/Motown to quit promoting "...Took a Little Time" and rush release "Love Hangover" as Ross' official single.

They were VERY similar, as this was of course the post-McCoo/Davis Dimension and the group, including Marilyn McC's replacement , were doing their best to sound like the Ross original. It would be the 5-D's last charted 45, peaking at #80.

Another lost oldie, which missed Billboard's top 40 but received significant local airplay in NYC, from 4/19/75: "Ease on Down the Road" - Consumer Rapport www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8OhyeuskZk

Also considered: *Legend In Your Own Time -- Carly Simon Great Carly Simon song. One that never gets played anymore. There are some other great songs in this survey that never made the top 40, beginning with one of the AT 40 extras David Bowie's "Changes". Dr. John's version of "Iko Iko" also debuted this week, while the Guess Who's "Heartbroken Bopper" had just peaked at #47 the previous week. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's "Nutrocker" was also on the charts.

So the single became an instant radio hit -- the last time I can recall a song reaching the Top 3 on WABC (with its notoriously tight playlist) and yet not reaching the national Top 40. A great pop single.

In 1981, Joe Dolce's novelty hit "Shaddup You Face" went as high as #2 but it didn't make AT40. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u-XZlmnyBoI know it should be in the '80s Lost Classic thread but it relates to WABC hits.

(In fact I'd never heard the Dolce song until I moved to the West Coast in the '90s and it was played as an oldie!) Amazing how much bigger WABC's playlist got in the last couple years of its existence.

it still amazes me that in the aftermath of his death, his label could not manage to get him a Top 40 single or 2, a la Columbia and Janis' "Bobby McGee".

In 1972 Rod Stewart's cover of a posthumously released Hendrix song "Angel" reached #40, but on AT40 they played the b-side "Lost Paraguayos" instead by mistake.
