My brother Tom is getting married (for the second time) on June 22nd. He's 62 years old and wants me to find the best dance tunes of all time.

Roll Over Beethoven - Electric Light Orchestra (Tom is obsessed with this)

Dance Me To The End Of Love - Leonard Cohen (Tom wants to slow dance with his bride, Vicki, to this one

Hokey Pokey - Ray Anthony (We had a record of this when we were kids)

I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston (Vicki's request - IMHO the most overplayed song in history.)

Ballroom Blitz - The Sweet (If the whole party doesn't dance to this...)

Sing Sing Sing - Benny Goodman Legacy Orchestra (Of all the 40s swing tunes: this is the best!)

Proud Mary - Ike and Tina turner (C'mon...this is manditory at any party!)

Come Dance With Me - Frank Sinatra (Tom Has A Sinatra Fetish...It's a good song.)

Macarena - Los Del Rio (A gimmy- best dance tune of the 90s)

Jump In The Line - Harry Belefonte (The Tune that Winona Ryder levatated to at the end of "Beetlejuice". A good lead-in to Limbo Rock or La Bamba.)

I've never understood why people want I Will Always Love You played at weddings, the song is about breaking up with someone. I used to DJ back around the time Whitneys version came out and many people requested it because it's "their song". That is the biggest problem I had with Whitney's take on the song, its so over sung that the meaning is completely lost. Personally I prefer Dolly Parton's 1982 remake of the song. Dolly's 1974 original is a little too bland, the 1982 Best Little sleeperhouse In Texas version has more emotion. By the way Dolly has the rare distinction of scoring a number one hit twice with a different version of the same song. She tried again in 1993 after Whitney scored a huge hit with it, only Dolly did it as a duet with Vince Gill but lightning didn't strike a third time for her.

A bunch of people who bash Gays and then dance to a gay anthem about hooking up at a YMCA.

I've always loved hearing the Isley Brothers' "Shout" at wedding receptions. I was disappointed when I didn't hear it at the last two receptions I went to.

(On the other side, I couldn't stand hearing that sappy "Butterfly Kisses" song during the father-daughter dances; that's when I chose to go outside for some air.)

I just have to add these tibits. There are some bars are offering a Red Solo Cups on Thursday for $10 and refills are just 1 cent. Plus, the staff will write with a sharpie on your cup.

Also, this Saturday a local establishment is having...well, this what they are saying on their facebook page:

Of course, some people have created a line dance to the song. It's rather simple to learn and easy to teach, mainly for the hat and boot crowd.

There are three different versions of "Shout" I will use. It really depends on how long I want the song to play.

The three are:
above mentioned Isley Brothers (short) , Dynatones (long) or Animal House version featuring Lloyd Williams (medium). If you want to keep the "Hey's" going, a good song out of it can be "Rock & Roll Part 2" by Gary Glitter. It all depends on your crowd, the bride & groom and which direction you want to go. This also determines how inactive will you get.

As for Shout. I still play it, but almost always the long version by The Isleys. (4:30) No self respecting DJ plays a bad cover (Dynatones). It'd be like playing a Drew's Party Hits CD!
