Not to go off topic, but all I can think of every time I hear "Dominique" is that scene in "Everybody Loves Raymond" when Debra's sister (who was planning to become a nun) catches Ray singing the song without his shirt on. Silly, just silly!!!! It was sad about what happened to the Singing Nun, though, and that was a great song.

The singing nun was trying to revitalize her one hit wonder career when she re-recorded an updated version of her song in 1982. It's on youtube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uJLAhZU95E . The disco version sounds catchier than the original. I wonder what made the original song from 1963 catch on and go all the way to #1? There was even a hollywood movie made about the singing nun with Debbie Reynolds. Not sure if Sally Fields's The Flying Nun TV series was a result of all these interest about nuns.

A story that was told in this week's 80s show about the Commodores initiation as freshmen in college was also told in 1977 during the chart run of "Brickhouse", in 78 with "Too Hot to Trot" and 79 with "Sail On". Good story. Always like it when certain people get the last laugh.

The story about Stevie Wonder playing piano on a coast-to-coast plane ride was told a few times, too.

Another favorite story was the Johnny Ray Cry story. I know of 4 or 5 shows it was told on. It was used for sure on 5/21/83, 3/7/87and I believe 1/26/85. It was tied into a song on the first 2 as the songs mentioned him. I think it was on a 70s show also but I dont remember the date. John I recall Shadoe talking about Johnnie Ray on another AT40 in early 1990 (maybe relating to "We Didn't Start the Fire"?) Casey might have done the same on CT40. Unfortunately, Johnnie died not long afterwards. I believe Casey retold that story in 1998 when "Are You Johnny Ray?" was in the Top 40. Getting back to The Singing Nun, both Shadoe and Casey mentioned her in late 1989 when "Pump Up The Jam" hit the Top 40. Both hosts mentioned that there were only 2 prior acts from Belgium to hit the countdown. First there was The Singing Nun (both shows played a drop of "Dominique"), then there were The Chakachas (only Shadoe played a drop of "Jungle Fever").

Whenever I hear "Dominique," I think of that episode of "The Simpsons" (from 1992 or 1993) when Milhouse's girlfriend is put in an all-girls' school after the girl's dad finds the two of them kissing. When Bart and Milhouse go to visit, she says the school is run by a group of French-Canadian nuns. The next scene shows a nun happily walking along, singing "Dominique," and playing the guitar, while a line of girls are following behind. The girl at the end of the line looks like she wants to die.

I wonder what made the original song from 1963 catch on and go all the way to #1? Undoubtedly the novelty factor. I'm guessing that's the same reason Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki" was #1 earlier the same year.

Ryan mentioned her and played a drop of "Dominique" (along with "Listen To Your Heart" by D.H.T.) when introducing "Somebody That I Used To Know" as the #1 song this week. Those are the only 3 Belgian born acts to hit #1.

The 1998 song refers to the singer of the song, "Are You Jimmy Ray", not Johnny.

When Casey played the #1 hits of the 1960's on "American Top 40" in the early 80's,he did play "Dominique"-That might've been in January or February of 1981.

BTW on the 1/25/2003 AT40. Pat O'Brien mentioned the Singing Nun in a story on Lasgo (which, like the Singing Nun, were from Belgium).

The Singing Nun was mentioned several times during Casey Kasem's initial stint as "AT40" host:"Dominique" was played as an "AT40 Special" on a September 1970 show,it was also played on both of the "Disappearing Acts" specials which aired in July 1973 & April 1975-Finally,there was an update on a July 1978 show in which Casey mentioned that The Singing Nun aka Jeanine Deckers was being hounded by the Belgian government for failure to pay taxes. Subsequently,The Singing Nun died of an apparent suicide in March 1985-I'm surprised that Casey never mentioned that on "AT40". This week Premiere plays 7/22/78, which includes the tax problem story. Incidentally, today (July 21) is the national holiday in the Singing Nun's native Belgium.
