That song was already planned for that position before she passed. Just a coincidence. The 4th hour OE on WWIS the other day was "Not Enough Love In The World" by Don Henley. Perhaps some stations got the new extra? WVLI aired the Don Henley song as the 4th hour extra as well.

FYI: WFMX also played "Not Enough Love In The World" by Don Henley as the 4th optional extra, May 28-2023, morning broadcast.

The first LDD in the 5/25/85 show was a bit of a curveball. Kristen (sp.?) in Albuquerque, NM, wrote a letter that mostly praised Cyndi Lauper for encouraging her to be her own person, and Kristen dedicated the Beatles' "Help" to Cyndi. One would think that "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" would be the requested song, as Kristen named it in the letter.
It also seemed a bit odd that Casey next gave the address for Long Distance Dedications after a commercial break interceded, but presumably that was done in the original show.

Really interesting, they edited out that entire portion of the closing. Wonder why they did that. The original that I have has Casey actually saying "June 4th". A similar thing happened with the 12/12/87 show -- when it first aired on AT40 the 80s in 2014, they somehow ended up editing in the date of July 25, 1987 in the closing. It would get corrected with the date of December 12, 1987 when it was re-aired a few years later. Sounds like that didn't exactly happen with the 6/4/88 ending?

Laura was very easy on the eyes as well, which made her a really good fit for the MTV era. "Self Control" is my favorite song of hers -- a bit edgier than her other material. I do think she suffered a little from not always having great songs (though who can figure out why "Power Of Love" was a modest hit for Laura but a huge smash for Celine), which was one thing Madonna made her living off of. Madge always seemed to have a keen sense of what the pop audience wanted to hear. Laura wasn't old, but she was pushing mid 30s at a time over 50% of MTVs audience was 12-24. Same thing happened to ONJ. After Laura Branigan's death, it was discovered that she had been shaving five years off her age for the entire time she was famous. When "Gloria" was on the charts, her age was given as 25, but she was actually 30; in 1987, she was claiming to be 30, but was really 35; at the time of her death, the public thought she was 47, but she was really 52.

Wow!-I'm listening to the countdown from 5/25/85 & "Private Dancer" by Tina Turner is the 4th hour optional extra-Kudos to Premiere for getting that song on so quickly. And possibly the longest tribute that Larry has ever done.

I take my original post back. Premiere did NOT have Private Dancer scheduled originally. The cue sheet I got at the beginning of May listed the Don Henley song. The audio on the Premiere FTP was updated on 5/24. I'm going to assume that these stations grabbed the audio before the change was made. I didn't see an email from Premiere listing the change of song so they probably didn't see that Tina was substituted.

I didn't get to hear that broadcast, as my local station was all-Christmas by then, and that was a couple of years before I acquired the shows. I wonder why Premiere felt they had to do that? The part of the closing with the date is still relevant today; the address to write in surely isn't. So according to the 2021 Premiere airing of 6/4/1988 that was recently posted, there's no mention of the date at all. And the original 12/12/1987 copy I have has Casey mentioning the correct date, as he usually does. (The only ones I can think of that he didn't were 10/1/1977, early 1979, 3/7/1981 and January 1982.) Just another reason I'm grateful to have the originals - no more further edits (especially unnecessary ones), and best yet, the original network commercials. (Not the annoying ads that get posted about these days. 😂)

And there was about 2 AT40 1984-1985 shows in the AT40: The 80's series that kept the Dr. Pepper sponsor tag intact.
