On the countdown from 5/10/80,Casey mentioned that Andy Gibb was scheduled to star in the sequel to "Grease" which had the working title "More Grease"-I just came across a Wikipedia article on Andy & it made no mention of him appearing in that particular movie-In 1982,"More Grease" was retitled "Grease 2" & starred Michelle Pfeiffer & Maxwell Caufield. If Andy was considered for the lead male role, I have a feeling his worsening drug spiral in the '80s put the end to it. Maxwell Caulfield probably wishes Andy had gotten the part! Whatever became of Maxwell Caulfield after Grease 2 was a movie flop in 1982? Michelle Pfeiffer had more better movie roles in the 1980's and 1990's!

The first of the resurrected 'Chipmunk' LPs, followed by "Urban Chipmunk" and "A Chipmunk Christmas" in '81, with the latter being a remake of his Dad's original 1962 "Christmas With the Chipmunks" LP; and "Chipmunk Rock" in '82. All four albums charted, and the first three were certified 'Gold'. "Chopmunk Punk" charted the highest, reaching #34. Ross senior's original 1959 "Let's All Sing With the Chipmunks" album had peaked at #4, and contained the #1 1958-'59 single "The Chipmunk Song".

I also remember in 1994 when Garth Brooks finally made R&R CHR used for Rick Dees/Casey's Top 40 with his cover of Kiss' "Hard Luck Woman" Despite it being Garth Brooks, that actually would not count as a crossover as, being a Kiss cover and all, it wasn't released to Country at all. Neither was Restless Heart's "Tell Me What You Dream", actually - one of a couple cases where two singles were issued to different formats at the same time: While Pop and AC got "Tell Me What You Dream", Country got "Mending Fences" - the two were actually released together as a double-sided single; "Fences" was on the Big Iron Horses album but "Dream" was not, though the album would be re-issued with "Dream" on it. Since "Fences" got zero Pop airplay, however, only "Dream" was ever listed on the Hot 100. (Policy was that both sides had to be getting Pop airplay.)

That song at #40 by Neil Sedaka and his 16 year old daughter, "Should have never let you go" still makes me shake my head. An odd song for a father and daughter to sing together. I listened to the lyrics to see if it could relate to that relationship, but can't see it. Personal aside, relating to Neil Sedaka and his family: I’ve twice met his nephew, CNN political commentator and analyst Harry Enten, whose mother Barbara is the sister of Leba Strassberg, whom Neil’s been married to since 1962. I met Harry (and got his autograph and pics with him) when I went twice to New York to participate in two political trivia competitions he co-hosted with MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki. Not to brag or anything, but my teams won first prize both times.

Whatever became of Maxwell Caulfield after Grease 2 was a movie flop in 1982? Michelle Pfeiffer had more better movie roles in the 1980's and 1990's! He's had a number of roles since that have kept him working without ever being a major star. I particularly remember him as Rex Manning in Empire Records in 1995, a film that was mediocre at best but I love the soundtrack. Of the other artists listed in films, Dolly Parton in "9 to 5" was mentioned even though the movie wasn't released until that December, and of course came with her massively successful title song. Elsewhere in the 5/10/80 countdown, the surge of soft ballads on the chart (just one year after disco peaked and abruptly declined) was really highlighted here when Casey included a story on the topic--not directly connected to any countdown song--where he quoted hitmaking disco producer Freddie Perren about adapting to the public's desire for a "slow dance". This slower and softer phase on the pop charts really continued for about the next two years, and could perhaps be seen in Casey's delivery as the energetic "Disco Casey" phase moved out in favour of a softer but straightforward sound.

Prediction for next show:
5/21/83
It's been more than 3 months since the last 1983 standalone and it's eligible (and fairly ripe) for another spin, it almost has to be this one.
