Got a chuckle when Casey described CDs as the "ultimate" in music technology. But of course, no one in '83 could have predicted digital music, streaming, etc.
On a sadder note, Pete King, the After the Fire drummer mentioned in Casey's story about performing double duty for ELO, died only four years later from cancer.

After Bill Wardlow left Billboard, what Billboard issue in 1983 retired the star system of black and white stars and replaced it with circles for the prime movers? Actually, the white stars were retired first, on the June 25, 1983 chart. Then, on October 1, they replaced the black stars with the circles (actually, ovals, to be technical, LOL). It's not you. Local football game on now on WPNC. Oh, what time will it be done? Whenever the game is done, I would assume. Just checked at top of the hour (start time for the '70s show). It's only halftime. (update) WPNC finished running the 4/2/83 show following the game, and are now continuing with the 3/30/74 show.

"Overkill" is an awesome song-Too bad it doesn't receive recurrent airplay. But let's play the hell out of the two Business As Usual singles! Obviously, some "music test" conducted 25 years ago said these are the only songs people want to hear and that was the end of that. In other news, I'm a bit disappointed with 1988 for next week. So far this year, up until now anyway, they've managed to avoid shows whose previous "A" airing was fewer than five years ago. And they had a perfect opportunity to continue the streak.

Casey really oversold the durability of CDs. A fingerprint or minor scratch and forget it.

North Carolina moved high school football from the fall of 2020 to the spring of 2021 due to the pandemic. High school football is normally played on Friday night but some states do have games on occasion on Saturdays. WPNC doesn't make the schedule,it just happened that the local team was scheduled to play today.

Interesting coincidental ads at the bottom of the cover page for Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel, who would collaborate on "Don't Give Up" three years later.

I would like to dedicate “Lovin You” to my aunt...yikes. Very sweet of the letter writer that he loved his aunt so much but I don’t think he’s actually listened to the lyrics. He could have picked a lot of songs and he picked that one?

Casey mentions that this week’s Top 12 is the same as last week’s. Every song in the same position (in the Top 12 that is). Had that ever happened before? No one could get Michael Jackson out of that Top spot. Culture Club, Duran Duran (at the height of their popularity), Lionel Richie..no one could bump MJ out of number one. Must have been frustrating as hell (yes I know they would all have number one hits but still). Of course Dexy’s Midnight Runners would end MJ’s rein at number one. I find the charts interesting I guess is what I’m saying, especially back then.

Listening to this 4/2/83 show, I'm wondering if Casey will even mention the 'static' top 11. So far, no. And he does, right before 'Billie Jean' at #1. If it weren't for a dispute between Greg Kihn and Bob Seger, we could have had a Thirsty 13 !!! Maybe this was the show that put Bill Wardlow "on notice" . There were 19 out of the 40 survey songs that made no movement from the previous week. Aside from the Bizarro chart action, 4-2-83 is a great show to celebrate National Countdown Day 4-3-21 APRIL 2, 1983, ACROSS THE CHARTS As many of you know, "Twilight Zone" never made the Radio & Records top 30 chart. Also, "Stray Cat Strut" and "We've Got Tonight" had fallen out by this point. # | Billboard | Cash Box | Radio & Records | Fantasy Top 20 | 1 | BILLIE JEAN [1] | BILLIE JEAN [1] | SEPARATE WAYS [3] | SEPARATE WAYS [4] | 2 | DO YOU REALLY WANT TO...
