Not so sure the '6' to '4' chart movement referenced above really works. They are really saying 25 or 26 to 4 or meaning to say that. That can be debated. What cannot be debated is that this is their signature song. Well at least if you define signature songs to be those songs that end a concert. Because that was the song Chicago played last night to end their show with REO Speedwagon in Raleigh.

If we expand from simple numbers to any word which suggests a particular number in some way, I have some more examples: "Penny Lane", The Beatles (#1, 1967) The penny coin is worth one penny in UK currency, or worth one cent in dollar-based currencies. "Love Is Like Oxygen", Sweet (#8, 1978) The chemical element oxygen has atomic number 8. "Queen Of Hearts", Juice Newton (#2, 1981) The queen is the second-highest rank in a deck of playing cards. "Double Vision", Foreigner (#2, 1978) I think we have only one artist. Suzi Quatro was Stumbling In at #4 with her only hit. Of course Quatro means 4 in Spanish.

Next week 80's show:
'80s: 8/31/1985 (repeat; last aired in 2008)
I assume these could be aired as well:
#1 Hits of the 1970's Part Three (February 1974 - July 1975) Y2K Special

When the 8/31/85 show aired in 2008, the optional extras were from Sting, Mick Jagger/David Bowie, UB40/Chrissie Hynde, and Depeche Mode who had just fallen out of the Top 40 with "People Are People". I'll predict...
* "So In Love" by Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (aka OMD) * "Be Near Me" by ABC * "Fortress Around Your Heart" by Sting * "Dancing In The Street" by Mick Jagger & David Bowie

Predicted extras:
• "Four in the Morning" – Night Ranger. NOT the same song as the Faron Young country classic from 1972. • "The Way You Do the Things You Do/My Girl" – Hall & Oates. • "Lovin' Every Minute of It" – Loverboy. • "Dancing in the Street" – Mick Jagger and David Bowie.

Great that AT40 played the album version of 'Elvira', on the 8-22-81 show.

Responding to commentary on songs whose titles predicted their own peak positions -- in addition to the missed songs quoted below, "You're The One That I Want" by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John (a #1 song in 1978) came out amidst other responses to my original post... On this week's '80's show (the re-airing of the August 22nd, 1981 AT40), Casey answers a question letter regarding songs which predict their own peak positions in their titles. The statisticians found that "eight songs in the Rock Era contained the number in the title that they eventually peaked at": [ . . . ] Either Casey's team missed some, or else they were applying undocumented criteria, because I was able to pull two or three more examples from the depths of the well of useless trivia stored somewhere in my brain! For starters... "1-2-3", Len Barry (#2, 1965) "25 or 6 to 4", Chicago (#4, 1970) A month later, on the 9/19/81 show, they made a correction and added "25 or 6 to 4" and "You're The One That I Want" to the list. No mention of the Len Barry song though. Oh, wow! That was the first full AT40 show I ever heard first-run; I enjoyed listening to the Premiere rebroadcast in September 2011 (but the detail of the correction for this particular piece of chart trivia clearly did not stick with me!)... Before moving on to the "fun and games" commentary, I'll cite another example I thought of this morning of a peak position predicted in the subtitle of a song -- I'd originally submitted "Fingertips - Part 1" by Little Stevie Wonder, but it's actually Part 2 which was the hit side, topping the charts in 1963! I only need to move laterally, though, from one Motown/Tamla legend to another, and cite... "Got To Give It Up, Pt. I", Marvin Gaye (#1, 1977) Of course, it's an occasionally-discussed bit of AT40 lore that Casey would have us believe that Pt. II was the hit side, the first five weeks that Marvin was in the countdown... Now, killing two birds with one stone... "Double Vision", Foreigner (#2, 1978) I think we have only one artist. Suzi Quatro was Stumbling In at #4 with her only hit. Of course Quatro means 4 in Spanish. Great calls for both Foreigner and Suzi!!! It's easy to forget that Foreigner was twice a bridesmaid before finally becoming the bride, what with how notorious that second trip to #2 ended up (more AT40 lore, or more generally Billboard chart lore)... Actually, the Spanish word for four is spelled "cuatro", but "quatro" is the word for four in Portuguese (and a couple of other small Romance languages), so Suzi does count as an artist who embodies the peak position of one of her songs... I can't think of any other examples, either; for instance, a quick check confirms that neither the Jackson Five nor the Dave Clark Five ever had a #5 peaker...
